MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR

As we close out our 2015 Calendar Year, The Michigan Accordion Society would like to thank each of you for your financial support over the 2015CY. Without your support our Society would not be able to function as a Federal & State li-censed 501c3 organization and would not be able to provide the community with the value added services in order to keep the Accordion viable. As we enter in the 2016CY we ask that you please continue to support our award winning society by renewing your MAS Membership which will expire soon on December 31, 2015. To renew please fill out the attached Membership

application which can be found in this newsletter and please mail your check and your 2016 Member-ship card will be sent to you right away. Remember your Membership card is valuable and allows for significant discounts to our Monthly Music Events. As we enter the 2016 calendar year we are very excited as we will be celebrating our 20th year anni-versary as the Michigan Accordion Society, which happens to be the longest running Accordion So-ciety in Michigan's History. We have already begun working to bring some great guest artists in for next year and we are looking forward in making some significant announcements in conjunction with our 20 year anniversary celebration. This past quarter was memorable as we participated in the 2015 Columbus Day Parade and won an award for best float theme. This was a significant achievement for MAS this year and we had a great team of people and sponsorships who helped to make our float very successful! More info about this event is included in this newsletter! Effective January 16, 2016 our new location at Crispellis in Berkeley, Michigan will prove to be a nice centralized location to hold our events. This new location will draw more Members from the West Side and Crispelli’s staff loves our Accordion Society and their owner is doing everything they can to make our events enjoyable. We will even have accordionist strolling in the restaurant as early as 5:30 PM on the dates of our Monthly Music Events. Our members and their guests will enjoy wonder-ful food, beverage and music experience in a wonderful setting! “Please note, we will be meeting at the Crispellis Orchard Lake location for our Dec 8th, Xmas Party” As you enjoy this newsletter, please enjoy your Holiday Season and we look forward to another great Accordion Society year, right here in Michigan! From all of our board members…...we wish each of you a Merry Blessed Christmas & Happy New year!

MAS MEMBERS IN ACTION Donating their time to promote MAS

IF YOU HAVE AN ACCORDION NEWS PHOTO, OR AN UPCOMING PERFORMANCE, PLEASE SEND IT TO BOB BERTA SO WE

CAN INCLUDE IT IN YOUR NEXT NEWSLETTER & OUR FACEBOOK PAGE!

Our Vice President, Bob Berta, donated his time and performed for 5 hours at the Shelby Twp, Michigan restaurant “LA DOLCE VITA”. The owner sponsored a free Thanksgiving dinner for the poor and homeless families on Monday, Nov. 23rd and provided a turkey dinner with all the trimmings in two sittings feeding a total of 400 people. Shown sitting in the picture are some of the volunteers along with La Dolce Vita’s owner, Enrico Rosselli, wife, and daughter standing in the back with Bob Berta. Among the dignitaries on hand were Ma-comb Country Sheriff Anthony Wickersham (standing next to Bob), and also attending were State Rep Peter Lucido, Macomb County prosecu-tor, Eric Smith, attorney Dawn Bartlolomeo, and nurse Mary Lebioda. La Dolce Vita is new to Shel-by Township, and the owner Enrico Rosselli also owns the original and famous La Dolce Vita restau-rant in Detroit.

The Bellini Opera and the Michigan Accordion Society hosts Special Performance in Northern Michigan Wine Country TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., Aug 31, 2015 — "Drink more wine!" yelled Tenor Aaron Caruso. "The more you drink, the better we

sound!" Members of the Michigan Accordion Society partnered with the Bellini Opera Society to give a special performance at Bonobo Winery in Traverse City, Michigan that marked the end of the 4th Annual Wine and Opera Festival. The performance gave attendees an up close look at the opera by turning Bonobo Winery’s 3,500 square foot patio into a stage for the afternoon. Hundreds of people were in attendance including owner and HGTV star Carter Oosterhouse and wife & Hollywood actress Amy Smart, as well as Brother Todd Oosterhouse and wife Caroline. “They give off so much energy and their raw talent is incredible," said Carter. "I am glad we were able to have them perform for us and I can't wait to hear them again next year." The singers included Tenor/Aaron Caruso, Soprano/Eva Evola, Mezzo-Soprano/Lisa Agazzi and Baritone/Dino Valle. The singers were accompanied by accordion players David Passalacqua and President of the Michigan Accordion Society Joe Recchia, who are all members of the Michigan Accordion Society. "The winery itself is a beautiful Hollywood setting," said Dino Valle. "So we wanted to make a Hollywood entrance." Dino and Aaron accompanied by accordion player Joe Recchia, drove into the vineyard in a four wheel drive Jeep while singing to announce their arrival. The group then gathered on the patio and sang classic opera songs such as “Habanera" from Bizet's "Carmen" and Aaron Caruso ended the afternoon by covering Frank Sinatra's "My Way". This marks the fourth year that the Bellini Opera Society led by President Rosolino Lo Duca and Co founder Dino Valle have been coming to Traverse City to perform opera in collaboration with Silvio "Tony" Ciccone (who's Hollywood Celeb-rity daughter is Madonna) as well as Mario Tabone. This is a wonderful example of how the Members of the Michigan Accordion Society donate and promote the Accordion in the great State of Michigan. Looking to the future, the group plans to keep coming back to Traverse City to spread their love of opera. Vineyard Owner, Mario Tabone, says he wants to expand the program into a weeklong event that is composed of different venues including the Traverse City Opera House. For more information please visit www.bonobowinery.com & www.bellinioperafoundation.com.

