FOREWORD Welcome to the 2003-2004 Trend Report on Student Credit Hours, Degrees Awarded and Enrollment. This report is produced annually by the Office of Institutional Research and Planning with the first Trend Report produced in the 1989-1990 academic year. Narrative in the report is used only to explain the derivation of the information presented and its sources. All information presented in this report is based on administrative site data. This means the campus with the ultimate academic, administrative and budgeting authority for a program receives credit for enrollment, student credit hours generated and degrees granted. Introductory statements precede each table, and footnotes are present to assist the reader.

The information in this report was retrieved from the ‘student statistics’ file produced by the Computing Services Network from data contained in the Student Information System. This report presents the students registered as of the sixth class day of the semester. The sixth class day is the University's official census date. Enrollment information presented in this report is unduplicated and the same as that provided in reports to the Board of Regents and to the National Center for Educational Statistics. The first major self-reported by a student is used in the unduplicated enrollment count. Second and third majors are not counted. Refer to the nulook data warehouse (https://mynulook.nebraska.edu/other/logon.asp) for the attribution of multiple majors to the appropriate colleges. We welcome your comments, questions and suggestions concerning this document. TABLE 1 UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA-LINCOLN

TOTAL STUDENT CREDIT HOURS BY COLLEGE AND LEVEL FALL SEMESTERS 1998, 2002 AND 2003 (WITH 1- AND 5-YEAR CHANGES)

This table presents the total number of Student Credit Hours (SCH) registered for by students as of the sixth class day of the semester. The sixth class day is the University's official census date. The measure of academic courses is generally thought of in terms of credit hours (CH); for instance, a degree program may require the student to successfully complete 135 CH. A lecture course that is assigned one CH will generally meet for one hour each week for the duration of a semester. If 50 students register for a three CH course, that class will produce 150 (3 CH times 50 students) SCH's. The level of a course and hence the level of the SCH's attributable to that course is determined by the first digit of the course number:

First Digit Level of Course1 or 2 lower level, undergraduate 3 or 4 upper level, undergraduate

5, 6, 7, or 8 graduate I and professional 9 graduate II

In Tables 1 and 2, all graduate and professional SCH's are combined. Dual level (i.e. 400/800) courses are assigned to either the undergraduate, upper level or to the graduate I level depending upon the course number for which the student registers. Graduate II courses are those in the 900 series and are open exclusively to graduate students except by permission of the Dean of Graduate Studies. The general prerequisite for courses in the 900 series is at least 18 hours in the same department which may include approved courses in allied departments. The totals on Table 1 include "C" courses; these courses are attributed to the colleges which provide the faculty instructors. Those "F" courses or field courses registered for on or before the official census date are included. The information in this table was retrieved from the 'student statistics' file produced by the Computing Services Network from data contained in the Student Information System.

TABLE 3

UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA-LINCOLN

DEGREES CONFERRED BY COLLEGE, MAJOR AND LEVEL FISCAL YEAR 1998-99 THROUGH 2002-2003 Table 3 shows the degrees conferred (i.e. program completions) for the August, December and May graduations (fiscal year July 1-June 30) for a five-year period. Program completion data are retrieved from the UNL Student Data Base, Office of Student Records. Degrees are organized in the following format: • Students with a single major are identified on the first line by major and college • Students with dual majors are organized by their primary major, secondary

major, and college. Those completing more than two majors are not shown here due to space restrictions.

• If students received dual degrees (ex. BS in Business and BA in Arts & Sciences)

then two student degrees will be listed under their respective major and college. • Most graduate majors are shown in their sub-college (for example Agricultural

Sciences and Natural Resources rather than Graduate Studies).

TABLE 4

UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA-LINCOLN

ENROLLMENT BY COLLEGE AND FULL-TIME/PART-TIME STATUS; FALL SEMESTERS, 1998, 2002 AND 2003

Fall semester student enrollment totals are disaggregated into full-time and part-time components. Undergraduate and Law students enrolled for less than 12 credit hours are considered part-time students; when enrolled for 12 or more credit hours they are full-time students. Graduate students and MArch professional students enrolled for less than 9 credit hours are part-time and when enrolled for 9 or more credit hours are considered full-time students. This table presents full-time and part-time enrollment figures for each college. Graduate student enrollments are grouped under the Graduate College, not under the colleges which provide graduate instruction. Enrollment figures reflect the sixth class day enrollment census. This information is retrieved from data contained in the Student Information System. Enrollment information on this table is unduplicated and the same as that provided in reports to the Board of Regents and to the National Center for Educational Statistics.

TABLES 6 AND 6A UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA-LINCOLN

MINORITY AND NON-RESIDENT ALIEN STUDENT ENROLLMENT

BY COLLEGE AND FULL-TIME/PART-TIME STATUS FALL SEMESTERS 1998, 2002 AND 2003

The format of Tables 6 and 6A is essentially identical to Table 4, except that the counts are restricted to minority (Table 6) and non-resident alien students (Table 6A). Minority students are United States citizens who are classified as either Black Non-Hispanic; American Indian or Alaskan Native; Asian or Pacific Islander; or Hispanic. Beginning in Fall 1994 a "Non-resident Alien" was redefined in this Trends Report as a student who is in this country under conditions of a visa. Excluded from the non-resident alien category are permanent immigrants and refugees who are not required to leave the United States at a future date. (In 1993 and before, "non-resident aliens" included permanent immigrants and refugees that were not required to leave the United States at a future date.) Therefore, the category of “non-resident aliens” includes students who are not U.S. citizens. These enrollment figures reflect the sixth class day enrollment census. This information is retrieved from data contained in the Student Information System. Included are students enrolled in UNL-administered courses of instruction which are offered for delivery at a location other than the UNL campus, such as Engineering and Human Resources and Family Sciences. Students enrolled in UNO-administered courses delivered on the UNL campus, such as Dentistry and Nursing, are not included. The Office of International Affairs uses different criteria to establish its database. Therefore, its data will not match the data presented in this table.

Note: Non-resident alien enrollment was determined differently in 1994 than in previous years. Beginning in 1994 students who were permanent immigrants and refugees and not required to leave the United States at a future date were not counted as non-resident aliens. A "non-resident alien" is a student who is in this country under conditions of a visa. Some students who were previouslycounted as non-resident aliens were counted as minority students in 1994.IRP, 12/3/2003D:\MY DOCUMENTS\TREND\MINORITY.XLS, CSHS;\TREND\ALLEXCELTABLES.XLS, CSH

TABLES 8A THROUGH 8N UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA-LINCOLN

ACADEMIC MAJORS BY COLLEGE AND ATTENDANCE MODE; FALL SEMESTERS 2002 AND 2003

This table compares student enrollment for fall semesters 2002 and 2003 by college, major and by full- and part-time status. Full-time students are those undergraduates and Law students who are carrying at least a 12 student credit hour load and those graduate and MArch professional students carrying at least a 9 student credit hour load. The majors are self-reported by the students and correspond to majors listed in the UNL Graduate and Undergraduate Bulletins. Tables 8A-8N reflect data contained in the Student Information System data base. No attempt has been made to correct data which may seem to be in error since the totals for each college must reflect census date enrollment totals previously reported to the public. Also please note that some majors such as agribusiness may be found in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and Business Administration. Clarifying comments are enclosed in brackets following appropriate majors. Enrollment information on this table is unduplicated and the same as that provided in reports to the Board of Regents and to the National Center for Educational Statistics. The majors counted in this table are self-reported by the students. If a student enters two or three majors, the second and third majors are not counted because an unduplicated count is required for external reporting.
