Last weekend, five members from Waccamaw High School’s Student Council, as well as the Council advisor, Mrs. Humowitz, traveled to Riverside High School for the annual South Carolina Association of Student Council’s State Conven-tion. The group included sophomore representative Emily Countess, junior representative Sara Ness, Senior Class President Lora Eddy, Corresponding Secretary Tess Humowitz, and Student Body President Berkley Lane. Tess Humowitz served as the SCASC District 2 Vice-Chair for the 2015-2016 school year. The WHS delegates traveled to Greenville, SC last Friday, excited for a leadership-filled weekend! Student Councils from across South Carolina came to Riverside to make friends and learn more about effective leadership. The theme for the convention was centered on Woodstock: “Peace, Love, and Leadership!” Saturday evening, the awards ceremony and banquet took place. During the banquet, awards are given to SCASC schools who show excellence in the planning and execution of school and community events. Member schools submit three projects in categories such as fundraising, school spirit, and community service. They also turn in an extensive record of all events planned known as the Honor Council Form. Lastly, member schools are encouraged to create a themed scrapbook to showcase all events from the previous year. For the past 11 years, Waccamaw has been awarded the title of “1A/2A Student Council of the Year” due to the impressive and extensive scrapbook submitted. This year, Waccamaw turned in projects in the areas of community service, school service, and fundraising. The theme of the WHS scrapbook was “The Stations of Leadership,” inspired by
Pandora.
Waccamaw took home first place in all three project cate-gories, as well as the Gold Honor Council title. For the12th consecutive year, the Warriors were named the 1A/2A Student Council of the Year. Berkley Lane was inducted into the Terry McCoy Leader-ship Hall of Fame and Tess Humowitz was elected the District 2 Vice-Chair for the upcoming school year. Overall, the Warrior leaders had a successful and fun-filled weekend. Without the leadership of Mrs. Humowitz, the success of the WHS Student Council would not be possible. Student Council also wants to thank Historian, senior Peyton Johnson, for all of her hard work in creating the beautiful scrapbook. A great weekend for Waccamaw Student Council to
grow in leadership and make life-long friends. Congrats, Warriors! We are Waccamaw!

On Thursday, March 10th, the Choral Boosters sponsored
the 2016 Waccamaw’s Got Talent show, which was directed
by Mrs. Warr. Mr. Kevin Jayroe was the emcee of the night,
bringing his classic energy and pizazz to the show. The
evening started off with Elody Bensch singing “Feelin’ Good”
by A. Newley and Leslie Bricusse, followed by Jasmine
Stafford singing “I’m Not the Only One” by Sam Smith. Pianist
Drew Hogan presented his composition of “Spring Sonata.”
Maddy Elliott sang “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again”
and Sydney Windham sang “Til’ I Hear You Sing.” Both songs
were written by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Ian Sovine sang “Been
A Son” by Kurt Cobain while playing his guitar and WHS staff
member Alan Pritchard performed his original song of “Rope
and Twine” on his guitar. Ian T. Kelly presented his animated
short film “Thief.” Two original raps were performed at the
Talent Show by Joshua Stafford with “Won’t Believe it” and
Jed Parreno with “Dumplings.” In a saxophone performance,
Hunter Cline played “Moondance” by Van Morrison, and on his
electric guitar was Jack Sanders doing a guitar improvisation.
The Sophomore Sweeties (Bensch on guitar and Elliott on
drums) performed “Do I Wanna Know” by Arctic Monkeys.
Thomas Hodge accompanied Taylor Cox on piano as she
sang, “To Make You Feel My Love” by Bob Dylan, arranged by
Adele. Singing “Mercy” by Duffy was Kaitlyn Harrison and
singing “Skinny Love” by Bon Iver was Andrea Salas-Plaza.
Finishing up the night was a Pawleys Island Community
Feature band 3 Nails. This trio, Bensch and her two younger
sisters, performed “Allstar” by Smash Mouth. Congratulations
to all who performed in the 2016 talent show. Waccamaw
definitely has talent!

Warriors at Lake Norman Article and pictures by Mr. Michael Benton
The Warriors Competitive Sailing Team traveled to Lake Norman last weekend, March 12th and 13th. There were 20 teams there from four states to compete. One of the teams traveled from St. Petersburg, Florida. The winds were extremely light on Saturday with the sailors only having one race for the day. To take up some time, our Warriors played cards and ping pong to pass the day. Sunday morning brought very light breezes, but the sailors were able to complete nine races. The “A” Fleet, consisting of Noah Benton and Victoria Marinoff, had a total of 63 points for the weekend. The “B” Fleet, with Noah Giltmier and Anna Sandor, had a total of 58 points. The combined points for the Warriors ended up at 121 for the weekend with the team finishing in 14th place.
The Warriors are going to Lake Jordan, outside of Raleigh, this weekend to compete in the last points regatta for the season.

