I. PROGRAMOVERVIEWAnthropologistsstudyhumansinrelationtothemselves,theirpast,theirenvironment,andtheirbiologicalheritage.Asadiscipline,Anthropologyspansthesocialandnaturalsciencesandthehumanities,andisequippedwithvarioustoolsandapproachestostudyhumanproblems.Weareuniqueamongsocialsciencesinourcommitmenttoaholisticperspectiveandinourrelianceonfieldworkasaprimarymeansofgatheringinformation.Ourknowledgeandskillscontributecriticalperspectivesoncontemporarytransformationswithinacademiaandinsocietyatlarge.GraduateeducationinAnthropologyatMSUisdirectedtowarddevelopmentofhighachievementinscholarshipamonganewgenerationofanthropologists,includingacommitmenttoresearch,publicengagement,andtheethicalpracticeofanthropology. Thevariousstagesofgraduatestudies,includingcourses,comprehensiveexams,proposalsanddissertationresearchandwriting,areallnecessarystepsinthedevelopmentofaprofessionalanthropologist. Therearealsoopportunitiestoparticipateinascholarlycommunitythroughdepartmentbrownbags,visitinglectures,facultysearchesandinterdisciplinaryprograms.Asadiscipline,Anthropologyhighlightsthevalueofdiverseknowledge,viewpointsandperspectives,andtheprocessofinvestigatingandintegratingknowledgefromdiversesourcesintheproductionandimplementationofnewideas,methods,andpolicy. TheDepartmentofAnthropologyatMSUtakesprideinthediversityofourowncommunityofscholars,includingourgraduatestudentsandfaculty,andiscommittedtomaintainingandsupportingthisdiversitybothinourDepartmentandintheprofession. TheDepartmentalsoemphasizestheimportanceofcollaborativeworkwiththepeopleandcommunitieswhomwestudy,andtheneedtoshareourresearchwithavarietyofaudiences.Aspartofalandgrantinstitution,theDepartmentofAnthropologyatMichiganStateUniversityistheoreticallyengagedandpractice-orientedinitsapproachestoresearchandteaching. PROGRAMCOMPONENTS/PLANOPTIONSSummaryofProgramRequirementsThegraduateprograminAnthropologyisdirectedtopreparestudentswiththeknowledgeandskillstheyneedtobecomeindependentresearchersandscholars,regardlessoftheirultimatecareersorworksettings. AllgraduatedegreesinAnthropologythereforesharethesamebasicstructure,includingcoursework,researchdesign,independentresearchthatintegratesdataandanthropologicaltheory,andthecommunicationandpresentationofresearchresults.AllincomingstudentsareencouragedtoapplytothePh.D.program,andinmostcases,willbeadmitteddirectlyasPh.D.students.StudentshaveeightyearstocompletethePh.D.programbeginningwiththefirstAnthropologycoursethatcountstowardtheirprogram.ForthoseenteringunderthePhDcode,thisistypicallythefirstAnthropologycoursetaken.IfenteringundertheMAcode,thefirstclassbeyondthe30creditsusedfortheMAcounts.Often,butnotalways,thiswillbe999dissertationcredits. IssuingI-20sforProvisionalAdmission• Ifinternationalstudentsareadmittedonaprovisionalbasisbecauseoflanguageproficiency

requirements,theycanbeissuedanI-20forlanguagestudiesonly.ThisI-20islimitedtoamaximumof2years.ThestudentwouldneedtobetestedattheEnglishLanguageCenteruponarrivalandbeginstudyingintheEnglishleveldeterminedbythattest.Oncethestudentmeetsthedepartmentalrequirementsforlanguage,thestudentmaybeissuedadegree-seekingI-20.Ifthestudenthasnotmetthestatedlanguageproficiencyrequirementfordepartment/programadmissionattheendoftwoyears,thestudentcannotcontinuetoenrollforcourses.

• ProvisionaladmissionforinternationalstudentscanbegrantedONLYforlanguagedeficiencies.RegulationswillnotallowtheissuingofanI-20forprovisionaladmissionsforacademicreasons.

