This brochure describes how the University’s training and development providers will work with you and your faculty or professional service to realise this commitment.

We offer many training and development opportunities and resources to support the individual development of staff and postgraduate researchers. These contributes significantly to both personal success and the achievement of the University’s strategic aims. Within these pages you will find an A-Z of workshops, courses and online resources that the Professional Development Unit (PDU) and other University training providers offer. PDU courses can be booked online through Staffbook www.staffbook.soton.ac.uk

We are intending to become more than a central training provider. We wish to work with you, your mentor and your faculty or professional service to help you realise all your development needs, and it may be that these are best understood locally. We want to support you to be at the centre of your own development, identifying your own needs and selecting appropriate developmental resources. For this reason we are happy to develop faculty or unit based events, or indeed to work with associates in your unit to facilitate such events. Supporting this, we will be implementing a coaching and mentoring framework over the next academic year.

We hope that you will engage in some fruitful development, which improves your life and career, and we look forward to working with you.

Professor Hugh Davis Director of Education Director of the Professional Development Unit

The University Strategy 2010-2015 expresses a clear commitment to ‘Developing our People’, enabling each individual to reach their full potential and achieve both individual and collective excellence.

The Professional Development Unit (PDU), working in partnership with Associates across Faculties and Professional Services, serves all University staff and postgraduate researchers. Our offices and training rooms are located in Building 27 on Highfield Campus ; see ‘How to find us’ on page 60.

We can support you in the development of your knowledge, skills and behaviours to reach your full potential in your current role and career aspirations.

Training and development workshops

We run many face-to-face workshops, courses and seminars to support your development. The A-Z listing in this brochure details the training and development workshops and courses being run in the 2013/14 academic year. See page 8 for a list of topics.

Online resources

In addition to the face-to-face workshops and courses, our website (www.southampton.ac.uk/pdu ) contains a wealth of online resources, including links to useful external resources, pocketbooks, recommended literature and streamed videos. As a member of the university you have access to ‘Your development toolkit’, (https://member.goodpractice.net/uofs/Login.gp) which contains many videos, audio extracts and other useful resources relating to your personal effectiveness, management and leadership skills; and the Scott Bradbury videos (www.southampton.ac.uk/pdu/resources_links/online_resources.html) which support your understanding of issues such as performance, feedback, coaching and implementing change.

The Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers and the Researcher Development Framework (RDF)

The University is a signatory to the Concordat to support the career development of researchers through Universities UK. The Concordat is an important national document that details the expectations and responsibilities of researchers, their managers, employers and funders. It contains seven key principles and aligns with the principles of the European Charter

for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for Recruitment of Researchers. The University is implementing the seven principles throughout the institution as detailed in the University’s Concordat implementation plan. See the Human Resources website (www.southampton.ac.uk/hr/services/concordat) for more information and to download the implementation plan.

The development opportunities relevant to researchers have been mapped to the Researcher Development Framework (RDF), which describes the knowledge, behaviours and attitudes of researchers and encourages them to aspire to excellence through achieving higher levels of development. For more information about the RDF and the alignment of our workshops with the RDF, please visit our website (www.southampton.ac.uk/pdu).

Nationally accredited courses and Professional Recognition of Educator Practice (PREP) Framework

We have developed the Professional Recognition of Educator Practice (PREP) Framework and run the Postgraduate Certificate of Academic Practice (PCAP), which are nationally accredited by the Higher Education Academy (HEA). The PREP Framework supports the development of staff educator skills through providing routes for accreditation against the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF). It has been accredited to provide recognition against the four descriptors of the UKPSF (Associate Fellow, Fellow, Senior Fellow, Principal Fellow). The UKPSF is a key external reference point for guiding staff in developing and evidencing their continued professional development within Higher Education (www.southampton.ac.uk/pdu/Academic%20Practice/Teaching%20&%20Learning/Framework/prepframework.html).

Leadership and Management Development

The realisation of the University’s strategic aims depends on the extent to which our leaders at all levels are supported and facilitated to provide the excellent leadership needed to deliver the required outcomes. The skills, knowledge and behaviours vital to the successful leader are supported via programmes, workshops and resources detailed in this brochure.

