Dear Graduate and Professional Students,

As we enter the month of February, you are likely

deeply engaged in your academic work, anticipating

mid-term exams to be given or taken and looking

forward to a brief respite during the spring break in

early March.

According to Wikipedia, February was named after

the Latin term februum, which means purification, via

the purification ritual Februa held on February 15

(full moon) in the old lunar Roman calendar.

January and February were the last two months to

be added to the Roman calendar, since the Romans

originally considered winter a monthless

period. 2012 is also a Leap Year. February 29 is a

date that usually occurs every four years, and is

called leap day. This day is added to the calendar in

leap years as a corrective measure, because the

earth does not orbit around the sun in precisely

365 days. Many of you may remember the short

poem developed to help all school children to

remember the months of the year:

Thirty days hath September,

April, June and November;

All the rest have thirty-one

Save February, she alone

Hath eight days and a score

Til leap year gives her one day more.

I hope you are able to enjoy the extra day this

month. Please see links in the newsletter for

University events and programs related to February

such as Black History Month.

All the best,

February 22, 2012 is the priority deadline for graduate students (who will be enrolled at least

half-time in classes this summer) to apply for summer federal financial aid, such as a Federal

Direct Stafford Loan. The application process includes sending a completed and signed 2012-

2013 Graduate Financial Aid Application/Validation form to the Boston College Financial Aid

Processing Center in Randolph, MA as well as completing a 2012-2013 FAFSA online at

www.fafsa.ed.gov.

NEW! Beginning February 1, 2012, students and parents who have filed their 2011 IRS tax

return will be able to select the IRS Data Retrieval option on the Free Application for

Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to transfer tax information to the FAFSA. We strongly

encourage you to select this option during the initial filing or when subsequent corrections are

made to your 2012-2013 FAFSA. This option will streamline and expedite the process-

ing of your financial aid application. For more information, visit the IRS Data Retrieval

Tool web page.

Attention Graduate Students: This process applies to you only if

you are applying for federal financial aid.
