Editor’s Note

Let it be through this publication we relive the memories of 91 years of existence.

Not all memories are great but they are best in their own ways. Being the oldest

organization, the UP Ranchers’ Club has surpassed different levels of hardships

in the field of academics, socio-civic matters, and life itself through kinship and

balance. Highlights in this publication are the features on rodeo competition.

as acting PRO, it is my pleasure to work on this issue - its 25th. It is an honor and

also a challenge for me to express through words in this publication what the

club has faced during the last term leading up to the events this year. I express

my deepest gratitude to the people who contributed to the completion of this

publication. Some may choose to remain anonymous but what is important is

how one can help, not what one can get from helping.

Kudos to the UP Ranchers’ Club! It has been 91 years of taking the bull by the

horns. Keep the fire burning.

91 years of taking the bull by the hornsSa unang pagkakataon, ang mensahe mula sa gobernador ay nakasulat sa wikang

Filipino- ang tagalog. Sa paggamit ng sariling wika, higit kong mapapakita ang tunay

kong naiisip at nadarama. Heto ang tula na inaalay ko sa inyong lahat:

Message from the Governor

Siyam napu’t isang taong paglalakbay,

Dugong ranchero sa ati’y nalaytay,

Maging pawis sa ati’y tumagaktak,

Tumulong magbuhat sa ating tatak.

O Ranchero kung tayo ay tawagin,

Anumang panganib ay susuungin,

Kung baka man ang ating haharapin,

Hindi papayag tayo ay suwagin.

Buong tapang kung tayo ay lumaban,

Hinding-hindi natatakot masaktan,

Sa bawat sakit nating matatamo,

Siyang paglakas ng’ating mga kamao.

Bumagsak ma’y di tayo papapigil,

Muling tatayo, kailanman di pasisiil,

Magbabalik at pilit susugurin,

Pagsubok sa ati’y lilingkisin .

K’ya mga residente ,aking payo,

Sa taong ito, tayo ay magtino!

Di biro kung pa’no ‘to naabot,

S’yang kaluwalhatiang ‘ting

sinasambot.

Maging mas masigasig sa paggawa,

At lalong iwasan natin pag-ngawa!

Sapagkat to’y walang kapupulutan,

Kung sa pagkilos ay may kakulangan!

Maging mas masinop sa paggawa,

At siya rin nating ikagiginhawa!

‘pagkat oras’t pagod na inilaan,

‘Unti man, pupuntaha’y may katiyakan!

Maging mas mapusok sa paggawa,

Sa bagong karanasa’y wag mangamba!

Malaking hamon sa’yo’y nakaamba,

Katapat lang matinding paghahanda!

Ganun pa man, ’wag nating kalimutan,

Noon pa man, ating mga natutunan,

- Ang pagpapakumbaba , pagkukusa,

Pagmamahal, respeto’t , pagkakaisa.

Magmula nang ako’y maupo,

Bilang tinitingalang gobernador,

Responsibilidad na mabigat,

Ay aking sinisikap na iangat.

Ngunit ang dala’y nagiging magaan,

‘Pagkat mga ranchero ay nariyan,

Mga balikat nag-sama- sama ,

Di alintana ang bigat, nakikipasan.

Kaya ngayon ay aking sinasambat,

Aking taos pusong pasasalamat,

Sa suporta’t lakas inyong binigay,

Ng mga residente pati alumni.

Sa mga residenteng mababait,

Kung maituturing mang mabait (?),

Sa alumni na palaging maaasahan,

Handang tumulong sa

nangagailangan,

Marami man tayong pagkakaiba,

Marami man tayong pagkakasaliwa,

Iisa lang ang ating adhikain,

Ang rurok ng tagumpay ay abutin.

Bilang pagtatapos ng tulang ito,

Nais kong magiwan ng isang panuto,

Ngayon ako’y bigyan ng pahintulot,

Gumamit ng salitang sa Tagalog ay

baluktot.

