Presidents Message By: Madison Schultz
October 7, 2019
Hello ASHRAEcok Family! I am super excited to serve as your President this year! My goal for the year is to Empower Members. We are lucky to have so many wonderful volunteers helping this year so this year will be jampacked with events; I hope to see you at many of them. I have two big shout-outs this month: First, I want to thank Andy Donahue, Chris Dolan, and Ross Myles for their hard work planning the Annual Golf Tournament last month. This was the first year that our long-time Special Events chair, Bryan Garcia, handed over the reins to a new leader. Transitions have the potential to be rough, but, of course, that was not the case here. Andy did a fantastic job leading the charge and Chris, the Research Promotions (RP) Chair and Ross, the Special Events and RP Co-Chairs, rounded out the wonderful team. Thank you! Second, I want to thank Jon Wilmore and Heather Martin for their hard work planning this year’s technical sessions. Jon is the Chapter Technology Transfer Committee (CTTC) Chair and Heather is one of the Co-Chairs. They poured over your responses to the survey I sent out this past spring to bring members the topics that you requested. I have also assigned them some additional lofty goals that they are working very hard to attain. A big shout out to them for doing such a fantastic job. Thank you! I’m looking forward to the YEA event this month. Gavin is taking advantage of the fall weather and planning a disc golf event! The ASHRAEcok YEA Committee has hosted disc golf events twice in the past and they are typically well attended and a lot of fun! Keep your eyes peeled for the invitation. I am very excited to see all of you at our Chapter Meeting this month. I am pleased to welcome our featured speaker, Jennifer Lickteig. Ms. Lickteig is the CEO of Capital Funding and President of TBS, LLC in Oklahoma City. She is also a Fellow in the Society of American Military Engineers and avid volunteer in the community. She has decades of experience in the commercial and government construction sectors so is eminently qualified to address her topic of Construction and Law. As a reminder, our new location is Will Rogers Theater at 4322 N Western Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73118. The chapter needs someone to Chair the Diversity in ASHRAE (formerly Women in ASHRAE) Committee. If you are interested in chairing, please let me know. All of the committee chairs are hard at work planning spectacular events for the year. Please reach out if you want to get engaged with all they are doing or if you have an idea for an event or activity that will empower members. Madison

Student Activities Events
By: Robert Smith and Don Carter
This year we started our Student Activities year at the MetroTech STEM Expo on September 20, 2019. Gavin Swenson and Robert Smith participated in five separate sessions with high school students. The main focus was informing the young students about ASHRAE as well as the HVAC industry. We are scheduled on October 29, 2019 from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM to meet with our Student Chapter at The University of Oklahoma. We are looking forward to a great successful meeting. If you are a current Student Member and are interested in learning more about the operation side of ASHRAE, or a Student Branch Advisor and know of a Student Member that would be interested, please let Robert or Scott know. If you are involved in different activities either at the K-12 level, or the post high school level, please let us know, so we can list the activity in our newsletter and receive PAOE points. If you are involved in an activity and need volunteers, please let us know so we can help you get the word out for volunteers. Robert Smith, [email protected] Don Carter, [email protected]

YEA Disc Golf By: Gavin Swenson
My name is Gavin Swenson, and I’m excited to be this year’s YEA (Young Engineers in ASHRAE) committee chair.
The goal of YEA is to get younger ASHRAE members familiar with ASHRAE and the industry by way of social events, technical tours, classes, and mentorship programs. We’ll have monthly events that I encourage all young
members to join us for. Keep an eye on your inbox and you’ll see the invitations as they roll out!
We’ll kick our YEA year off with an event this October. More details to come, but I hope everyone can join us for a
round of disc golf at Will Rogers followed by a happy hour at Ingrid’s. Be on the lookout for that invitation.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at [email protected]