RequirementsforPlanA/PlanBMaster’sDegreesAminimumof30creditsofgraduatecoursework,includingANP830andANP840andamethodscourseappropriateforthestudent’ssubdiscipline,approvedbythestudent’sGuidanceCommittee,whichconsistsofatleastthreeAnthropologyfacultymembers.Twentyoneofthe30creditsmustbeearnedinAnthropology;16mustbeearnedincoursesnumbered800andabove.Additionalcourseworkmayberequiredbeyond30creditsbythestudent’sguidancecommittee.TheDepartmentrequiresagradeofnolessthan3.0ineachANPcourse.ThePlanAdegreerequiresthestudenttowriteanapprovedthesisproposal(Appendix5),andwriteanddefendamaster’sthesis(Appendix6). AfterthePh.D.DegreePlanhasbeengeneratedandapproved,GradPlanwillbeusedtorecordtheresultsofthecomprehensiveexamsaswellasthedissertationdefensereport.YoucanmonitorthestatusofapprovalsbycheckingyourGradPlan.IfyouseethatapprovalsarependingyoushouldcontactcommitteememberstoremindthemthatyourPlanisawaitingtheirapproval.ComprehensiveExaminationsThecomprehensiveexamsconsistof:thepreparationofanannotatedbibliography,completionofthewrittenexam,oraldefenseofthewrittenexam,preparationofawrittendissertationproposal,andthepublicpresentationandoraldefenseoftheproposal.Beforethe“RecordofComprehensiveExaminations”(includedhereasAppendix20),isprocessed,studentsmusthavedefendedthedissertationproposalandsuccessfullycompletedthewrittenandoralcomprehensiveexaminations.PreparingtheAnnotatedBibliographyInconsultationwiththeGuidanceCommittee,thestudentwillselecttwoorthreeexaminationareas.Graduatestudentbibliographieswillconsistofeither1)acombinationofgeographicandtopicalareasor2)acombinationofonlytopicalareasasagreeduponbythestudentandthestudent’sGuidancecommittee.Thestudent,withtheadviceoftheGuidanceCommittee,thenpreparesaComprehensiveExamBibliography.Thetotalnumberofentriesforthebibliographiesis150.Iftwoareasaredefined,eachbibliographyshouldcontainapproximately75entries.Ifthreeareasaredefined,eachbibliographyshouldcontainapproximately50entries.Thebibliographyisintendedtodemonstratethestudent’sknowledgeofthescholarlyliteratureintheselectedtopicandgeographicarea. Itismoregeneralthanthedissertationtopicandestablishesexpertisewithinadefinedareaofanthropology(seeAppendix18forexamples).AcceptableBibliographiesmustincludethefollowingcomponentandformattingrequirements:

• Ageneralintroductionforeachbibliography. Foreachtopic(ortopicandarea),thestudentwillincludeabriefintroductoryessayarticulatingajustificationfortheselectionofthetopicandthetheoreticalapproachestobeconsideredinaddressingtheoveralltopic.

• AnnotatedReferences. Eachreferencemustbeannotatedorjustified,eitherinanannotationforeachentryorinaseriesofshortessaysinwhicheveryentryiscited,providinganexplanationofthestudent’schoicetoincludespecificreferences.

• Useaconsistentformat.Eachofthebibliographieswilladheretoaconsistentformat. All sourceslistedinthebibliographieswillbecitedintheannotations,andallsourcescitedwillbelisted. Thenumberofreferencesshouldbenotedforeachsectionaswellasthetotalforeachbibliography.