Mga salitang tiyak na magsasabi,

Sa mga rancherong taga-UPLB,

Kung paano dapat nating

makakamtam,

Siyang tagumpay na ating inaasam.

“Take the bull, By the horns.”

the physique and air of a military trained soldier which she

got from three years of training in the UPLB ROtC, in which

she was once corps commander, made her vulnerable to

common military stereotypes such as being rigid and

somewhat short of emotion. But once you get to know

her really well, you’ll realize that she’s very warm, bubbly

and at certain times, very animated. Most people also get

surprised when they find out that she has a thing for cuddly

stuffed toys and other cute things.

Governor Denise is one of those people you might describe

as multitalented – she can sing, dance, act and cook to

name a few – but what she most excels in is sports. She was

a member of her high school’s badminton and volleyball

varsity. She enjoys such physical activities because they

give her the rush and push her limits – things she found

in rodeo which in 2011, lured her into trying out for

UPLB Rascals, the university’s selection team for Rodeo

Masbateño. training and bonding with other Ranchers for

several months further developed her interest in rodeo and

the UP Ranchers’ Club which led to her eventually joining

the organization. Since then, she has been competing in

different rodeo competitions together with the members

of the club. Last Rodeo Masbateño this april, she bagged

the title of being the winner of the first ever female bull

riding competition in the country.

Minutes before the bull riding competition, while some of

her contenders were just nervously waiting for their turn

to be over, Gov Denise, who really was just a substitute

bull rider, was intently observing the performance of other

players and was thinking of techniques on how to win the

said rodeo event because she was very determined to win.

Gov Denise is a person with a strong determination. She

works hard and does her best to achieve her personal goals

and her aspirations for the club. She does not take criticisms

negatively but uses them as her motivation to do better.

Gov Denise may be known as a determined, hardworking

and innovative person but she is most known by her fellow

brothers and sisters in the club for being fearless and

unfazed by the challenges the club faces and confronting

those problems head-on. She stands on her own feet no

matter how difficult the situation may be. truly, Governor

Denise is an epitome of this anniversary’s theme “taking the

bull by the horns.”

Governor’s Profile

She works hard and does her best to achieve her personal goals and her aspirations for the club.

94th Loyalty Day & Alumni HomecomingJulie Lazo - Gaur ‘11

the UP Ranchers’ Club has participated in the 94th Loyalty

Day and alumni Homecoming last October 10, 2012

with the theme “UPLB: Handa sa Pagbabago ng Panahon

at Kapaligiran.” the celebration started with a parade

beginning from the Veterinary Medicine / animal Science

Complex up to the D. L. Umali auditorium’s facade which

was turned into a temporary stage. the different student

organizations and various university offices took part

in the parade wearing their org shirts and showcasing

their talents in front of the stage. afterwards, the parade

participants proceeded to their own celebrations.

the UP Ranchers’ Club held their celebration at Villegas

Hall, animal Science Complex. Various alumni batches

from 1960s to the present joined the said event, and

together with the resident members they enjoyed the food

each brought for lunch. Ranchers’ alumnus and former

Senator Juan Miguel zubiri dropped by the celebration

and gave uplifting short conversations and support to the

organization’s contemporary members.

Branding cows had been practicing by animal handlers

as early as ancient time primarily to identify each animal’s

owner and for spiritual protection according to egyptian

herders. Similar with UP Ranchers’ Club, the night of

the induction of new members and the new executive

committee happens in “Branding Ball”. this is a privileged

night where new breeds of Ranchers are branded and

exclusively listed themselves to the long-lasting extension

of the family of cowboys and cowgirls that had been

running in the University for 90 great years. the celebration

of the Branding Ball is a culminating event for the week long

festivities for the UP Ranchers’ Club anniversary

In the night of august 19, 2012, the 90th anniversary and

Branding ball of the UP Ranchers’ Club was held in the

UPLB Senior Social Garden. 8 new members were inducted

by former Marshall Jeromel tenorio. they were Katherine

Lagman (Night Hawk 2011); Julie lazo and Mikkaela

Benedict Mones (Gaur 2011); Mark Jhon Patrick Rase and

earl Jeremy Buera (Hidalgo 2012); Mark Bien Malonzo,

Dean Marc Bolima and Jannyne alexa Necio (Paud 2012);