Last weekend, March 11th-13th, Will Canipe,
Chris Kaylor, Trey Salley, Jackson Cole, and
Patrick Golden of the Waccamaw varsity golf
team competed in The Members Club Junior
Invitational on the Wildewood course in
Columbia, S.C. The Warriors played against a
field of 26 teams. Over the three-day tourna-
ment, Waccamaw finished the Invitational tied
for 2nd place with Boiling Springs and three
shots shy of the 1st place team Cannon High
School. Junior Patrick Golden and Boiling
Springs golfer Trent Phillips tied for 1st place in
individual scores turning in a scorecard
6-under par on a 72-par course. Golden then
birdied the first playoff hole to capture the
individual title. Congratulations to the team
and to Golden for an outstanding showing in your first tournament of the season.
Individual scores for each day: Golden (69, 71, 70); Canipe (76, 76, 78); Kaylor
(78, 79, 77); Salley (75, 86, 80); Cole (84, 81, 80).

On Monday, March 14th, the varsity girls lacrosse
team played against the St. James Sharks at St.
James High. During the first half, the Lady Warriors
had trouble keeping the ball away from the goal and
getting ground balls. The Sharks led at the end of the
first half with a score of Sharks-7 and Waccamaw-3
with goals made by Sophia Flory, Sassy Tolson, and
May May Henry. During the second half, the Lady
Warriors brought their “A-game” and played with all
they had. The offense had great communication,
shouting out calls they made during practice deriving
four goals, two made by Tolson, one by Flory, and
one by Lillian Hardee, her first goal of the season.
Sadly, Waccamaw lost with the final score of 14-7.
On Tuesday, March 15th, the girls traveled up to
Columbia to play the Ridgeview Blazers. The girls
played hard during both halves, leading to a victory
and the second win of the season. The final score
was 17-10. Goals were made by Flory (3 goals),
Henry (2 goals), Tolson (3 goals), Celie Anderson
(1 goal), Maddy Middleton (1 goal), and Lora Eddy
(7 goals).

The team competed the following Saturday, March 12th, at the annual Outback Invitational, held in Summerville. Over twenty schools were represented at the meet, and Waccamaw finished 7th for girls and 9th for boys. To start off the day’s wins, Arnold captured the bronze in the 100m hurdles and the silver in the 400m. Junkins had a good day, finishing first in the 400m dash, and third in the 200m. Amelia Jones finished third in the 1600m, and first in the 3200m, and DeSpain won the bronze in the 800m. A school record was broken for the 3200m by MacLeod, formerly held by Robert Jones. Awesome job everyone!
On Tuesday, Waccamaw hosted a meet against Carolina Forest. Both the girls and boys teams pulled out a win, with scores of 113-43 and 86-63. It was a big day for both track and field, with winners in each. First up in field, Ava Markham grabbed the gold in high jump, Jamisa Lewis in shot put, and Jackson Junkins in pole vault. The girls track team captured several first place finishes in relays with the 4x100m, 4x800m, and 4x400m, all getting the gold. Go Warriors! The boys also pulled out big points for Waccamaw with relay team winners in the 4x800m and the 4x400m. For individuals, wins were taken by Aubrey Gauthier in the 100m and 400m hurdles, Jackson Junkins in the 100m, 400m, and 200m, William Daniels in the 1600m, and both Matt MacLeod and Perrin Jones with a tie in the 3200m. Boys Tennis Serves Up the Wins Article by Karina Kostova, pictures courtesy of Waccamaw Athletic Booster Facebook page
The Boys’ Tennis Team has been having a great season so far and a busy one. Over the
past week, the tennis team played six matches. On Wednesday, March 9th, the team
endeared an intense match against Myrtle Beach, winning with an overall team score of 4-3.
Paul Hendrix joined the boys and played #1 singles winning 6-0, 6-0. Ben Hewes played at
#2 winning 6-2, 6-4. Spencer Kemp, Stephen Russell, and J.D. Tucker played singles as
well but lost to their opponents. At #1 doubles, Hendrix and Hewes won with an overpower-
ing score of 6-1, 6-1. Number 2 doubles, Harry Kemp and Will Tiller, had a difficult game but
were able to beat their opponents 6-4, 7-5. On Thursday, March 10th, the tennis team