ThestudentdraftsthebibliographiesandcirculatesthemamongthemembersoftheGuidanceCommitteeforcommentsandsuggestions. Facultymembersareexpectedtorespondwithcommentswithintwoweeksofreceivingadraft.ReviewofGraduateCurriculumandProgramsCommitteeAftertheGuidanceCommitteeapprovesthebibliographies,thestudentcompletesthe“RequesttoScheduletheComprehensiveExamination”form(Appendix9)andattachesittothebibliographies.ThesearesubmittedtothedepartmentGraduateSecretarywhowillverifydatesandforwardtotheGraduateCurriculumandProgramsCommitteeforreviewandapprovalaccordingtothedatessetbytheCommitteeatthebeginningoftheacademicyear. Thecomprehensiveexamsmustnotbescheduledsoonerthantenbusinessdaysaftertheturn-indate.TheGraduateCurriculumandProgramsCommitteereviewsthebibliographiesforadherencetotheguidelinesprovidedandensurescomparableandequitabletreatmentofallgraduatestudentsintheDepartment,regardlessofthecompositionoftheirGuidanceCommittees.Thecomprehensivebibliographiesaretheintellectualpropertyofthestudentwhocompilesthem,andthedepartmentdoesnotdistributethem. Ifastudentdesiresaccesstobibliographiespreviouslypreparedbyotherstudents,thestudentshouldrequestpermissiondirectlyfromtheauthorofthebibliographiesforpermissiontoviewthem.SchedulingofExams/ProposalDefenseBibliographiesmustbesubmittedtotheGraduateCurriculumandProgramscommitteebythedatessetatthebeginningoftheacademicyear. Thecomprehensiveexamsmustcommencenosoonerthattenbusinessdaysaftertheturn-indate.ExamsandProposalsmaynotbetakenordefendedaftertheUniversityfinalsweek. Studentsareresponsibleforschedulinganexamearlyenoughtoallowtimeforadefensebytheendofthesemester;otherwise,theoraldefensewilltakeplaceinthenextfallorspringsemester.Ifthereareextremeandextenuatingcircumstancesthatmakethisnecessary,thispolicycanbewaivedthroughanagreementwiththeGuidancecommitteeandtheChairoftheDepartment.TheWrittenExamAfterapproval,thestudentiseligibletositforthecomprehensiveexams. Examsmustbescheduledduringweekdaysonlyandnotonholidaysthatfallduringtheweekwheretheofficeisclosed.

2) A48-houropen-booktake-homeexam.StudentscanonlyschedulethedatesonMonday,Tuesday,orWednesdayofanygivenweekinordertocompletetheexamswithinthe48hourperiodandsendthemtotheGraduateSecretaryfordistributiontocommitteemembers.

3) Atwo-weekopen-booktake-homeexam,withalimitof30double-spacedpages.EvaluationEachanswerisreadbytwodesignatedreadersandevaluatedaccordingtoAppendix15.AtleastonereaderforeachsectionmustbeamemberoftheGuidanceCommittee.ThesecondreadermaybeanotherfacultymemberfromtheDepartmentofAnthropologyormaybefromoutsidetheDepartment.ThestudentandtheGuidanceCommitteedevelopa tentativescheduleincludingthedatesoftheexamand theoral defense.TheGuidanceCommitteewillevaluatethewrittenexamwithintwoweeksafterthestudentcompletestheexam,andtheoraldefensewilltakeplacesoonthereafter. TheGuidanceCommitteewillconferwitheachotheranddecideifthestudenthaspassedtheexam. TheChairoftheGuidanceCommitteewillnotifythestudentofthisdecisionnolaterthan24hoursbeforetheoralexamisscheduledtooccur.Ifeitherwrittenresponsesreceivesanon-passinggradefromthecommittee,theoralportionwillnormallybepostponed. GraduateSecretarywithaonepageabstract,approvedbytheGuidanceCommitteeChair,fordistribution.Thestudentwillmakeashortpresentationoftheproposedresearch,andthereistimeforquestionsfromtheaudienceaswellasdiscussionbothwiththestudent,andprivatelyamongthefaculty.Uponasuccessfuldefense,theGuidanceCommitteesignsthe“ApprovaloftheDissertationProposal”(Appendix11). Thestudentreturnsthisform,afinalcopyoftheproposal,andacopyoftheIRBverificationform(Appendix8),withsignedapprovals(ifrequired)totheGraduateSecretary.Failuretohavethesedocumentsonfilebeforebeginningdissertationresearchisgroundsfordismissalfromtheprogram.TimeLimitsfortheWrittenExamandProposalThedissertationproposalcanbepresentedanddefendedeitherbeforeorafterthestudenttakesthewrittenexams;however,completionofallpartsoftheComprehensiveExammusttakenolongerthantwosemesters.TheUniversityrequiresthattheentireComprehensiveExam(writtenexamanddefense,anddissertationproposalanddefense)mustbecompletedwithin5yearsofthefirstcoursetakenforthePhDprogram.OncestudentspasstheComprehensiveExamination,theyareclassifiedas“doctoralcandidates.”WritingtheDissertationAdoctoraldissertationisanoriginaltheoreticaland/ormethodologicalcontributiontotheliteratureofAnthropology.DifferentGuidanceCommitteesmayhavedifferentideasabouthowadissertationshouldbewritten,andwhatinformationitshouldincludeinthetextoritsappendixes. IV. SELECTIONOFTHESIS/DISSERTATIONADVISORFirstYearAdvisorEachincominggraduatestudentisassignedafirstyearadvisorbasedonthefaculty’sevaluationoftheincomingstudent’sresearchinterests. ThisadvisorwillhelpstudentscompletetheFirstYearPlanofStudy(Appendix1)andprovideassistanceuntilthestudentselectsaChairfortheGuidanceCommittee.ThefirstyearadvisorcanbeselectedasChairbythestudent,butneednotbe.TheGuidanceCommitteeChairandDissertationAdvisorBytheendofthefirstyearofgraduatestudy,thestudentselectsafacultymembertobetheGuidanceCommitteeChairandDissertationAdvisor. Ideally,thestudent’sChairissomeonewithwhomthestudentcanestablishamentoring,aswellasanadvising,relationship. notmeetexpectations.• Helpingstudentsdevelopintosuccessfulprofessionalsandcolleagues.Ifafacultymemberretiresbeforethestudentcompleteshis/herdegree,theretiringfacultymemberandeachofhis/herstudentsmustcometoanagreementregardingrolesandexpectations.Anemeritus(retired)facultymembercanchoosetocontinuetoserveasoneofthefourrequiredfacultymembersonadoctoralGuidanceCommittee,orastheGuidanceCommitteeChair,withtheapprovaloftheDepartmentChair.ThestudentandthefacultymemberneedtodeterminewhetherthefacultymemberiswillingtocontinueservingontheGuidanceCommitteeorasChairoftheGuidanceCommittee,andwhattheirroleinthegraduatestudent’sresearchwillbe.Alternatively,thegraduatestudentmayselectanewChair,designateacurrentfacultymembertoserveasco-Chairwiththeretiringfacultymember,orreplacetheretiringfacultymemberentirely. Ingeneral,theUniversityexpectsthatretiringfacultywillbedonewithsuchadvisingdutiesafteroneyear,buttheexactlengthoftimeishighlyvariableanddependsonindividualcircumstances.AfacultymemberwholeavesMSUforajobatanotherinstitution(thatis,whodoesnothaveemeritusstatus)isclassifiedasafacultymemberfromoutsideMSU(seediscussioninsectionV).