MAS News & Accordions around town

ACCORDION FRIENDLY OPEN MIC LOCATIONS

Many of our members enjoy attending not only MAS but OPEN MIC clubs in the area. There are a few outstanding Open MIC clubs that are particularly popular with our members. An OPEN MIC club has attendees sign up to play 2-3 tunes when they arrive. On any given night you will hear just about every possible type of instrument, different types of music such as folk, country, jazz, classi-cal, and some light pop music. The performers skill level ranges from the low end to professionals but everyone supports all the play-ers whatever their ability and it is common for attendees to get together for future duets, combos, etc. Ages range from young to “well seasoned” and all are family & Accordion friendly events. Please help us by supporting our partners below and attend their events: THE SHELBY MUSIC SOCIETY—Meets the second Saturday of each month from 7:00-10:00pm at the Shelby Senior Center Audi-torium on Van Dyke near 23 Mile Rd. Shelby Township, MI. Center is located at the rear of the city library. Admission is by dona-tion. Attendees often bring desserts to share at the break. Main St. in Romeo, MI SLOVENE AMERICAN CLUB, Melvindale, MI Accordion Jam, Every Friday Night 7:00 pm, MAS Members welcomed!

Accordion News Around Town!

MAS Honorary Member Steve Stolaruk Nominated as Man of the Year at the 5th Annu-al Sportsmen’s Wild Game Dinner - Oh Deer! You Should Have Been Here!

On November 6 the IACS hosted its 5th Annual Sportsmen’s Wild Game Dinner. Dr. Mike Aiello chaired this year’s event. Chef Alex Lozovoj (Son of our MAS Board Member Lorriane Lozovoj) and his crew outdid themselves, serv-ing appetizers of wild boar sliders, grilled quail, kangaroo sausage skewers, and fried alligator. These were followed by a family style dinner featuring smoked venison minestrone, ragu of rabbit pappardelle, duck and cherry ravioli, grilled elk and venison siciliano, Tuscan braised pheasant, buffalo osso bucco, salad, fingerling potatoes with dried figs and thyme, balsamic glazed root vegetables, and drunken pear and cranberry crostata for dessert. The evening’s activities included a firearms raffle conducted by Bass Pro Shops and Gregory Rinaldi, and a raffle of numerous other hunting-themed prizes and gift baskets. Godfather Cigar Bar and Lounge was on hand, with cigars and premium liquor, adding the alcohol and tobacco to the firearms. Local businessman and philanthropist Steve Stolaruk, Honorary MAS Mamber was honored as Man of the Year. Steve presented checks to the St. Louis Center, San Francesco Church, and St. Sabbas Orthodox Monastery, demonstrating why he was selected for this recogni-tion. MAS Members Aaron Caruso, Noelle Borgia and Joe Recchia provided the entertainment. MAS was also a sponsor recognized as a financial supporter for the event Article by Sandra Tornburg

MAS Members support the First International Screening of the Movie Teaser “Andrea Doria: Are the Passengers Saved” in Plymouth, Michigan On Sunday, November 8 the first international screening of the movie teaser for the docufilm “Andrea Doria: Are the Passengers Saved?” took place at a reception at Cantoro’s Market and Trattoria of Plymouth. The docufilm, written and produced by Pierette Domenica Simpson and directed by Luca Guardabascio, received rave reviews from the enthusi-astic audience of more than one hundred fifty guests. Pierette and her grandparents survived the catastrophic collision of the Andrea Doria and the Stockholm in 1956. The docufilm dramatizes her immigration, nightmare on the Atlantic, and her arrival in America. It is based on her critically acclaimed book Alive on the Andrea Doria! The Greatest Sea Res-cue in History. The film uses interviews with maritime experts, survivors, divers and archival footage to reveal the untold truth about the ship’s collision and its unjustly accused Captain Piero Calamai.Production of the film began in January of 2015. Director Luca Guardabascio of Rome has filmed numerous hours of dramatic reenactments and engaging inter-views in both Detroit and Italy, including Pierette’s village of Pranzalito in the province of Torino. The film is currently being edited and translated into English, and additional footage is being gathered to elevate the film to an even higher creative endeavor. Current fund-raising initiatives are for the post-production expenses: attending major film festivals, hiring notable actors, filming more dramatizations, creating special effects, and a website. Opportunities for participation in this exciting project start at $25 and are described on the forms included on this page. MAS Members Joe Recchia, Dino Valle and Eva Evola donated their time and entertained guests during the event. Article by Sandra Tornburg