Bespoke events

As a manager, if you identify a development need for your team, which is not supported by an intervention or resource detailed in this brochure, please contact [email protected] to discuss the possibility of a bespoke event. Please note there may sometimes be a cost associated with bespoke activities.

The Researcher Development and Graduate Centre (RDGC)

The RDGC (www.southampton.ac.uk/rdgc) is a constituent part of the PDU and offers training and support to postgraduate researchers across the University.

Centre for Innovation in Technologies and Education (CITE)

We work closely with CITE (www.southampton.ac.uk/CITE), which provides the university with strategic leadership and support for the use of technology enhanced learning (TEL). CITE aims to connect and foster cross-institutional initiatives and best practice, enabling faculties to engage with a central resource for new ideas as well as institutional, national and international drivers.

Working in partnership with the PDU are Associates from across the Faculties and Professional Services who are committed to continuous development. They excel at teaching, research, enterprise, education development and/or public engagement and are inspirational leaders or managers, technical experts or highly skilled specialists.

Associates can be from any staff group and may support the development of staff across all staff groups as appropriate. Having established high levels of credibility at local or university level, their views and guidance are currently highly valued by the staff they come in contact with. In addition, some Associates may have been publically recognised for their achievement (eg VC teaching awards).

With the agreement of the Dean of Faculty (or designated representative) or Director of Service, Associates work in partnership with us to support the development of colleagues within their Academic Unit, Faculty or Service or across the University as a whole.

The variety of ways in which Associates support the development of colleagues include:

− Coaching

− Mentoring

− Delivery or co-delivery of development workshops

− Design or co-design of online resources, course materials or case studies

− Leading seminars

− Faculty/Service based induction and/or PPDR champion

− Leading Action Learning Sets

− Observation and feedback to course participants

− Enabling attendance of staff at occasional timetabled lectures

− Supervising an apprentice or intern

− Providing work shadowing opportunities

− Marking of assignments

− Acting as an open door expert or system super user

− Inputting into learning and development policy

− Contributing to a skills cloud.

If you are interested in applying to support the development of staff in any of the ways outlined above please speak to your line manager/ Principal Investigator in the first instance. For more information, please visit our website or contact Bridget Wilkinson, Associates and Collaborations Manager at [email protected]

Creating and updating your professional development plan can take place at any time; at a minimum, it will be discussed as part of your induction, probation and at your annual Personal Performance and Development Review (PPDR) meeting. As part of these discussions, and at any other time, this brochure can be used to help you plan your future development in the following way:

1. Identify and agree your training needs with your line manager or Principal Investigator (PI).

2. Consider for each identified training need the most appropriate approach to meeting that need, eg workshop, background reading, shadowing a senior colleague, on-the-job skills practice, deskside coaching, working with a mentor, etc. Where attendance on a workshop or reference to available information is the chosen method, please look at the ‘Topics’ on page 8 or the A-Z listing in this brochure to view the relevant development opportunities and resources available.

3. If considering attending a workshop, please ensure that you read the course description and learning outcomes carefully by following the appropriate links to ensure they match your requirements.

4. Seek approval from your line manager/Principal Investigator (PI) to attend.

5. Book your place via Staffbook (www.staffbook.soton.ac.uk) or other relevant booking process.

6. Complete any pre- and post-course evaluation questionnaires to assess the impact of the development activity on your success in your role.

7. Discuss and record this impact at your next PPDR discussion.

8. Check out the PDU website on a regular basis (www.southampton.ac.uk/pdu) for any new events or resources.

Face-to-face

A psychological approach to leadership and management

This course aims to enable managers to become more effective in interpersonal aspects of their role. Participants are taught to reflect on cognitive, emotional and behavioural factors of themselves and others which affect the way that interpersonal interactions play out. Simple models describing these interactions are taught and applied to typical organisational situations which may cause difficulties, eg dealing with conflict, defensiveness, underperformance, absenteeism and bullying. The course makes use of lecture-style materials and interactive exercises, reflecting on individual experience.

