‘Radiation Racing’ around SydneyF1 in Schools is an International Competition where students design, engineer and manufacture a Formula 1 style racing car on a scale of about 1:23. Four of our students recently went to Sydney to participate in the competition, as “Radiation Racing”.
T he first week of term saw four students head to Sydney to partici-
pate in the New South Wales State Final for F1 in Schools. They were Isaac Dooley, Nathan Mancer, Tye Naden and henry Thompson and their team was Radiation Racing.
The students had to design the car by studying aerody-namics, computer drawing, 3D modelling and manufactur-ing programs. They also had to market their team, seeking sponsorship from local busi-nesses, designing their team uniform and logo. For the com-petition they had to design a portfolio and pit display, con-duct a presentation, undergo scrutinizing of their car and present their design to engi-neers. The cars ran in three race categories; Automatic start, Reaction Time Start and Knockout. The cars reach about
80 km/h and race down the track at between 1.010 and 2.000 seconds. Timing is to the thousandth of a second. There were 25 teams at the competition in various classes. Radiation Racing competed in the Professional Senior Class, with their car being the 3rd
fastest before penalties. The team enjoyed the experience and look forward to assisting next year’s teams. They would also like to thank their spon-sors and their parents for their support.

T he hSC has started, with Year 12 now having com-pleted their first examina-tions. Whilst there were
some nerves on the first morning, Year 12 on the whole were confident and positive about the task that lies ahead. Up to 180 students accessed the tutorial sessions that were offered in the library every school day of the holidays. The tutorials covered all faculties and were organised by the Learning Centre. A huge thankyou to Michelle and all the staff who gave up holiday time to provide this opportu-nity for our students.
even though last term is a distant memory for Year 12 I must pay trib-ute to the way Year 12 finished their schooling years. The students fin-ished school with dignity and respect whilst embracing the occasion with that unique sense of fun that they possess. The Year 12 Presentation Ceremony was a wonderful occasion which bought together a wide range of Dubbo society. The 850+ people who attended had the opportunity to celebrate the many successes of this talented group of young people. A huge thank you to Kerrie Walters, Andrew Slater and all the staff who helped make that week special for Year 12.
The Year 12 Presentation Ceremony was the first official engagement for the new school captains for 2014. The prefect elections has seen a group of young people selected to represent
Dubbo College Senior Campus and Public education, a task I believe these young people will do with great distinction. The depth of the field that were put forward to be school leaders reflects the calibre of young people we have at Senior Campus.
The successful candidates for 2014 are:
Captains: Lachlan van Dartel & Phoebe hall
Vice Captains: Jake Whitney & Melissa McDonald
Art Captains: Nathan Bryon & Alyssa Lambert
Sports Captains: Benjamin Patterson & Taylah Gray
Congratulations to all involved and particularly to our new leadership group. I look forward to working with them.
Whilst Year 12 2013 commences their hSC examinations Year 12 2014 commence their hSC course work. As such this is a very important term for them, as they undertake course work and assessments which will lead directly to their hSC. Just as we wish the cohort of 2013 all the best in their examinations we also look forward to seeing what our new Year 12 will achieve over the next 12 months.

DEPUTY’S REPORT
As the HSC has begun with all students sitting the english exami-nation on Monday, october 14. we would like to wish all students the best.
Y eAR 12 students arrived at school for their first examination to achieve their best and appeared
well prepared. I anticipate that these students have spent two to five hours per day ignoring the distractions of electronic devic-es like mobile phones and TV, to apply themselves in search of sound results. They have worked hard to reap the benefits of the long term work applied throughout their school life, and we all wish each and every student every success in achieving their best over the com-
ing weeks of examinations.
The Year 12 final assembly was inspirational to the current Year 11 students, who I am sure will take the advice of making a deadline and working towards it. As current students sit the hSC, some advice for exam preparation for next year’s students includes learning to turn off mobile phones and social media, study where there are few distrac-tions, study with buddies to share notes and discuss ideas, welcome ongoing support from teachers, attend tutorial sessions, plan for the weeks ahead, take rest breaks, write summary notes (and closer
to the examination make summary notes of the summary), complete lots of practice papers, have memo-ry triggers, check how many marks have been allocated to each part of an exam question, and most impor-tantly, keep things in perspective.
The photographs taken at the Year 12 final assembly help to depict the important relationships staff and students have all created, and things learnt that will flow into career options within the future chapters of student’s lives. Thank you to Miss Claudia Watts who presented the occasional address, the 2013 school captains Samuel Wells and Zoe Basham, and to the staff and Year Advisors Ms Kerrie Walters and Mr Andrew Slater for a great Year 12 Assembly. Thank you to all of the contributors and special guests, parents, carers and students for sharing each Year 12 student’s final assembly moments.

InteRvIeWS
CAReeRS have been busy conduct-ing subject changes and holding interviews with the new Year 12 students. It is important that stu-dents make time to have an inter-view with a careers advisor, so that students can indicate potential career area interests. This helps the careers team to provide relevant career and work experience oppor-tunities to students. Interviews can be made anytime, except for recess.

lego RobotICS
MR SeTTRee and Mr Miller have kicked off a venture with the “Bridges to Learning” group in week 2. This oppor-tunity presents students with a chance to develop skills in engineering and program-ming using advanced NXT LeGO robotics kits.
The “Bridges to Learning” group is a collaboration of universities in Australia who are looking to foster an inter-est in remote sensing and engineering among students around the country.
This technology is used in exploration through space (including on Mars), and closer to home in our oceans and below the earth’s sur-face. Our students have been supplied with kits for the term and on Friday, October 18, had a video link-up with the group in Sydney for some expert instruction.
We’re very fortunate and very grateful for this special opportunity.
