Head coach Michael Burcin (BUR-sin) was named the men’s golf coach at Wisconsin on May 31, 2011, and has

guided the Badgers to steady improvement through his seve seasons as head coach. Under Burcin’s instruction, UW has record-ed three of the six-best single-season scoring averages in school history. Last year, UW’s stroke average of 294.1 was third-best in school history. The prior season, the Badgers’ average of 295.35 was fifth-best in school annals. And in 2014-15, despite having just one senior on the roster, Wisconsin recorded the second-best average in school history at 293.25. Playing in one of the toughest conferences in the country, the Badgers have also improved their placement at the Big Ten Championships. After six straight years of finishing 10th or worse at the conference meet, UW has placed at least seventh in two out of the last four years. That includes a share of fifth place in 2015, the team’s best finish since 2007. Last year Burcin guided the Badgers through an undefeated run at the Big Ten Match Play that saw UW defeat No. 12 Illinois, No. 29 Penn State and No. 44 Northwestern. Individually, three of the top 11 career scoring averages in school history are held by members of the current team. Jordan Hahn enters his senior season in third place on that list, less than a half stroke behind Dan Woltman’s school record. Juniors Pete Kuhl and Nick Robinson rank eighth and 11th, respec-tively. One player who will surely find his way on that list is Griffin Barela, who exploded on the scene last year as a freshman, earning Big Ten Golfer of the Week honors following his first collegiate tournament. Barela tied for eighth at the season-opening Badger Invitational and later

in the season became the first UW golfer to earn medalist honors since 2006 when he tied for first at teh D.A. Weibring Invitational. His 74.06 scoring average was third-best in school history for a freshman. The progress exemplifies Burcin’s goals when he was named the head coach. “Wisconsin is certainly a sleeping giant and I am looking forward to connecting with the golf community in the city and around the state. My No. 1 prior-ity is to recruit the state hard and keep the best players within the borders. If you are able to do that, it usually leads to big things. “My goal is to develop a program that com-petes at a high level in the Big Ten Conference. If you are able to do that, because of the quality of the conference, you set yourself up to be a player on the national scene.” Before taking over at Wisconsin, Burcin spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at South Carolina. In 2010 he was named the Golf Coaches Association of America’s Jan Strickland Assistant Coach of the Year. He was selected to serve as an assistant at the 2011 Palmer Cup, which took place at the Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Conn. The Palmer Cup is a Ryder Cup-style competition for teams of collegiate golfers from the United States and Europe which squared off in a three-day match play event. In Burcin’s time at South Carolina, the Gamecocks made six-straight NCAA regional appearances (2005-10), including winning the school’s first NCAA regional title in 2007. They advanced to the NCAA championship three times in Burcin’s seven seasons, with their top finish being a share of 11th place in 2007. In 2008-09, Burcin helped South Carolina win a school-record four tournament titles.

In addition, four Gamecocks earned All-America honors and seven earned All-SEC hon-ors during his tenure. With the 2016 addition of three more student-athletes at South Carolina gaining access to PGA Tour Canada last week-end, Burcin has recruited or coached 12 players that have status on the European PGA Tour, PGA Tour, Web.Com Tour, PGA Tour Latin America, and PGA Tour Canada. Among those is Wesley Bryan, winner of the PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage in 2017. In addition to assisting coaches with day-to-day coaching duties, Burcin’s primary role at South Carolina was to implement and coordi-nate a recruiting program conducive to winning championships. Burcin was also the men’s golf liaison for the academic staff, and the team achieved at least a 3.3 grade point average in each semester and combined for a team-record 3.54 GPA in the fall of 2006. Before going to South Carolina, Burcin spent seven years as a golf professional in Lancaster, Pa. His last stop in Pennsylvania involved developing an indoor teaching pro-gram at a retail golf store in Lancaster. While in Lancaster, Burcin kept an active playing sched-ule of section and chapter PGA events. Originally from Salina, Kansas, Burcin graduated from Lampeter-Strasburg High School in Lampeter, Pennsylvania, where he was a 10-time letterwinner in three sports. Burcin earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Liberty University in 2009. A member of the Golf Coaches Association of America, Burcin is married to Dr. Michelle Burcin, who was a standout swimmer at the University of Cincinnati. In 2011, the couple gave birth to their first child, daughter Josie.

The CoachesPrior to 1922 Wisconsin did not have a var-sity golf team, but competition thrived at the club level. The golf club represented the uni-versity at some of the Western Conference Championship matches, placing third in 1906 and 1913, and fourth in 1915. Golf became a varsity sport in 1922, but Wisconsin did not have a coach until 1926 when Joe Steinauer was appointed for one year. George Levis took over in 1927 for a year, Andy Leith coached in 1928, and Levis returned for 1929–31. Steinauer then returned in 1932 and coached the golf team until his retirement in 1951. His dual meet record for 19 years was 100 wins, 61 losses and 6 ties (.617).

John Jamieson succeeded Steinauer in 1952 and boasted three individual Big Ten tournament champions and one team cham-pionship in 1957. In his 18 years as head coach, Jamieson’s overall record at Wisconsin showed 171 wins, 81 losses and five ties for a .675 percentage. His teams placed in the Big Ten’s first division five times, including a sec-ond-place finish in 1963 (one stroke behind Minnesota) and third-place finishes in 1952, 1955 and 1966. Tom Bennett moved into the head coach position after Jamieson’s retirement in 1969. He would remain at Wisconsin through seven seasons before being replaced by Dennis Tiziani. Tiziani brought the team into upper division status in the Big Ten, winning back-to-back men’s conference titles in 1993 and 1994, UW’s first Big Ten titles since 1957. Besides the two Wisconsin individuals that advanced to the NCAA championships, he led three squads to the NCAA regional champion-ship, two of which advanced to the national championship. Jim Schuman was named the sev-enth Wisconsin head golf coach in 2003. Schuman’s teams have had three of the top four lowest team scoring averages in school history including the record of 293.22 (7,917 strokes/27 rounds) set in 2004–05. His 2007 and 2008 teams were the last teams to attend the NCAA Regional Championships and he had an individual qualifier in Dan Woltman who attended the 2009 Regional. In 2011, Michael Burcin was named head coach of the Badgers after spending seven years as an assistant at South Carolina. Burcin arrived at Wisconsin after serving as the assis-tant coach of Team USA at the 2011 Palmer Cup which took place in Greenwich, Conn.
