BLUE STREAK: The Dodgers continue their season-long, 10-game
homestand (4-0) with the middle contest of a three-game Interleague
series against the Baltimore Orioles. Los Angeles has won five in a
row, been victorious in seven of its last eight and gone 15-5 in its last
20 games overall to move within 5.0 games of the Giants in the NL
West. Following the businessperson’s special tomorrow afternoon,
the homestand continues with four games against the San Diego
Padres, which will take the Dodgers to the All-Star break.
Los Angeles has won 10 in a row at home and has been
victorious in 18 of its last 21 games at Dodger Stadium since
May 17. The streak is the Dodgers’ longest since a 13-game,
season-opening run from April 13-May 6, 2009.
The Dodgers are a season-high 11 games over .500 and the
five-game winning streak is one shy of their season-best of
six from June 17-22.
The Dodgers’ 2016 Interleague record stands at 5-5.
The Dodgers have taken seven of 10 games with the Orioles
since the advent of Interleague play in 1997 and this is just
Baltimore’s second trip to Los Angeles. Los Angeles took
two of three from Baltimore at Camden Yards in 2002,
swept the O’s at Dodger Stadium in June 2004 and lost two
of three on the road in 2013. Of course, the Orioles and their
crack pitching staff swept the Dodgers in the 1966 World
Series, limiting Los Angeles to just two runs in four games
and firing three consecutive shutouts in games 2-4. (Jim
Palmer, Wally Bunker, Dave McNally).
STILL STREAKING: Corey Seager went 2-for-5 with a triple, a
run scored and an RBI last night as he extended his career-best hitting
streak to 17 games since June 16. Seager’s streak is the longest in the
National League this season and he is batting .414 (29-for-70) with
eight doubles, two triples, two homers and five RBI during the run.
The streak is the longest by a Dodger this year and the longest active
run in the Majors. Seager’s streak is the third longest all-time by a
Los Angeles rookie:
Longest Rookie Hitting Streaks, LA Dodgers Since 1958
1. Tommy Davis 20 (July 30-Aug. 20, 1960)
2. Bill Sudakis 18 (July 31-Aug. 19, 1969)
3. Corey Seager 17 (June 16, 2016-current)
4t. Andre Ethier 16 (July 26-Aug. 12, 2006)
4t. Steve Sax 16 (June 11-27, 1982)
The Major League All-Star starters and reserves will be
announced today at 4:00 p.m. PT on ESPN and Seager is
looking to become just the second Dodger rookie shortstop
to make the squad, joining Billy Grabarkewitz in 1970.
Through just 85 team games, with 17 home runs, Seager
only trails Hanley Ramirez by two (19, 2013) for the Los
Angeles single-season home run record by a shortstop.
On Saturday, Seager was named the National League’s June
Rookie of the Month, after leading Major League rookies in
batting average (.343, 35-for-102), hits, home runs (8), runs
(20), total bases (69) and slugging percentage (.676), while
pacing National League rookies with a .409 on-base
percentage and eight doubles last month.
MAEDA-SAN: Dodger starter Kenta Maeda is set to make his 17th
career start this evening and is still seeking his first Interleague
victory after a no decision in Toronto (May 6) and a loss to the
Angels (May 16). In his last seven starts since May 28, Maeda is 4-
2 with a 2.21 ERA (10 ER/40.2 IP) and has limited the opposition to
a .221 batting average. In eight starts at Dodger Stadium this season,
Maeda is 2-4 with a 3.00 ERA (16 ER/48.0 IP) and the Dodgers are
3-5 in those contests.
Dodger starters rank fifth in the National League with a 3.63
ERA (198 ER/491. IP) and second with 525 strikeouts.
CHASE IS ON THE CASE: Dodger second baseman Chase Utley
went 3-for-5 with a pair of run-scoring singles last night as he
extended his Interleague hitting streak to 13 games since Aug. 22,
2015. In that time, Utley is hitting .352 (19-for-54) against the
American League with four doubles and five RBI. On the year, Utley
is hitting .303 (10-for-33) with 13 RBI with runners in scoring
position and two outs, which leads the Dodgers.
RED IS HOT: Justin Turner drove in the winning run last night
and dating to June 4 is hitting .327 (33-for-101) in his last 27 games
with eight doubles, eight homers and 25 RBI. His slugging
percentage (.644) ranks ninth in the NL in that span.
Since returning from the disabled list on June 21, Yasiel
Puig has hit safely in 11 of 13 games, batting .381 (16-for-
42) with eight runs, two doubles, two homers and six RBI.
During the Dodgers’ current 15-5 run, the team has
combined to hit .300 (42-for-140) with runners in scoring
position. Justin Turner has nine hits in his last 18 at-bats
with runners in scoring position (.500) and, overall, he leads
the Dodgers with a .333 mark (19-for-57) with RISP.
BEST IN SHOW: The Dodger bullpen continues to lead the
National League with a 2.95 ERA (88 ER/268.2 IP), ahead of
Washington’s 3.06 mark. The Dodger ‘pen also ranks among the
Major League leaders in opponents’ batting average (.196, 1st) and
WHIP (1.03, 1st).
Kenley Jansen fired a scoreless ninth inning last night and
has now tossed scoreless relief in 33 of 36 games this season
and ranks among the National League relief leaders in saves
(25, 2nd), WHIP (0.66, 1st), opponents’ batting average
(.153, 3rd) and ERA (1.30, 3rd). This afternoon, Jansen hopes
to be named to the National League All-Star team for the
first time in his seven-year career.
Joe Blanton ranks among the NL relief leaders in WHIP
(0.80, 3rd) and opponents’ batting average (.151, 2nd).
Adam Liberatore worked another scoreless inning last
night and has not allowed a run in his last 22 games (17.0
IP), leaving him just one shy of the Dodger record for most
consecutive scoreless appearances (John Candelaria,
1991). Liberatore has tossed scoreless relief in 35 of 36
games this year and hasn’t allowed a run in 19 home
appearances (17.0 IP). Liberatore leads all Major League
relievers (min. 20.0 IP) with a 0.65 ERA.
HISTORY OF HITS: Dodger first baseman Adrián González
went 0-for-1 with three walks and owns the third-highest batting
average all-time vs. the Baltimore Orioles:
Batting Avg. vs. Baltimore, All-Time, min., 150 PA
1. Miguel Cabrera (2006-16) .382
2. Harry Heilmann (1921-29) .381
3. Adrián González (2005-13) .376 (64-for-170)
4. Ted Williams (1939-60) .374
5. Al Simmons (1925-43) .370
Since being given consecutive days off in Pittsburgh,
González has six RBI in seven games, going 9-for-20 (.450)
with five runs and two doubles.
DOING GLOVEWORK: By defensive efficiency, which measures
turning balls in play into outs, the Dodgers rank second in the Majors,
trailing only the Cubs, with a .715 efficiency rating.
The club’s .988 fielding percentage is tied for second in the
Majors with the Chicago White Sox, trailing only the
Nationals (.990).
