USF is looking to snap a four game skid - all road losses - as they start seeing the end of their season-long seven game road swing on the horizon; after this weekend’s games in Arizona, the Dons play at Cal (Sept. 16) before returning home to host UC Davis (Sept. 18). With a team best four goals already, senior midfielder Amanda Whittle has established a new career high; Whittle scored in USF’s first three games and added a score at Vanderbilt this past weekend; coming into the year, Whittle’s season high was three (2015). The Dons’ last win over a Pac-12 opponent came at Oregon last year (1-0); prior to that, USF had not defeated a Pac-12 opponent since Oregon State in 2004. USF has made a habit of scoring late with 5 of their 7 goals coming in the 2nd half this year GAME NOTES LAST TIME OUT: DONS SUFFER LOSSES AT MISSOURI, VANDERBILT The Dons dropped both games of a road swing against SEC opponents this past weekend, falling to Missouri by a 4-1 tally before being edged in their Sunday contest at Vanderbilt 2-1. The Dons fell in a 2-0 hole at Mizzou before Maddy Glaser connected for her first score of the season in the 47th minute. However, that would be as close as USF would get as the Tigers added two more goals in the 51st and 78th minutes. Amanda Whittle netted USF’s lone goal at Vandy with a strike in the 15th minute, but the Commodores answered with two quick goals in the 17th and 20th minutes to claim the victory. SNAPSHOT: ARIZONA STATE (3-1-1) The Sun Devils split a pair of home contests this past weekend with a 3-0 win over Columbia followed by a 3-1 loss to Denver. Jazmarie Mader leads the Devils with 4 goals in 5 games and a team high 18 shots. Adriana Orozco has contributed two goals and a pair of assists as well. Overall, ASU is outscoring opponents 11-5 so far while holding a 97-47 advantage in shots. SNAPSHOT: ARIZONA (3-1-1) The Wildcats posted shutouts in both of their games this past weekend, blanking Denver 3-0 and Columbia 2-0. Lex Selman Richards has paced UA offensively with 3 goals and a pair of assists to her credit, while Cali Crisler has also tallied 3 goals on the year. The Wildcats are outshooting opponents 95-40 over their five games while holding a 13-6 edge in goals. ON THE VERGE For the first time in program history, the Dons received votes in a national top-25 poll earlier this season. Top Drawer Soccer included USF among its teams receiving votes after the Dons started the year by winning their first two games - one against Florida Gulf Coast, who went into that contest ranked No. 24 by TDS. LEADING RETURNERS ABOUND The Dons return six of their top seven points leaders from last year, however 2015 top scorer redshirt sophomore Samantha Jehnings (7 goals / 2 assists) will miss the season due to injury. Leaving other top returning scorers in senior Amanda Whittle, who led the team in assists (5) while scoring 3 goals, junior Sonja Giraud, who was 2nd on the team with 5 goals on the year, while junior Camille Wilson tallied 4 goals. Senior Jessica Nakae was 2nd on the team with 3 assists and scored a pair of goals, while sophomore Micaela Mercado registered 2 goals last season. LEAN ON ME After losing six seniors from last year, all of whom played a significant role, the Dons are sure to lean heavily on their returning senior core of Jessica Nakae, Amanda Whittle and Ali Schaffer. With a combined 179 appearances coming into the year, the trio represents by far the most experience on this year’s squad. Nakae, who can offer both an attacking and defensive midfield presence, was a first team All-WCC selection and second team all-region honoree in 2015. The left-footed Whittle presents a wicked offensive midfield attack on the wing and was an All-WCC honorable mention pick last year while leading the team with five assists. Schaffer, the 2015 WCC co-Defensive Player of the Year and third team all-region honoree, has logged the most career minutes (5,226) of anyone on the team heading into the 2016 campaign. THIS YEAR’S CROP The Dons’ roster features nine newcomers - all freshmen. All of the incoming freshmen hail from California except Mckenzie Humpherys (Layton, Utah) and Olivia Camera (Potomac Falls, Va.). HEAD COACH JIM MILLINDER

5th Season Cal State Dominguez Hills ‘93 Record at USF (entering 2016): 33-32-14 (.494), 4 seasons

NCAA Division I Record: 177-129-39 (.570), 17 seasons Overall Head Coaching Record: 286-146-72 (.639), 21 seasons 2015 NSCAA West Region Coach of the Year 1998 Pac-10 Coach of the Year 1997 NSCAA West Region Coach of the Year 1996 Pac-10 Coach of the Year

