Dear Parents/Guardians:

June is upon us and this marks perhaps our busiest time of

year. We recently held our Scholarship Night which was followed

the next week with our annual Awards Night. The next big event

for our school is our Grade 12 Commencement Ceremony which is

scheduled for June 17th. All of these events require lots of plan-

ning and teamwork on the part of staff to help ensure things run a

smoothly as possible.

June is also the time for year end exams which are scheduled to

take place between June 23rd-29th. As such, our focus at this time

is to ensure all of our students successfully complete their courses

and study for exams. Hard work and perseverance can yield great

results for those students who are willing to put in the effort to suc-

ceed in their courses. However, we need to remember that students

also need our encouragement and support to complete their courses

and perform well on exams. We encourage you to please contact

staff if you have any questions or concerns regarding your progress

in any of his/her courses.

Students have done their course selections for next year, and the

2016/17 timetable is in the process of being developed. We are ex-

cited about the numerous programs and courses offered at HSS

next year, that will once again meet the varied needs and interests

of our students. Please contact our school administration or coun-

selors if you have any queries or questions about your son or

daughter’s courses for next year.

Literature 12 Literary Feast

Students in Literature 12 took part in a Literary Feast on Friday, May 26th during B block. Stu-

dents presented a variety of pieces from the literature that we’ve studied so far in a colourful

array of costumes. Each student brought some traditional English food such as mushy peas

and apple pudding, we toasted each other with sparkling juice, and we shared some laughter.

Some special guests joined us and the students enjoyed Mr. Pascuzzi’s contribution of lines

from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar.

The following students participated in the Canadian Mathematics Competition this year: Hanzhen Xu,

Ryu Ueno-Tardiff, Julia Olivares-Abril, Hyunkyu Lee, Katelyn Byrne, Javier Hernandez, Sergio Es-

cudero, Wayne Yang, Diego Hernandez, Yiyang, Zhai, Erik Yaremkewich.

The Centrre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (University of Waterloo) has recognized the

following HSS students who have earned school medals for their achievement:

Cayley Contest (Grade 10) – Javier Hernandez

Fermat Contest (Grade 11) – Hanzhen Xu

Euclid Contest (Grade 12) - Hanzhen Xu

Special thanks to Hanzhen Xu for his efforts in establishing a Math Club at HSS this year. The Math

Club met on a weekly basis during the first semester. We hope to have a Math Club again next year.

Howe Sound is going even more GREEN! We have recently revised our school waste management to add the collection of compost and mixed recycling (plastic, tin) to

our existing program of paper recycling and refundable drink recycling. Now students and staff have the opportunity to compost their organic waste and recycle their hard plastics throughout the

school at one of our 15 new recycle stations. We are excited with the new initiative as it will allow us to drastically reduce our waste sent to the landfill and also allow us to preserve natural resources with our recycling.

We encourage all our students to take these same steps at home composting organic waste and recycling. Special thanks to our PAC who provided the funding to make this project a reality.

We are also pleased to announce that our school wide Earth Day petition asking the District of Squamish to ban the use of

"single use plastic", including shopping bags, take out containers and plastic beverage cups received at total of 523 signatures. Mayor and council have discussed our petition at a recent council meeting and are looking into the legality and logistics of im-plementing a ban on single use plastics. It is an exciting time as student's voices are heard by our local government and we are making positive change to protect our environment. We encourage all our Howe Sound school community to avoid the use of

"single-use plastics" in your day to day life. We can make a difference!