and May Sarah Jacalal (Herens 2012). after their induction,

the new members performed a sensational dance number

to entertain the crowd. the newly inducted executive

committee was led by Governor Jens David Punzalan and

Marshal Rio Letran. Guest of Honor Dr. Ulysses Lustria gave

the night a heartwarming ambiance through his inspiring

words of joyfulness and gratitude. Vanessa Felices was

honored as the Most Outstanding Rancher for academic

year 2011-2012 for her uncountable contributions and

significant influence to the Club.

the 90th Branding ball was indeed a night to remember

where everyone enjoyed each other’s company

accompanying with drinks and delightful foods. It was a

wonderful chance to gather alumni from various batches

and places around the Philippines and even abroad.

Despite the distance, the presence of agusan Del Sur

Club PSU (Pangasinan State University) Chapter alumni,

and resident members was very overwhelming. abraham

Quilang’s Singing Band covered the venue with sweet

sounding songs where other members joined to jive and

sing too. the memorabilia photos from the photo booth

were also a pleasure to everyone. after the program, a big

circle of members sang the Ranchers’ Philippines Hymn

“Home on the Range”. the moment was very special to

everyone because of the chance of witnessing great

numbers of alumni, resident and other chapter members

singing their hearts out. It signifies the 90th glorious years

of strong brotherhood and rodeo excellence which is long

lived. COWBOY BY CHOICe! BRaNDeD FOR LIFe!

Last February, UPLB once again celebrated one of its annual

events which were made to reconcile the rich history of the

university. It is said that this event is part of the students’

protest against Martial Law back then during the time

of Marcos. this event comes in the most familiar name

of February Fair which last for almost a week. Part of its

program included daily contest and concerts from different

bands and active talented students of the university. the

event was celebrated on the grounds of Freedom Park

where concessionaires and other business (minded) people

gathered around. Moreover, carnival rides like Ferris wheel

and carnival games were all over the place. Because of this,

people from different places came to UPLB to enjoy the

annual ecstatic event. Of course, this event was not possible

without the participation of sponsors and organization in

the campus. among other participating organizations, the

UP Ranchers Club took the spotlight.

UP Ranchers Club is known as the longest running

organization in the campus and one of the pioneering

socio-civic organizations in the university. as part of their

Feb Fair 2013Dean Marc Bolima - Paud ‘12

celebration, they conducted two events which most

likely left the people and students in complete confusion,

enthusiast and excitement. First, they ushered the puzzling

CaNSHOOtaN in a ten by ten ground that was fenced

with attractive banderitas attached loosely on bamboo

poles. this gave enough space for brave and enthusiastic

participants to go along and throw the lassoes on the

drums. Canshootan’s objective is to launch the lasso on the

can’s surface and was derived from the common practice

of cowboys in lassoing cows. In this event, the drum served

as the cow and the participant was the cowboy expected

to catch the cow. this event surely had gathered many

peoples’ attention, be it young or young at hearts, not only

because of the fact that it was uncommon to them but also

because of the shouts and encouragements they heard

from observers and other spectators. Only few participants

succeeded and completed the mission but many left the

area with smirks and atonement.

the second activity that the club had ushered was the

giving of free bullwhip tutorials. Since it is now evident that

Page 17: UP Ranchers' Club Gazette 2013

Gazette august 2013 15

the club is rich with young cowboys

interested and have the talent in

cracking bullwhips, they want to

share this to the mob. this free tutorial

lesson had garnered more participants

than the canshootan event. the

reason behind this was because of the

rambunctious sound the whips were

producing. as the young cowboys

performed their superb tricks, people

gathered around and watched their

performance. this free tutorial will

surely be a good Fund Raising activity

for the Finance Committee if they

planned to give lessons on whip

cracking.