Varsity Softball By Lyric Wigfall
On Thursday, March 10th, the Lady Warriors varsity
softball team played St. James. The Lady Warriors put up a
hard fight, but couldn’t keep up against the Sharks. St. James
took the win. Kinley Cooper went 2 for 3 and Isabel Sanchez,
Logan Howard, Jordan McNair, and Hunter Prior all had one hit
each.
On Wednesday, March 15th, the Lady Warriors played their first
region game of the season against Dillon. It was another tough
night for the team scoring only two runs and ultimately taking a
loss. Sanchez drove in both runs with an RBI single followed by
a double by Howard.
The Lady Warriors played its first home game last night against
Timberland but the results were not available at press time.
Boys and Girls Varsity
Soccer By Sophia Flory
The girls and boys varsity soccer team played Loris on Thursday, March 10th.
The Lady Warriors beat the Lions 8-0. Goals were scored by Lawson
Murphy, Jessica Preedom, and Anna Hansen. Sarah Allston scored two
goals and Hayden Kelly got a hat trick. Our boys’ varsity team brought home
a win defeating the Lions 6-0. Goals for the Warriors were scored by Chris
Crosby, Maddox Wilkinson, Mason Preedom, Anderson Clemons, and
Pearce Dechamplain. Go Warriors!
On Saturday, March 12th, the Lady Warriors played Bishop England at home.
Our girls put up a good fight but were beat by the Bishops 5-0. The boys’
team played North Myrtle Beach on Monday, March 14th, at home. The
Warriors were scored on early in the half and could not seem to find the back
of the net. The final score ended with the Chiefs winning 1-0.
The girls and boys varsity teams played Aynor last night, but the results were
not available at press time.
Warrior Baseball
Making a Start By Alex Altman
On March 8th, our
Waccamaw Warriors
varsity baseball team
batted against Andrews
High. Even though the
game was held at Andrews, the bleachers
were filled to the max with enthusiastic
Warrior fans. The Warriors started this game
rough by committing three errors, but they
didn’t let that keep them down. Putting their
mistakes behind them, WHS would produce
7 hits that drove in 14 runs to put them on
top. Coach Gregory says, “hits are conta-
gious,” and that night, they were. The big
sluggers of the night were Connor Eckard
who went 1-2 and scored two runs, Levi
Almond who went 1-3 with an assist by Alex
Altman to run for him, and Forrest Powell
who went 1-4 and scored two runs. Carter
Fox would back up the bats by shutting
Andrew’s bats down with six strikeouts.
Waccamaw came out of this game with the
dub and a final score of 14-4. Great job
Warriors!
This past weekend, March 11th-12th, our
varsity baseball team took a road trip to USC
in Columbia. They played two games while
there, one against Brooklyn Cayce, and the
other against Pelion. The games were
played Saturday morning in the hot Columbia
weather. Brooklyn Cayce was the first game
of the day and turned out be very intense.
The Warriors came out strong by putting up
four runs early. Powell was the leading hitter
by going 2-4 with one RBI and one run. The
Warriors took their foot off the gas in the 4th
inning, which gave Brooklyn Cayce a chance
to come back. The bed bugs must have kept
Waccamaw’s defense up all night because
they produced seven errors, which Brooklyn
Cayce took advantage of. They drove in four
runs to tie up the game to 4-4. Junior Karl
Strittmatter did a phenomenal job on the
mound by committing 10 strikeouts and only
giving up two hits. With an awesome job
done by Strittmatter, Miller Brinson walked
up to the mound to finish Brooklyn Cayce off.
However, sometimes, everything doesn’t go
as planned. Brooklyn Cayce got a runner on
second base and drove him in to win the
game. The final score was 5-4 Brooklyn
Cayce. Even though Waccamaw didn’t get
the win, they still played hard.
The game at Pelion was a horse of a
different color; the Warriors came out strong
and stayed that way the whole game.
Waccamaw started to make moves in the
second inning by driving in run after run, and
having a lot of energy on defense to back
their bats up. The top sluggers of the game
were Eckard who went 2-3 with two runs,
Almond who went 2-4 with one run, Jaret
Montenery who went 2-2 with one run and
one RBI, and Daniel Rourke who went 2-3
with two runs and one RBI. Powell took the
mound in the 1st inning and shut Pelions
offense down complete by only allowing one
run. They battled early and got off the field in
the 5th inning due to the ten-run rule. This
was a weekend to get stronger as a player
and as a team. Great job this weekend
Warriors and keep it up.
Waccamaw started their region off right this
past Tuesday against Dillon. On March 16th,
the Warriors traveled to Dillon to play a 6:30
game. With some bus difficulties on the way,
our Warriors got to the field at exactly 6:30.
Only 5 minutes to stretch and warm up the
arms, Waccamaw stepped up to the plate
and stunned Dillon's defense. Our Warriors
runs came in early with two runs in the first
inning by Eckard and one run in the second
inning by McKinley Grooms. Almond had a
solid game by going 2-4 with a double. Dillon
was able to drive a run in in the 5th inning,
but after that they ran out of luck. Fox would
pitch all seven innings and shocked the
pitching coaches going in clutch when need-
ed and never giving up. Waccamaw secured
the win with a final score of 3-1. It was a
great game played all-around just doing the
fundamentals. Keep up the progress,
Warriors.
