The National Literacy and Numeracy testing is happening for all students in Years 3,5,7 and 9 this week. Students in these year levels in schools across Australia will undertake the same tests on these days. Students have their skills assessed in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar), and Numeracy. Test results provide additional information on how students are progressing in these areas. Moonta Area School is committed to improving the literacy and numeracy levels of our students through quality and evidenced based teaching and learning processes. are strong partners and OPAL sponsor many activities

and learning experiences in our school.

Every 12 months, OPAL introduces a new healthy lifestyle message to our community. The 2014 message was launched this evening with the screening of a documentary that looked at the theme Life Looks Brighter Outside.

Life Looks Brighter Outside is in response to the dramatic decrease in children spending time outdoors. South Australian children now spend less time outdoors than at any other time in our history. While the increased amount of children’s screen time is one reason for the decrease in outdoor activity, other factors play a role such as an increasingly scheduled non-active after school life, smaller back yards and concerns about child safety. Life Looks Brighter Outside aims to support families to enjoy time together exploring local parks and playgrounds and participating in other active pursuits outdoors.

As part of the evening we were asked to recall our favourite “Wild Time” memory – something we did outside with our families. The first thing that popped into my head was when my mum and dad helped build an igloo at Kindy with other parents– I think of

chicken wire and plaster ….. all the kids “helped” so it took weeks! Another was tad poling at the Carisbrook Park – it didn’t really matter if we caught any – we got really dirty and laughed a lot anyway! The last one that came immediately to mind was trips to the Whispering Wall – somewhere in the Barossa Valley from memory – we’d take a picnic, run around, whisper to each other and run around some more. I remembered many other “wild times” and hope that in 35 years my children will be able to remember similar antics with as much happiness.

If you are interested in OPAL suggestions to increase family fun outside, please visit their website at http://www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/wps/wcm/connect/Public+Content/SA+Health+Internet/Healthy+living/Healthy+places/Where+we+live+and+play/OPAL/

Area School in the coming weeks of Term 2 for Years 10, 11 and 12. Senior students will be invited to opt into the program by bringing, from home, a personal computing device (laptop, tablet) to use for school tasks within the classroom. Further information will be provided to families in the coming weeks to get the PHASE 1 stage of the BYOD program up and going. Should a student not opt into the BYOD program, computers will still be accessible.

BYOD promotes a more technology enriched environment and benefits students during their learning day as they have ready access to a computing device – their own - anytime, anywhere for typing and presenting assignments, researching,

and designing. Student devices will be able to use our secure WIFI network.

PHASE 2 of the BYOD initiative will invite Year 7, 8 and 9 into the program for Term 3 and 4, and it is anticipated that PHASE 3 will begin as of January 2015, whereby all Middle and Senior School students will have the opportunity to use their personal devices to support their learning in the classroom.

Our school is excited to announce that a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) technology initiative is in the process of being implemented at Moonta

After a change of day due to weather the R-7 MAS Cross Country was held on Monday 5th May.

Considering the short notice due to the change of day we were still well supported by parents and friends

who came along to cheer on the competitors.

On behalf of the students and staff, I’d like to offer a huge “Thank You” to our Breakfast Club volunteers.

I’d particularly like to thank Lorraine Webb for her help and support during the past year. She ‘filled in’ for us while Jan Oxley has taken some time out. Lorraine is moving interstate and we would like to wish her the very best with her new adventure.

I’d also like to welcome Kim and Cassie who have offered to help out, along with our regular volunteers, Suzanne, Yvonne and Megan.

Breakfast Club is open daily, from 8am in the Music Room (near the OSHC room). We offer cereal, toast, milo and juice for a nominal charge of 20c or two empty cans. On Tuesdays, we have “Try it Tuesday” where the students can try some different foods. This term, we plan to have pikelets, spaghetti toasties, eggs on toast, banana toasties, ham and cheese muffins amongst other things. Kids – keep your eye on the daily bulletin for more information!

This year we will once again host a group of students from Meidai High School near Tokyo. We have been advised the students will be with us from the 27th of July to the 10th of August. (Weeks 2 & 3 of Term 3). The 27th and the 10th are Sundays. The students would arrive on the 27th and depart on the 10th and this is organised by International Education Services so families collect their student from our school and drop them off there for departure.

The Japanese students are 15 and 16 and we are looking for families of senior students who may like to home host. In the past middle school students have also enjoyed the experience so please give it some thought.

During the day the Japanese students will attend school to improve their English. The family’s role is to provide the after school Moonta experience of Australian family life. Those who have done this in the past have really enjoyed the experience.

There is an accreditation process which is not difficult. Janine Bennett will be carrying out the administrative side of the homestay and Stacey Golding will be conducting the English lessons and school experience. Please call us at school on 88 252 088 if you would like more information or fill out the reply slip and return by Friday the 30th of May (week 5). Thank you, Stacey and Janine. __________________________________________________________________________________________

Next Wednesday night, May 21st at 7:30pm the South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre will be holding an information evening at Kadina Memorial School for parents and students who wish to know more about the application process for university and TAFE positions in 2015. Flinders University and the University of South Australia will make presentations about a range of university issues. There may also be a presentation by a TAFE representative. (Adelaide Uni tends to visit schools individually – but the application process is the same.) After the presentations students and parents can talk one-on-one to the representatives about any university or TAFE matter. They will also have brochures about all the different courses available. Moonta Area School students who are interested in going to Uni will attend a presentation in the afternoon at KMS. We have been informed that the evening presentation is not the same.

If you would like any further information please contact Meredith Westbrook on 88252088 or 88251921.
