NEW WEEK, NEW SERIES: The Dodgers will continue their season-
long tying 10-game homestand (3-4), as they welcome the Pittsburgh
Pirates for a three-game matchup beginning tonight. Following
yesterday’s victory, Los Angeles avoided being swept by their NL West
rivals, the Colorado Rockies, as they took the series finale yesterday
with a 6-4 to improve to 3-4 on the homestand. The club has been
victorious in 28 of its last 41 contests since May 17 and has posted an
18-9 (.667) record since the beginning of June, which is the best winning
percentage in the NL in that time. Also, with the Diamondbacks loss to
the Giants yesterday, the Dodgers are tied for second in the division with
San Francisco and are now just 2.5 games behind the division leading
Arizona. Following the series and an off day on Thursday, the Boys in
Blue will begin a seven-game road trip to Anaheim (three games) and
San Diego (four games).
The Dodgers faced the Pirates for the first time this season in
early June and took two of the three games at PNC Park. The
Boys in Blue swept the Bucs at Dodger Stadium last season
(May 8-10) and since the beginning of the 2017 campaign, Los
Angeles has won eight of 10 overall games against Pittsburgh.
The Dodgers have also gone 4-1 in their last five games against
the Pirates at the Ravine.
Since starting the season going 8-14 in their first 22 games at
home, the Dodgers improved play significantly at the Ravine
since May 22, winning 15 of their last 24 games.
The Dodgers dropped to 10 games under .500 on May 16 and
since then they have gone 28-13, which is the best record in
the National League over that time and ranks second in the
Majors trailing just the Seattle Mariners’ 30-13 mark. The club
also has one of the best pre-All-Star game records in recent
years for a team that has fallen that far below .500:
Best Pre All-Star Break Record After Getting to 10+
Games Under .500 – Since 2000
2016 Houston Astros 48-41 (.539)
2009 Colorado Rockies 47-41 (.534)
2018 Los Angeles Dodgers 44-39 (.530)

ALEXANDER THE GREAT: Dodger left-hander Alex Wood looks
to continue his series of strong starts as he will make his 17th start of the
season in search of his fifth win of the year. Wood won his third
consecutive start on Wednesday against the Cubs, allowing three runs
(two earned) on seven hits and striking out six without issuing a walk
over 7.0 innings, which was his longest outing since tossing 8.0 innings
on March 30 against the Giants. In his last three starts, he has gone 3-0
and has allowed just five earned runs over 18.2 innings (2.41 ERA),
while punching out 15 against three walks. During that span he has also
limited the opposition to a .239 average, while posting a 1.07 WHIP.
Wood, who will face the Pirates for the first time this season,
has been solid in eight career games (five starts) against
Pittsburgh, going 2-2 with a 2.86 ERA (14 ER/44.0 IP) and has
held hitters to a .226 average. He has also struck out 47 Bucs’
hitters against just nine walks, while posting a 1.05 WHIP.
On the year, the southpaw is 4-5 with a 4.00 ERA (39 ER/87.2
IP) and has struck out 81 batters against 16 walks. The native
of North Carolina has held hitters to a .254 average, while
posting a 1.16 WHIP, which is the 12th lowest in the NL.
Despite all the injuries to the rotation, the Dodger starters have
been solid all year as they currently rank among the National
League’s best in strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.24, 1st ML), walks
per nine innings (2.30, 1st), FIP (3.30, 1st), strikeout per nine
innings (9.73, 1st), WHIP (1.16, 1st), ERA (3.42, 2nd) and
strikeouts (466, 3rd).
BIRTHDAY BOY: The Dodgers would like to wish a very happy 22nd
birthday to left-handed pitcher Caleb Ferguson! Ferguson, who made
his Major League debut early in June, has appeared in five games (three
starts) with the Dodgers this season, going 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA (10
ER/16.2 IP), has struck out 21 batters against seven walks in 16.2
innings and has held batters to a .222 average
VOTE KEMP: Earlier today, Major League Baseball announced its
fourth and final All-Star balloting update for the 89th Midsummer
Classic in Washington, DC and Dodger outfielder Matt Kemp remained
in second place for the most votes among NL outfielders. Kemp
(2,046,534) stayed ahead of Washington’s Bryce Harper (1,777,221)
and is now up by a little more than 250,000 votes, while continuing to
trail just first place Nick Markakis (2,457,648) of the Atlanta Braves.
Kemp is attempting to make his third All-Star team and first since 2012.
In order to vote Kemp, go online and via mobile devices at MLB.com,
all 30 Club sites and the MLB At Bat and MLB Ballpark mobile apps,
until this Thursday, July 5th at 8:59 p.m. (PT).
Kemp got back on track yesterday, as he went 3-for-4 and
drove in four of the five Dodger runs in the win against the
Rockies, including belting his 14th longball of the season with
a go-ahead solo shot in the eighth inning. The veteran
outfielder has posted a .310/.348/.541 slashline with 35 runs,
17 doubles and a team-high 51 RBI in 80 games this season.
He currently ranks sixth in the National League in batting
average and is 10th with a .889 OPS.
Kemp’s .390 batting average (23-for-59) with runners in
scoring position ranks third in the NL and his .367 (40-for-109)
average with runners on base ranks fifth on the Senior Circuit.
Kemp has hit the ball well against the Pirates in his last eight
games, batting .344 (11-for-32) with six runs, two doubles, one
home run and nine RBI along with a .871 OPS. He has also hit
safely in his last six games against Pittsburgh.
DON’T LOOK BACK: The Dodgers this season are 39-12 (.765) when
scoring first, and 5-27 (.156) when allowing the opposing team to score
first. According to Stats LLC., that difference in winning percentage is
on pace to be the largest of any team since 1912:
MLB, Largest Difference in Winning Pct, Scoring First vs. Allowing

2018 Los Angeles Dodgers .765 (39-12) .156 (5-27) +.609

1912 Cleveland Naps .759 (60-19) .203 (15-59) +.556
MAX POWER: Dodger infielder Max Muncy continued to be a force
at the plate, as he reached base safely in all four plate appearances
yesterday, going 2-for-2 with two runs and two walks. Despite playing
in just 61 games this season, Muncy leads the team with 17 home runs
and has slashed .273/.416/.608 with 32 runs, eight doubles and 35 RBI.
According to Stats LLC., overall this season, he’s been one of the best
hitters in the Majors:

BB Rate 1 per 5.14 PA 2nd (Trout, 5.08)

Since June 1, Muncy is also slashing .308 (24-for-78)/.486/.718
with 10 home runs and 16 RBI. His on-base percentage ranks first
in the Majors over that time, and his 10 home runs trails only Paul
Goldschmidt (11) in the National League.

signing day officially starting today, the Dodgers announced the signing
of 16-year-old Venezuelan catcher Diego Cartaya, who was rated by
MLB.com as the No. 1 international prospect for 2018. The club also
