Mark your calendar for the Poker Run - Saturday, September 9th! Our annual Poker Run raises money for the Colorado 99s Future Woman Pilot Scholarship Fund.

This year's route is: Centennial (APA), Rocky Mountain Metro (BJC), Front Range (FTG), Fort Collins-Loveland (FNL), and terminus Greeley (GXY).

This event is our primary fundraiser for the scholarship fund, and many volunteers are needed to ensure its success. If you don't plan to participate by flying, please consider helping out on the ground in one of the following ways:

handing out cards at one of the airports tallying final scores at the terminus in Greeley

contributing or securing a prize for the awards ceremony at the terminus marketing assistance - getting the word out to pilots and local aviation organizations

We always have a great time with this event! Please contact Terry Fiala at [email protected] or 650-307-2304 to contribute your time and expertise.

Congratulations to the Colorado Chapter mem-bers who competed in the 2017 Air Race Classic. Lydia Baldwin finished 4th!!! She and her mother, Caroline Baldwin, are veteran racers flying their Cherokee 180 as Team 29 “Baldwin Family Fly-ers”. With a tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico disrupting the normal wind patterns in the Mid-west, Lydia and Caroline did a magnificent job of identifying when tailwinds were likely (rather than the headwinds most teams found). This is the second year in a row in the Top Ten for this moth-er/daughter team – way to go!

Gretchen Jahn and Jan McKenzie, Team 3 “Misplaced Mooney Girls”, finished 18th out of 52 teams who started the race. The team collected three leg prizes, including first place and fastest team on the leg from Bemidji, MN to Spencer, IA. While Gretchen has raced many times, this was Jan’s first race and she had a great time. They

plan to be back next year – with the goal of a first place finish …

For the third year in a row the Air Race Classic website showed each team on the race route map as they flew each leg of the race. It was mesmerizing to watch each race number inch along the route – or in some cases veer off the direct route to go around weather. Every night there were postings of which teams stayed overnight at which race stop. To enter next year – or watch the race – go to the Air Race Classic website www.airraceclassic.org for more information.

Come to Steamboat, CO on September 2 for the Annual Steamboat Wild West Air Fest. The Colorado 99s Chapter will have a "booth" (actually, probably just the wing of an airplane) to display and hand out in-formation about our chapter and the 99s. Stephanie Wells will be flying her plane there, and would love to have company! Here is information about the event.

Five airplanes made the flyout to Pueblo for breakfast in July. Pete's Landing was where the Chapter con-vened. Pete came out and met us and took our pic-ture. It was a blast!

Members and guests attending were Karlen Krall, Babette Andre, Jan McKenzie, Marty Brophy, Kate Kennedy, Donna Miller, Laura Schulz, Jenny Kauff-man, Romona Stueckrad, Terry Fiala, Gretchen Jahn, Theresa Monroe, Alaina Bravo, Stephanie Wells, June Stewart and Margot Plummer.

Is anyone looking for a flying job? New Mexico may be the place!

This position will work with resource divi-sion biologists and law enforcement oper-ations division to conduct aerial surveys

of wildlife populations to assess population status and to fly special operations documenting illegal activi-ties. This will be accomplished by operating fixed-wing aircraft in a safe manner and maintaining aircraft in airworthy condition. In addition, this position will coor-dinate statewide aerial telemetry and perform winter waterfowl surveys within a required limited time frame to include identification and scheduling of experienced observers and programming/maintaining aerial teleme-try equipment.

Six Delegates from the Colorado Chapter attended the International Conference and Annual Business Meeting in San Antonio, Texas, July 10-16, 2017: Terry Fia-la, Linda Horn, Gretchen Jahn, Jan McKenzie, Donna Miller, and Sue Osborne. They attended the Annual Business Meeting to hear the latest reports from Inter-national and to vote on policy changes. They also participated in several working sessions to share ideas on how better to involve our Chapter members in support of the overall mission. Of particular interest was learning about International's new-est marketing campaigns and social media best practices.

Jan McKenzie, International President and Colorado Chapter member, emceed the Saturday evening awards banquet to close out the conference. The banquet hon-ored scholarship recipients, including Colorado Chapter member Natalie Shemi-gon, who received an Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarship for academics this year.

We would like to acknowledge Chapter members Jan McKenzie and Linda Horn for their outstanding work at the Interna-tional Conference. Jan McKenzie, our International President, worked tirelessly both in advance of and during the confer-ence. She presided over many effective and efficient meetings as a diplomatic and engaging leader. Linda Horn played many instrumental roles in the conference, including web master, printed program coordinator, and audio-visual specialist. Thank you, Jan and Linda!

In June, I had the opportunity to participate in the 41st Air Race Classic.

Classic Racer #29, a 1973 Piper Cherokee, was our entry in this transcon-tinental competition of 52 women pilot teams. The race route, 2642 statute miles, took us from Frederick, Maryland west and North to Bemidji, Minne-sota, and then south and then west again to the terminus at Santa Fe, New Mexico. Our fellow pilot racers were aged 18 to 88, career professional pilots, college students, engineers, commercial pilots, professors, techni-cians, retirees, business owners and operators, consultants, dietitians, vet-erinarians, designers, teachers, community service and law enforcement professionals, scientists, artists and writers. My partner is my mother, Car-oline. I was inspired to earn my pilot certificate by my mother. This was

our 8th

race together. During the previous five races our team was also comprised of my niece, Caroline’s grand-daughter. Flying the Air Race Classic creates an adventure that we enjoy together, along with about 100 additional aviatrix friends. Many racers have participated in previous events and we enjoy seeing our ARC pilot acquaintances each year as we convene for another ten days of excitement, camaraderie, challenge and thrill. For new racers we encourage and support our fellow pilots in ‘navigating’ the race activities, and we celebrate accomplishments with them.

The race is a VFR event, and we fly during daytime hours only. At the start, planes take off in race number order; lat-er on the teams spread out and sometimes we travel in different packs along the way. We are timed crossing a desig-nated line at each stop. Hundreds of fantastic volunteers along the way welcomed us with friendly words, refresh-ments and cool water! Each plane completed a handicapping flight in the spring, and the competition involves besting ground speeds above the handicapping speed by the greatest margin. So what is the strategy? Team pilots decide when to fly, and within the FARs, also at what altitude/where to fly. Also, we maximize performance of the aircraft with weight and balance, and fuel management. This year much of the course presented us with headwinds (initially!). The first two legs, in a mostly west direction were slow and into the wind. We expected more of the same for the du-ration. To our good fortune, after a front went through, later on the winds shifted and headed west again on the last two legs we had some strong tailwinds. That was a wonderful turn of events and contributed to our 4

th place finish.

We were patient, persevered and maintained a focus on safety. I landed at new airports, and in new states. From Frederick, Maryland, where the ground elevation is at 300’, to Santa Fe, New Mexico where the ground elevation is 6300’ (and the density altitude was >9000’). We crossed rivers, plains, lakes, farms and ranches. Our route took us around Minneapolis class B airspace, near several smaller cities as well as across the more barren North Texas and Eastern New Mexico. Flying across the land is magnificent!

I race to challenge myself to excel, to think about opportunities and potential for success. I race because those who did so before me raced with grace, skill and poise, and I admire their achievements.
