Our school community celebrates and embraces our diversity. Our staff strives to teach understanding and respect of each culture represented on our campus. Each day our students learn about acceptance and inclusion. At C. L. Smith we believe our differences bring us together. Each month, we plan to focus on a culture that is represented by families and students of C.L. Smith Elementary in each of our classrooms, including our library. In February, students will be learning about Chinese culture. We will be identifying resources to support students in gaining knowledge, incorporating information to be shared at our monthly Superstar Assembly, and participating in activities during our Fun Friday to represent the Chinese culture. Please celebrate the Chinese New Year with us by reading this attachment with your children. It is our goal to have students accept others and embrace each other's differences. I’m excited to share that our staff is creating an amazing STEAM program that we will be implementing during the 3rd Trimester for grades 3-6. We will look to expand and incorporate this model during the 2019-2020 school year for each trimester, so all grade level students will have the opportunity to learn about three STEAM topics of interest throughout the year. We have selected five Fridays, where the last 40 mins of each day, students will attend an enrichment course of their choice in order to investigate, analyze, and create within topics spanning from Spanish to woodworking. Each staff member has chosen a area of expertise or interest that they will provide our students with a hands-on opportunity to expand their learning and perhaps develop a new passion for future study. Please look for our STEAM brochure that will be coming home in the next week! Our entire staff is excited to present this opportunity for our students and look to expand and continue the program for years to come. We also welcome volunteers to help. As you look through the brochure, if you see a program that interests you please contact the office or contact the teacher directly. It takes a village to raise a child. Let’s work together to give our children the best opportunities we can. We will be discussing our STEAM program at this month's Coffee with the Principal, Monday, Feb. 4th at 9:30 am on campus.

Chinese New Year Chinese New Year is an incredibly festive time of year for family to gather together to ring in the new year. There are many meaningful traditions and there is some variation in the traditions among different families, villages and regions but all activities are focused on celebration and making room for the new year. Chinese New Year is the first day of the Spring Festival which is a time of welcoming Spring! There is no set date for the Chinese New Year as it follows the lunar calendar. Every year the holiday lands on a different day between the months of January and

February. This year the festivities run from February 5th to the 19th. Some of these festivities include lighting off an abundance of fireworks to ward off bad luck. Many families clean the house in order to sweep away last year's fortune to make way for the good fortune of the new year. The Dragon Dance is also believed to bring good luck to the people. Everyone wears the color red which symbolizes good fortune. Food is also a very important part of the Chinese New Year and different dishes signify different wishes for the new year. Noodles for longevity; dumplings for wealth and good fortune and fish for prosperity, just to name a few. Families usually all gather together and visit with one another. It is also a time to be thankful for elders and also celebrate ancestors. Gifts of red envelopes called “Red Pockets” are given to children filled with money from elders as it is thought to be a means of transferring fortune. Every Chinese New Year there is a new Zodiac animal and this year is the year of the pig. Ending the 15 day festival on the first full moon of the lunar year they have what is called the Lantern Festival. This festival is a night of celebration and freedom that is filled with lanterns lighting up the sky. It is considered the Valentine's day for Chinese culture as young people from everywhere send their hopes and dreams up to the sky with their lanterns. Gong Xi Fa Cai!! Happy Chinese New Year!!