Acting as a reviewer

You have published a few papers, and now journal editors have started asking you to help them out by reviewing other people’s submissions. You will be aware that peer review is a critical part of academic life, but also fraught with difficulties. This course evaluates the reviewer’s role and sees how the power given to reviewers varies between publications. It surveys academically cited check-lists that aim to increase a reviewer’s efficiency and confidence, and presents a structured approach to addressing the needs of the journal editor and the authors.

Belbin team profiling

Belbin team profiling is used by thousands of organisations across the world to help teams achieve their full potential. This tool is used to ensure that within a team we use our strengths to our advantage and that we manage our weaknesses as best we can. The information gained via profiling can be used to improve productive working relationships; identify areas of weakness thus informing development plans or future recruitment; enhance the performance of the team; raise self-awareness; and build mutual trust and understanding. Delivered by a Belbin accredited facilitator, profiling is offered on a bespoke basis, subject to available resources. For further information, please contact [email protected]. Please note that there may be a cost associated with this activity.

Developing an inclusive curriculum

This interactive session argues the need for equity considerations to be mainstreamed across the functions of institutions. It explores the nature of an inclusive curriculum and the ways in which different universities are addressing the issue using evidence from a number of studies of the learning experiences of disabled students, to argue that we should make reasonable adjustments available for all students. Discussion will also take place on effective ways to help domestic students interact with international students. It is suggested that, if we want to achieve equality of opportunity for all students, instead of classifying people by their age, disability, gender, race, religion and sexual orientation, we would do better to focus instead on their individual learning needs and entitlements.

Developing assessment

In Higher Education we are increasingly being asked to assess our students and their work for different purposes: for the development of core skills, knowledge and understanding; to give feedback in formative assessment; and to mark and grade in summative assessment. Traditional forms of assessment, such as the unseen written exam, cannot do all of this for lecturers or students and therefore there is a need to consider a wider range of assessment methods. This session will evaluate approaches that have been used in different institutions across a number of subject areas, with specific reference to the appropriateness of the methods in assessing the stated learning outcomes. Participants will also have an opportunity to share and analyse their own experiences.

e-learning symposium

The Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies (LLAS) runs an annual e-learning symposium. The aim of the 2014 symposium on 23 and 24 January 2014 is to seek to bridge the gap between the ‘techie’ and the teacher, giving educators ideas to help them integrate e-learning into their practice but also to inspire them to see where the online future could lead. The symposium is always well-attended by practitioners from a wide range of disciplines and institutions, and keynote speakers are live-streamed. Following last year’s successful event, the two-day symposium comprises a practical mix of workshops on authoring tools and e-learning techniques and presentations to inspire the mind with exciting ideas about the possibilities that online learning offers. We offer attendees a range of content from areas of more specific interest to our core LLAS community, to topics of wider interest to educators involved in e-learning. We highlight best practice in using e-learning and feature an exciting mixture of research and reports from practice to inspire our community.

Engaging students in research and inquiry

The argument of this workshop can be simply stated: all undergraduate students in all higher education institutions should experience learning through and about research. One of the most effective ways to develop students as researchers is to engage them in research and inquiry; in other words, to see them as producers not just consumers of knowledge. Many undergraduate research programmes are for selected students and may well be outside the formal curriculum, eg in summer enrichment programmes. However, here it is suggested that the key to mainstreaming undergraduate research and inquiry is to integrate it into the curriculum. The workshop will explore the variety of ways in which undergraduate research and inquiry based learning are undertaken using numerous mini-case studies from different disciplines, departments and institutions in Australasia, Europe and North America.

This half day course will equip you with some tools to help you to tackle and respond to the diversity of views in the classroom which can impact on discussions. In seminars and tutorials students are required to communicate with each other and with their tutor. In many cases the specific development of communication skills (presentation, debate, discussion, criticality, problem solving in teams, etc) are explicitly noted as course learning outcomes. Linking discipline-based research and teaching to benefit student learning

In this workshop participants will explore the complexity and contested nature of the research-teaching nexus. It is argued that the relationship between research and teaching depends on how the terms ‘research’ and ‘teaching and learning’ are conceptualised. It is suggested that undergraduate students are likely to gain most benefit from research in terms of depth of learning and understanding when they are involved actively, particularly through various forms of research and inquiry-based learning. These themes will be discussed in this workshop and there will be opportunities for identifying practices which are transferable to your own context.
