I. PROGRAMOVERVIEWAnthropologistsstudyhumansinrelationtothemselves,theirpast,theirenvironment,andtheirbiologicalheritage.Asadiscipline,Anthropologyspansthesocialandnaturalsciencesandthehumanities,andisequippedwithvarioustoolsandapproachestostudyhumanproblems.Weareuniqueamongsocialsciencesinourcommitmenttoaholisticperspectiveandinourrelianceonfieldworkasaprimarymeansofgatheringinformation.Ourknowledgeandskillscontributecriticalperspectivesoncontemporarytransformationswithinacademiaandinsocietyatlarge.GraduateeducationinAnthropologyatMSUisdirectedtowarddevelopmentofhighachievementinscholarshipamonganewgenerationofanthropologists,includingacommitmenttoresearch,publicengagement,andtheethicalpracticeofanthropology. Thevariousstagesofgraduatestudies,includingcourses,comprehensiveexams,proposalsanddissertationresearchandwriting,areallnecessarystepsinthedevelopmentofaprofessionalanthropologist. Therearealsoopportunitiestoparticipateinascholarlycommunitythroughdepartmentbrownbags,visitinglectures,facultysearchesandinterdisciplinaryprograms.Asadiscipline,Anthropologyhighlightsthevalueofdiverseknowledge,viewpointsandperspectives,andtheprocessofinvestigatingandintegratingknowledgefromdiversesourcesintheproductionandimplementationofnewideas,methods,andpolicy. TheDepartmentofAnthropologyatMSUtakesprideinthediversityofourowncommunityofscholars,includingourgraduatestudentsandfaculty,andiscommittedtomaintainingandsupportingthisdiversitybothinourDepartmentandintheprofession. PROGRAMCOMPONENTS/PLANOPTIONSSummaryofProgramRequirementsThegraduateprograminAnthropologyisdirectedtopreparestudentswiththeknowledgeandskillstheyneedtobecomeindependentresearchersandscholars,regardlessoftheirultimatecareersorworksettings. AllgraduatedegreesinAnthropologythereforesharethesamebasicstructure,includingcoursework,researchdesign,independentresearchthatintegratesdataandanthropologicaltheory,andthecommunicationandpresentationofresearchresults.AllincomingstudentsareencouragedtoapplytothePh.D.program,andinmostcases,willbeadmitteddirectlyasPh.D.students.StudentshaveeightyearstocompletethePh.D.programbeginningwiththefirstAnthropologycoursethatcountstowardtheirprogram.ForthoseenteringunderthePhDcode,thisistypicallythefirstAnthropologycoursetaken.IfenteringundertheMAcode,thefirstclassbeyondthe30creditsusedfortheMAcounts.Often,butnotalways,thiswillbe999dissertationcredits. • AnnotatedReferences. Eachreferencemustbeannotatedorjustified,eitherinanannotationforeachentryorinaseriesofshortessaysinwhicheveryentryiscited,providinganexplanationofthestudent’schoicetoincludespecificreferences.

• Useaconsistentformat.Eachofthebibliographieswilladheretoaconsistentformat. All sourceslistedinthebibliographieswillbecitedintheannotations,andallsourcescitedwillbelisted. Thenumberofreferencesshouldbenotedforeachsectionaswellasthetotalforeachbibliography.

