Program

The University of Maryland Extension Mas-

ter Gardener Program is designed to train

participants as volunteer horticultural edu-

cators to support the University of Maryland

Extension mission by educating residents

about safe, effective and sustainable horti-

cultural practices that build healthy gardens,

landscapes, and communities.

Any Maryland resident, 18 years of age or

older, who likes working with people and

plants and has a thirst for knowledge. Can

become a Master Gardener.

By joining the program, you'll have the op-

● 9 — Container Gardening Workshop. No space

for a vegetable garden in the backyard? Anyone

can grow vegetables in containers whether you live

in an apartment, townhouse, single family home or

on a farm. This workshop will cover the basics of

● 11— I Can Grow What? Unusual Edibles and

Useful Plants for Home Gardeners. Go beyond

lettuce and tomatoes with this overview of 15 or so

useful plants for home gardeners. Besides being

interesting and fun, growing unusual plants can of-

ten have some advantages like lower pest presence.

This program will give an overview of plants not gen-

erally grown by home gardeners, where to get them,

and how to grow them. 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. North

● 19 — Plant Swap Presentation. Bring a few

plants you would like to trade. Go home with new

garden treasures. Master gardeners will be availa-

● 19 — Native Plants Presentation. Learn why we

should include native plants which are essential to

the success of our gardens and landscape. Learn

how to go about replacing non-native plants with

JUNE

● 23 — Pollinators: Happiness is a Butterfly Presen-

tation. Pollinators play a crucial role in flowering

plant reproduction of most fruits and vegetables. With-

out them, we wouldn’t have many of our favorite fruits,

vegetables, nuts, and berries which depend on them.

This presentation will cover what you can do to help

encourage and support pollinators in the environment.

● 25 — Drying Herbs Workshop. Learn how to dry

down fresh herbs so that you will have them on hand

● 14— Excited About Annuals Presentation. Spring

brings hundreds of choices for annuals to beautify your

garden, but sometimes it’s difficult to know what to choose,

how to transplant and how to care for your choices after its

transplanted. This presentation is designed to help choose

the right plants and care for them so you can enjoy them all

● 18— Bay-wise Workshop. Learn about the Bay-Wise

program and how to implement best practices in your gar-

den to protect the Chesapeake Bay. Learn about steps to