Millinder came to the Hilltop with a wealth of experience and success after stops at the University of Southern California (1996-2006), Loyola Marymount (1994-1995) and El Camino College (1978-1993), where he compiled a collective head coaching record of 253-114-48. Prior to his appointment at USF, Millinder spent four seasons as head coach with the South Bay Force club team. In his 11 seasons at USC, Millinder led the Women of Troy to a record of 136-70-21 (.645) and eight NCAA Tournament appearances. He also guided the team to a school-record 16 wins in 1997 and is USC’s all-time leader in wins. USC went 14-7-1 en route to earning a share of the 1998 Pac-10 title and making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Millinder earned Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors in 1996 and 1998. One season after his departure in 2006, USC won the NCAA championship with a core of players he recruited, including 2008 Honda Award Finalist Kristin Olsen and 2005 Gatorade National Prep Player of the Year Amy Rodriguez - a 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist and U.S. women’s national team member.

During his 11-year tenure at USC, Millinder helped to produce six All-Americans, nine NSCAA All-West Region selections and numerous All-Pac-10 honorees. This impressive list included three freshman of the year winners, 38 All-Pac-10 selections (14 first-team) and 52 Pac-10 All-Academic recipients. Prior to taking over USC, Millinder spent two seasons at LMU where he led the Lions to three wins over Top 20 teams (including No. 8 Santa Clara in 1994). Success soon followed wherever Millinder went. In his four seasons (1990-93) as the women’s head coach at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif., his team claimed a state junior college championship, was runner-up to another, and reached the semifinals in his other two seasons. He finished with a 66-8-16 record coaching the women. Millinder also took over as the men’s soccer coach at El Camino (1992-93) and in those two seasons the team claimed the 1992 state championship and made the playoffs in his final season. He went 43-9-17 as the men’s head coach. From 1978 to 1989, Millinder spent 12 seasons as an assistant coach for El Camino’s men’s and women’s programs and they combined to win six state titles in that time. He also served as the interim head coach of the men’s team when they claimed the 1987 state championship. Millinder also served as the head coach of the 1992 U.S. Amateur Championship Ajax women’s club team and 1993 U.S. Amateur titlist Cal-South men’s state senior team. Among his other coaching positions were with the Cal-South under-16 girls Olympic Development team and the Amateur Athletic Foundation. Millinder was also an ambassador to the U.S. soccer team at the 1994 World Cup. Millinder played professionally for eight years and competed against soccer legends such as Pele, Franz Beckenbauer and Johann Cruyff. He played midfielder in the North American Soccer League for the New York Cosmos (1978), Los Angeles Aztecs (1979), Tulsa Roughnecks (1980), and Fort Lauderdale Strikers (1981-82). From 1983 to 1985, Millinder played for the Oklahoma City Slickers in the American Soccer League, where he was a two-time All-Star, and for the Los Angeles Lazers in the Major Indoor Soccer League.

What’s a Don?“Don” is an acronym for De Origen Noble, which translates to “of noble origin” and is a Spanish title given only to a noble person of political, social or official distinction. The name references the early history of California and San Francisco, which was marked by the exploits of the adventuresome and swashbuckling Spanish Dons. All USF students and alumni are of noble origin who share in the long passion for learning in order to better understand the past, clarify the present and anticipate the future. Thus, we are proud to call ourselves the Dons. USF’s mascot is named Don Francisco, in honor of Don Francisco de Haro, the first mayor of San Francisco.

ONWARD AND UPWARDThe Dons come into the year with high expectations after a 2015 season that went down as the best in program history. Despite falling to Portland in the regular season finale, USF tied for second in the WCC - their best finish ever - while going 13-4-3 overall and 7-2-0 in conference play, both program bests. Among the team highlights were the Dons’ first-ever victory over WCC-rival Santa Clara and an upset over No. 5 BYU that went down as the highest ranked team USF had ever defeated.

GETTING DEFENSIVEA big factor in the Dons’ 2015 success was a lockdown defense that set a new team record with a 0.72 goals against average over the course of the year while tying the program mark with 10 shutouts. The loss of four-year starter and all-region goalkeeper Madalyn Schiffel certainly leaves a big hole in the defensive backfield, but the Dons return reigning WCC co-Defensive Player of the Year Ali Schaffer and four players that appeared in at least half of the games last year on defense or as a defensive midfielder: Jessica Nakae, Micaela Mercado, Autumn Smithers and Allison Arriola.

DONS PICKED 5TH IN PRESEASON POLL USF was voted to finish 5th in the 2016 WCC preseason poll, voted on by the coaches. Defending champion BYU was picked to win the WCC, taking home eight first place votes. Santa Clara earned two first place votes and was picked to finish second. Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount took the 3rd and 4th spots, respectively, while San Diego and Portland tied for 6th. Saint Mary’s, Gonzaga and Pacific rounded out the bottom three sports.