Historian Message
Sou’Wester Newsletter By: Dusty Stoabs ASRE Merging with ASHAE
Although air conditioning involves refrigeration equipment, the “R” in ASHRAE normally refers
to systems operating at temperatures colder than that normally used for air conditioning. These types of systems are used for food preparation and storage, pharmaceutical, chemical and
petroleum processes, laboratory environmental chambers, and various industrial uses.
When the American Society of Refrigerating Engineers (ASRE) merged with the American Society of Heating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHAE) in 1959, there was a considerable
amount of grumbling on the part of many members of ASRE. It was felt by many that the interests of the refrigeration
engineer would be secondary to those of the combined societies. Before the merger, those who were members of
ASRE even received letters from concerned members requesting that they vote against the merger. But the majority of the members of each Society, having faith in their officers’ ability to decide what was best for all concerned, end up
voting in favor of the merger.
After the merger, nationally, many refrigeration engineers did, in fact, fall away and stop attending. There were many possible reasons for this such as a lack of refrigeration topics included in the Society publications, lack of programs on
refrigeration at Chapter and Society meetings, and lack of refrigeration engineers in leadership roles at the top level of
ASHRAE. ASHRAE tried to address this problem by creating an “R in ASHRAE Committee” in 1969. Its members were active in formulating plans to increase the recognition of, and interest in, refrigeration disciplines; thereby
attracting manpower for training, and refrigeration-oriented engineers into active participation in the industry.
ASHRAE took a two-pronged approach to maximize its ability to develop refrigeration engineering solutions to meet
the world’s demands: 1) Each ASHRAE Society leader was tasked to further develop every discipline, not just the ones they are most familiar with, and 2) ASHRAE Chapters members were tasked to continuously review and comment
on the content of the handbooks produced by the Society.

Membership Promotion 2019-2020 MP Outlook By: Tanner Jones
My name is Tanner Jones and I am the MP (Membership Promotion) committee chair for the 2019-2020
ASHRAE year. The purpose of MP is to encourage the men and women in the HVAC industry to be
involved in ASHRAE because of the many educational, personal and industry benefits it has to offer.
ASHRAE offers education about new technologies, updates in standards and how to apply them,
networking opportunities and much more. We are excited to meet the new members of the ASHRAE Central OK chapter!
This year we will be teaming up with YEA and Student Activites to help newer members and students
interested in this industry to be aware of the opportunities available to them within ASHRAE. Be on the
look out for these joint efforts as we move to increase our membership and retain delinquent members.
I am excited to announce this year that we have multiple members that are apart of the MP committee and one that is co-chair for
MP. Below are their names. Please do not hesitate to contact these individuals or myself for any questions regarding MP.

Honors & Awards Flow Chart
By: Tino Mendez
The Society Honors and Awards Committee has developed a flow chart that makes it
easier to determine whether an individual Member could be qualified for a Society
Award. Look it over and see if it brings to mind the name of a Member that could
qualify. You could go to the ASHRAE Society website and download the appropriate
forms, fill them out and submit them or you can just let me know and I will take care of the paperwork.
The flow chart and Mendez can be reached at 405-590-4479 or [email protected]

Sustainability / Community Service Projects By: Craig Yadon
Project #1. OKC Boathouse Trash Cleanup The Central Oklahoma ASHRAE Chapter will continue to assist the OKC Boathouse District with cleanup of the north shore of the Oklahoma River. Over the last several years we have picked up numerous sacks of trash and debris which makes a huge
impact on how the public views this beautiful OKC resource. We have not yet set the date but it I promise it will be soon and not after the snow hits the ground.
Project #2. Rebuilding Together In the spring we will be partner up with Rebuilding Together which is a local organization that “brings volunteers and communities together, improving the homes and lives of senior homeowners here in the Oklahoma City metro area.” Since 1992, Rebuilding Together OKC has repaired over 3,100 homes, 35 non-profit facilities, and 8 public school buildings with the help of 70,000 volunteers. Total value to the community has been more than $20 million.
Project #3. Habitat for Humanity We are exploring another opportunity in the spring with Habitat for Humanity. We will assist in either new home construction for a deserving homeowner or provide critical home repairs (CHR) for low income home owners that struggle to maintain their homes due to limitations related to income, age, disability or other circumstances. If you are interested in helping with one or all of these opportunities or if you have any questions, please contact Craig Yadon ([email protected]). Calendar invites and any additional information required will be sent to all current ASHRAE members prior to the event.