ThestudentdraftsthebibliographiesandcirculatesthemamongthemembersoftheGuidanceCommitteeforcommentsandsuggestions. Facultymembersareexpectedtorespondwithcommentswithintwoweeksofreceivingadraft.ReviewofGraduateCurriculumandProgramsCommitteeAftertheGuidanceCommitteeapprovesthebibliographies,thestudentcompletesthe“RequesttoScheduletheComprehensiveExamination”form(Appendix9)andattachesittothebibliographies.ThesearesubmittedtothedepartmentGraduateSecretarywhowillverifydatesandforwardtotheGraduateCurriculumandProgramsCommitteeforreviewandapprovalaccordingtothedatessetbytheCommitteeatthebeginningoftheacademicyear. Thecomprehensiveexamsmustnotbescheduledsoonerthantenbusinessdaysaftertheturn-indate.TheGraduateCurriculumandProgramsCommitteereviewsthebibliographiesforadherencetotheguidelinesprovidedandensurescomparableandequitabletreatmentofallgraduatestudentsintheDepartment,regardlessofthecompositionoftheirGuidanceCommittees.Thecomprehensivebibliographiesaretheintellectualpropertyofthestudentwhocompilesthem,andthedepartmentdoesnotdistributethem. V.FORMATIONOFTHEGUIDANCECOMMITTEEComposingtheCommitteeNolaterthanthethirdsemesterintheprogram,thestudentmusthaveafullyformedGuidanceCommitteetoassistthemincourseselectionandpreparationforresearch. TheGuidancecommitteeisformalizedthroughGradPlan. AnychangestothecompositionofthecommitteearesubmittedthroughGradPlan.Studentsshouldconsultwithfacultyregardingcommitteecomposition;however,ifastudentelectstoremoveamemberfromthecommittee,advancepermissionfromthatpersonneednotbesought. ThechangescanbemadeinGradPlan,andthefacultymemberwillbeautomaticallynotified. TheDepartmentChairortheGraduateProgramDirectorcanapprovechangestocommitteemembership.Thestudentshould,however,notifytheremainingcommitteemembersofthechange.TheGuidanceCommitteeconsistsofatleastfourregularfacultymembersfromMSU.TheCommitteeChairpersonandasecondcommitteemembermustberegular“tenure-stream”or“approved”facultyoftheDepartmentofAnthropology. ThethirdmembermustalsobefromtheDepartment’sfaculty,butmayhaveeitheraregularoranadjunctappointmentinAnthropology.TheDepartmentstronglyrecommendsthatthefourthcommitteememberbefromanMSUdepartmentoutsideAnthropology.ThatindividualmustbearegularMSUfacultymemberinadisciplinethatisrelevanttothestudent’sinterestsandcourseofstudies.AGuidanceCommitteemayalsoincludeadditionalfacultymembersfromotheruniversities.Ifanon-MSUornon-regular(non-tenured)memberisadded,thismustbeapprovedbytheCollegeofSocialScienceandtheDeanoftheGraduateSchool(Appendix4).ThestudenthastheresponsibilitytogettoknowavarietyoffacultymemberswithintheDepartmentandinrelateddisciplines,eitherthroughformalcourseworkorbyparticipationininformalinteractionsthataccompanysocialandprofessionaleventssuchasbrownbaglectures,colloquia,Departmentsponsoredsocialevents,andotherinformalinteractions.Thestudentcanalsousefacultyofficehourstoinitiateconversationswithvariousfacultymembersregardingtheirresearchinterestsandongoingprojects.TheDepartmentChairmustapproveallGuidanceCommitteemembersandreservestherighttoappointonemember. VI.T H E S I S /DISSERTATIONDEFENSEANDFINALORALEXAMINATIONThedoctoraldissertationisasustainedanalysisanddiscussionbasedonoriginalresearch.TheDepartmentexpectsfieldwork-baseddissertations.Alternativekindsofdissertationsmaybepossible,butmustbejustifiedandapprovedbytheGuidanceCommitteeinwriting.FundingDissertationResearchFundingfordissertationresearchisoftenneededforlanguagestudy,travel,equipment,andanalysisofsomematerialsbyspecialists. Studentsmayalsoneedfundingforpersonalsupportduringfieldwork,analysis,andwriting.Applyingforexternalfundingisoftencriticalforstudentsintheirfuturejobsearches,sincemostorganizations(whetheracademicornot)expectemployeestoacquireexternalfunding.Thestudent’sGuidanceCommitteeisthebestsourceofinformationregardingsourcesoffundinginthestudent’sgeographicareaandspecialty. TheGraduateSchoolalsohasinformationregardingfundingfordissertationresearch(http://grad.msu.edu/funding/),andthelibrarymaintainsanonlinelistofsources(http://staff.lib.msu.edu/harris23/grants/index.htm)TheDepartment’sBusinessManagercanhelpprovidebudgetinformationthatmayberequiredforgrantpreparation. MostproposalsrequirethesignatureoftheGuidanceCommitteeChair,andmanyaresubmittedintheirnamewiththestudentastheco-principalinvestigator. IncomingstudentsareeligibleforfundingpackagessuchastheUniversityDistinguishedFellowships(UDF),ForeignLanguageAreasStudies(FLAS)fellowships),andAnthropologyDepartmentfellowships.PostFieldworkStudentsPostfieldworkfinancialaidwillbe awardedthroughaGraduateCurriculumandProgramsCommitteeevaluationofapplicationmaterialssubmittedbythestudentandvotedonbythefaculty.Theapplicationincludesaworkplananda supportingletter fromthestudent’sadvisor,alongwiththestudent’sstatementofotheraccomplishments.Theworkplanwill includea copyofthedissertationproposal,aone-pagethesisabstractandchapteroutline,andawritingschedulefortheperiodoftheaward.
