From Our Presidents’ Pens Well isn’t this the most beautiful February in a long time? The CQA web site www .canadianquilter .com has been updated and you can find all the issues of the CQA Newsletters. In the current issue you will find information about “Winds of Inspiration” Quilt Canada 2010 in Calgary, April 28 to May 1. It’s time to start thinking about Nominations in April and Elections in May. The Nominations Committee will be getting in touch with those who already hold a position to ask if they are willing to let their names stand, and then will approach all other members to fill any vacant positions. Better yet would be for you as NQG members to e-mail or call either Avril Valentine or Eimear Keane, committee chairpersons, and volunteer. We are in need of both afternoon and evening members on each committee to keep the continuity of information flowing. Evening members, just a reminder that the March evening Guild meeting starts at a different time than usual - see the Program Committee article below. We will break for coffee while Karen Tottman packs up her merchandise. At approximately 7:15 p.m. a representative from the Red Cross will accept the quilts that have been donated for the Chemainus/Duncan flood disaster. Our business meeting will follow. Speaking of coffee, our guild coffee committee has been trying for quite some time to be “green” in regards to Styrofoam cups. We no longer purchase or use these items, and the church kitchen china/utensils are not for our use. Unfortunately our Guild guideline “ that we must all bring our own cof fee cup to guild meetings and t ake them home to wash” seems to have slipped our minds lately. Last afternoon guild meeting our coffee committee had to wash 30+ coffee cups and the evening committee was similar. We do not want to put our coffee committee in the position of having to refuse anyone coffee or tea because they do not have their own mug, so please get back into the habit of bringing your own mug with you to guild meetings, workshops, potlucks etc. After talking with Gladys Dikken our Coffee Committee Chairperson we have decided that she will have a few guild owned coffee mugs on hand STRICTLY for the use of members/guest joining us that meeting. New Call to Entry Form

With our Quilt Show just over three monthsaway, your sewing will have increased tofever pitch levels.

I have had a few inquiries about the Call toEntry form. There is a new version of theentry form at the end of this newsletterwhich contains a line to indicate whetheryou would like to sell your quilt.

The picture you need to attach to the entryform is of your quilt, whether it is finishedor not at this point. It gives the ShowHanging Committee a better idea of thestyle, color way and mood of the quilt sothat they may better showcase your entry. We ask that you be very diligent in fillingout the form, since the information on theentry form is used for several committees.

Entry deadline is Guild Day on April 21. Thewrite-up of your quilt needs to be 75 wordsor less as this will be pinned to your quiltfront. We use this method of providinginformation about the entry instead of acatalogue. Again, if you have any furtherquestions about the form (as we understandthat there is so much information squeezedinto one page), please do not hesitate toemail me at [email protected]

Allow workshops and demos from world class tutors to come to you, in the comfort of your own home, whenever you like; it’s easy andconvenient. You can join in anytime of the day or night online at www.Justhands-on.tv the UK’s first patchwork and quilting tv channel

Here is a photo of the winning quilt forthe Manitoba Homecoming CelebrationCoreen Zerr and her sister-in-law, PhyllisGagne made. It was displayed inManitoba House during the WinterOlympics in Vancouver.

The Surrey Art Gallery and Vancouver 2010 CulturalOlympiad present the “Quilt of Belonging”, a 36-metre

tapestry portraying the rich cultural legacies of all theaboriginal peoples in Canada and every nation in

the world, until April 4 at the Surrey Art Gallery,13750 - 88 Avenue, Surrey 604-501-5566

One of our members, Betty Hamilton has a blockin this fantastic cultural quilt. She was the principal

designer for the Monaco block while Daphne Howellsprovided the images. The central pennant resembles the

celebratory banners used throughout the country and featuresa depiction of the Monaco Palace, the official residence of

Prince Rainier III. A form of black-work (a ‘simple yet challenging counted-threadembroidery,’ which was often used during the Elizabethan era to ornament women’sclothing and household items) done by Suzanne Labrie, creates the illusion ofshadows lingering over the castle. The palace is flanked by rows of lozenges -symbols of honesty and constancy, as well as tokens of noble birth - embroidered inone of the national colours. Crowning the banner is a gold-work coronet, created bya variety of filling stitches worked in metallic threads, symbolizing the principality.