Over all, the week-long celebration

was indeed a success. Not to mention

that alumni members gathered

around the booth and celebrated

together with the resident members,

with funny jokes and ice-cold booze.

another year has come yet another

journey for the UP Ranchers Club to

prove that they are simply the best.

Keep the fire burning, Ranchers!

Page 18: UP Ranchers' Club Gazette 2013

16 UP Ranchers’ Club

Last april 13, 2013 the UP Ranchers’ Club had their extension

activity to help the people in the Gawad Kalinga Village.

Our aim is to help those people lessen their responsibility

as a part of their community and so we decided to hold the

extension activity there. Governor Denise Paola Lachica

together with Mark Bien L. Malonzo, Jean Louise Ramilo,

Denzel Camuyot, Jens David Punzalan, Vanessa Felices,

Julie Lazo, earl Jeremy Buera, ace Philip Dupla and edward

Obedoza helped the people to fix the broken wall caused

by the last typhoon. We asked one of the workers there why

we should fix the wall immediately, and he said that their

lives would be in danger if it will not be fixed, the houses

nearby will be destroyed by running water for the wall was

built to protect them from the harmful nature.

Fixing the wall was a great challenge especially to those

who lives there, because tons of rocks that were the base

of the wall were scattered on the creek bed are to be

transported to other place to recreate the destroyed base

of the wall. also, the scorching rays of the sun added upon

fixing the wall made it harder to work in that area. We had

a break where we had interaction with the community that

lives there. they were pleased that we had helped them

and gave us soup that they said we have to eat because

it was a blessing, in return, we shared them our bread and

gave them some drinks and other food.

there still exists a community that would help each other

despite of having a difficulty in finance. We were glad that

we helped them and through that little way, we had made

them smile and gave them hope that they are not alone

and that people in different class are willing to help them

in times of need.

Years pass by in the University but the Open tambayan of

UP Ranchers’ Club is (of ) the event that the whole University

patrons don’t like to miss.

the Open tambayan of UP Ranchers’ Club is one of the

biggest hit in UPLB and 2012 version was indeed a success.

Over 400 students, faculty members, and other university

constituents enjoyed the Open tambayan with delightful

foods like pancit, shanghai and maja blanca. Where could

you find an open tambayan with liempo hot straight from

the grill and a mouth-watering Lechon given in chunk?

and with a (beautiful) stunning setting decorated with

gleaming torches in Math Building, students surely enjoyed

it a lot. the Open tambayan of UP Ranchers’ Club surely

never disappoints.

the most awaited rodeo competition in the country unfolds

in the southernmost province of Bicol Region - Masbate.

Four hundred cowboys across the country had joined the

20th Rodeo National Finals in Masbate City from april 9 to 14

this year. this five-day rodeo event featured Php 8 million

worth of 200 heads of cattle and 30 bulls that rumbled

around the great Masbate City Rodeo Grand arena. the

cattle and non-cattle events during the Rodeo National

Finals include casting down, 2 and 4-person carambola,

Bull Riding, lassoing on foot, steer wrestling from

horseback, steer lassoing from horseback, Bullwhipping

and load carrying. each of these events shows basic rodeo

skills which are significant in a daily ranch activity and have

been properly, safely and carefully planned with the human

and animals’ welfare in equal priority. events are divided

into two categories: professional and student. In the

professional category, the participating teams were Bohol

los Masoneros, siquijor rodeo team, Xavier university

alumni Rodeo team, impasug-ong rodeo team, Benguet

state university alumni rodeo team, libona rodeo team,

Zubiri Brothers rodeo team, Balud cowboys, cuervo

Berde rodeo team, MG rodeo team, and wellard rodeo

team. the 10 teams competed in the student category

came from Benguet state university, central Bicol state

university, dEBEsMscaT, south western university,

Bohol island state university, Visayas state university,

Xavier university, Mindanao state university, central

Mindanao university and the delegates from university

of the Philippines-los Banos, the uPlB Rascals.

the UPLB Rascals was a three year program started in 2011

and was developed and pursued by the animal Science and

Dairy Cluster (aDSC) with the initiative of aDSC Director Dr.