COLUMBUS DAY PARADE IN MT. CLEMENS, MI October 10, 2015

The Michigan Accordion Society in partnership with Villa Penna of Sterling Heights, MI wins 1st place for best Float Theme at the 2015 Michigan Columbus Day Parade in Downtown Mt. Clemens, Michigan. This was a big honor as 43 floats participated in this years Parade. MAS President Joe Recchia said "Our float received so many compliments and we were told that people really en-joyed our spirit, music and float design and was so unique and well received that we were asked by other community parade organ-izers to bring our float and accordionists to other events throughout Michigan”. The Float featured 26 Float participants and 14 Ac-cordionists along with a wonderful display of Food and Wine table that was integrated in the front of the float called "The Taste of Italy”. The float was named "Santa Maria" after Christopher Columbus's ship. The idea was conceived at our MAS Board meeting and grew from just a discussion to designing, soliciting sponsors, securing materials, fabricating and winning 1st place. This was a significant accomplishment for the Michigan Accordion Society and a special thank you goes out to all the people who helped build the float as well many of our great sponsors who helped in mak-ing the Accordion float a great success! 18 Float Builders: Angela Beaumont, Bob Berta, Sal Cuccia, Jose-phine DiPalma, John & Carolyn Gobalis, Tony & Kathy Latona, George Penna, Sandy & Karen Polidori, Jim & Rose Rand, Sam Randazzo’s, Joe & Antonella Recchia, Beverly Simonenko & Anthony Wiederhold 26 Float Participants: Anthony & Gino Aiello, Angela Beaumont, Bob Berta, Sal Cuccia, Tony & Jen D’Agostini, John & Carolyn Gabalis, Nor-ma & Jerry Grijak, Pam Manos, Brianna Martino, Dave Passalaqua, Sandy & Karen Polidori, Lisa, Luca & Mia Polidori, Jim & Rose Rand, Sam Randazzo’s, Joe & Antonella Recchia, Beverly Simonenko, Antho-ny Wiederhold

THIS WINTER ACCORDION LESSON

SHOW YOUR ACCORDION SOME LOVE

In past issues I talked about how to improve your playing with tips on technic and phrasing. This month I am going to discuss how to extend your accordions life. This idea was triggered after seeing several accor-dions recently which frankly were in bad shape due to bad care, poor storage conditions, or lack of use. An accordion needs to have clean DRY air running through it. If you put it in a basement that is damp and dark that is a recipe for the demise of your accordion. Likewise putting it in an attic is just as bad….the hot Summer and freezing Winter temperatures will destroy the wax that holds the reeds. Here in Michigan we have low humidity during the Winter months and that can cause your accordion wood to shrink causing binding and even cracks. You may want to get a simple device to check the humidity in the area you store your accordion. These are available at music stores and are inexpensive. While an accordion has mechanical protection in its case….you may find that keeping it out in the open air but with a dust cover over it will extend its life. You should never put an accordion flat on its back in a car to prevent bass button suck when a car hits a big bump on the road. Safest is standing it with the bass side down or even better...on its front….(front of the accordion facing the ground). What type of accordion do you have? A normal accordion can be stored at home with its bass side down but if you have a tone chamber accordion you need to store it standing just like if it was being played. A tone chamber accordion has some of the reeds in a different orientation than a regular accordion and if you place it on the bass side as most of us do….it will cause leathers on the reeds to curl due to gravity and that will lead to air leaks by the reeds. The best thing you can do to prolong the accordions life is to play it...keep that air going through it. That way you avoid rusty reeds, accordion “bad breath” (mildew), and mechanical damage.

It is with deepest regret to advise that our oldest MAS Mem-

ber Mr. Quinto August Vitale passed away. Quinto A. Vitale,

age 101 passed away on October 2, 2015. Beloved husband

of the late Gilda Vitale. Quinto was very proud of his Italian

heritage and was a longtime member of the Michigan Accor-

dion Society, Sons of Italy, The Barisciano Club and the Ital-

ian American Culture Center. Entombment at Resurrection

Cemetery in Clinton Township. Prayers are with Qinto and

his family. We will miss you Quinto!