Cesar C. Sevilla, Dr. elpidio agbisit, Dr. amado angeles and

Sir tony zuñiga. the goal of the program was to enhance

the competitive cattle handling skills and work attitude of

UPLB rodeo players to be able to contend in the national

level of rodeo in the country by sending them to the Rodeo

Masbatenyo National Finals. the UPLB Rascals is composed

of rodeo players from different UPLB organizations

particularly UP Ranchers’ Club, UPLB Rodeo Club (RC) and

UP animal Science Society (UPaSS). this year’s delegation

UPaSS, UPLB Rodeo Club. the coaching

staffs that responsibly handled the

team were Dr. elpidio agbist, Dr.

Julienne Hurtada, Sir angelo tapia,

Ma’am Karla Joy ty and Sir Bejo.

For the first time in the Philippines and in asia, the bull

riding competition for women was played in the Rodeo

Masbatenyo National Finals 2013 and has caught the

attention of the stunned audience around the arena

with the breathtaking ride every woman took on top of a

raging bull. Bull riding is an event where the objective is

to stay in the back of the bull for at least 8 seconds while it

jumps up and down, back and forth. Denise Paola Lachica

of the UPLB Rascals, a veterinary medicine student and a

member of the UP Ranchers Club topped long all other

riders in the bull riding women competition even though

managing only 6 seconds before throwing off the bucking

bull. Despite her win, she still went head on and suffered a

temporary hip discomfiture from her fall. Nevertheless, she

was proudly proclaimed in history as the first ever woman

bull riding champion in asia and in the Philippines.

“I do not find the entire rodeo an ironic sport for someone

who has opted to study and practice the proper way of

taking care of animals”. Denise Paola Lachica emphasized

for a local media interview.

the rodeo competition was a day-long event highlighting

cattle handling such as cattle wrestling, two- and four-

person carambola, casting down, bullwhip cracking, load

carrying. the Bull Riding competition was the most awaited

event of all. Unfortunately, all the riders were not able to

stay at back of the bull at least 8 seconds. at the end of the

competition the UPLB Rascals Rodeo team notched the top

spot for the Women’s Division.

this is the summary of results of the events played:

the UP Ranchers’ Club recently competed in Rodeo ala

Garciano 2012 as part of their “Kabakahan Festival” annually

held ever 1st of December with the theme “Bawat Garciano,

Makabagong Batangueño, Huwarang Pilipino”. the festival

was also in line with the celebration of their 63rd Founding

anniversary. the Municipality of Padre Garcia, Batangas

celebrated the event as a way of enriching tourism and

emphasizing their primary source of income, cattle and

trading. the festival was the brain child of Hon. Mayor

Prudencio Guiterrez to promote the Padre Garcia Livestock

action Market which is the largest in the Southern Luzon.

For the second consecutive year, the UP Ranchers’ Club

dominated Rodeo Garciano by bringing home the overall

championship against eight other competing rodeo

student teams from various universities and colleges around

Luzon such as Central Luzon State University- Rodeo Club

(CLSU), Bicol State University, Central Bicol State University

of agriculture (CBSUa), Wranglers-araneta (DLSU), Rodeo

Club-GaUF, UPLB Rodeo Club, Union of Students of animal

Science-GaUF and Wranglers’ Club-Bicol Chapter.

all the players showcased their overwhelming strength and

exciting rodeo skills as they rumbled on four cattle events

such as lassoing (tying to the nearest post), wrestling, four-

person carambola, and casting down. Before the events

were played, the best muse was awarded to UPLB Rodeo

Club. Gorgeously dressed Mikkaela Benedict Mones of

batch Gaur 2011 represented UP Ranchers’ Club in Best

Muse Category.

the main highlight of the day was the appearance of

former-senator Juan Miguel “Migz” zubiri and Calatagan

Mayor, Peter Oliver M. Palacio who were alumnus of the

UP Ranchers’ Club Philippines wherein they also played an

exhibition game by fiercely wresting a 750-pound cattle to

the ground. the people of Padre Garcia were overwhelmed

of their performance knowing their Rodeo skills were not

gone after all.

the UP Ranchers’ Club ranked in the top 3 in 6 events which

another chapter unfolds as the responsibility of leading the

of the UP Ranchers’ Club Philippines to the newly elected

2013 executive Committee last March 26, 2013. Ranchers’

New and Old executive Committee, resident members and

alumni supported the said event. the ceremony was led

by Rio Letran, the outgoing Marshal, from the beginning

lineup of activities for the night until the formal turn over

ceremony. the traditional liquor shot was done as the

outgoing officers took note of the succeeding officer’s

determination to continue and live up to the expectation of

the members that elected them in such position. the new

another highlight of the festival is the Cattle Drive in the

morning of april 10, which re-enacts how the locals in

the olden days would drive a herd of cattle from ranches

to the pier to be brought to Manila. almost a hundred

cattle were herded by horsemen in this activity. Different

amusing features besides the rodeo competitions were

also showcased in the festival like horse parade, kalesa

ride, street barn dancing, livestock show, trade fair, beer

plaza, nightly events, beef-cooking contest, cattle drive

and herding, and ranch tour, and many others. the Rodeo

Masbatenyo Festival has been an integral part of the

Masbateño culture, gaining the province the title “the

Rodeo Capital of the Philippines.”

after a week long battle against fierce, fast-moving calves

and massively terrifying 900-pound bulls, the competition

finally came into conclusion. the dominance of Xavier

University in both student’s men and women category was

absolutely displayed as they notched the 1st place overall in

both categories. the Rodeo King and Queen in the student’s

division were also awarded to them. the crowd favorite and

3-time defending champion Libona Rodeo team capped

the 1st place over-all in the professional division.

Rodeo Masbatenyo/ from page 19

Cowboys and cowgirls from the UPLB Rascals also won

places in various events in Rodeo Masbatenyo National

Finals. Cris Reshon Guiral and Mark Joseph Singcay won

2nd place in 2-person Carambola – Men’s Division with a

time of 1 minute and 11 seconds. Vanessa Felices with

a UPaSS player wrestled their way to bagged 3rd place in

2-person Carambola – Women’s Division. Meanwhile, Mark

Jhon Patrick Rase and a UPLB Rodeo Club girl bullwhipper

exhibited their improved whip cracking freestyle to get

the second best prize for Bullwhipping Men’s and Women

student’s category respectively.

this year’s edition of Rodeo Masbatenyo was again a huge

success for the Rodeo Masbatenyo Incorporated (RMI) led

by its President Judge Juan Manuel Sese and Rodeo Director

Leo Gozum. also, without the coordination and preparation

of the Volunteer Rodeo Officials and Organizers of Masbate

(VROOM), the technical arm of Rodeo Masbateño, Inc.

(RMI), the finest flow of the competition will be impossible.

With all other persons and organizations behind the idea of

this overwhelming event, the Rodeo Masbatenyo Festival

surely accounts its name as one of the most celebrated

festival in the Philippines.

Turn Over Rites/ from page 23

in the academy, the resident members set up an advance

celebration after the turn over rites by having 18 roses and

18 shots which were participated by the brods and sisses.

as the night goes off, it served as a celebration for the

turn over Rites and as a night worth remembering for the

departure of a fellow Ranchera.

Cowboys by choice, branded for life.