V.FORMATIONOFTHEGUIDANCECOMMITTEEComposingtheCommitteeNolaterthanthethirdsemesterintheprogram,thestudentmusthaveafullyformedGuidanceCommitteetoassistthemincourseselectionandpreparationforresearch. TheGuidancecommitteeisformalizedthroughGradPlan. AnychangestothecompositionofthecommitteearesubmittedthroughGradPlan.Studentsshouldconsultwithfacultyregardingcommitteecomposition;however,ifastudentelectstoremoveamemberfromthecommittee,advancepermissionfromthatpersonneednotbesought. ThechangescanbemadeinGradPlan,andthefacultymemberwillbeautomaticallynotified. TheDepartmentChairortheGraduateProgramDirectorcanapprovechangestocommitteemembership.Thestudentshould,however,notifytheremainingcommitteemembersofthechange.TheGuidanceCommitteeconsistsofatleastfourregularfacultymembersfromMSU.TheCommitteeChairpersonandasecondcommitteemembermustberegular“tenure-stream”or“approved”facultyoftheDepartmentofAnthropology. ThethirdmembermustalsobefromtheDepartment’sfaculty,butmayhaveeitheraregularoranadjunctappointmentinAnthropology.TheDepartmentstronglyrecommendsthatthefourthcommitteememberbefromanMSUdepartmentoutsideAnthropology.ThatindividualmustbearegularMSUfacultymemberinadisciplinethatisrelevanttothestudent’sinterestsandcourseofstudies.AGuidanceCommitteemayalsoincludeadditionalfacultymembersfromotheruniversities.Ifanon-MSUornon-regular(non-tenured)memberisadded,thismustbeapprovedbytheCollegeofSocialScienceandtheDeanoftheGraduateSchool(Appendix4).ThestudenthastheresponsibilitytogettoknowavarietyoffacultymemberswithintheDepartmentandinrelateddisciplines,eitherthroughformalcourseworkorbyparticipationininformalinteractionsthataccompanysocialandprofessionaleventssuchasbrownbaglectures,colloquia,Departmentsponsoredsocialevents,andotherinformalinteractions.Thestudentcanalsousefacultyofficehourstoinitiateconversationswithvariousfacultymembersregardingtheirresearchinterestsandongoingprojects.TheDepartmentChairmustapproveallGuidanceCommitteemembersandreservestherighttoappointonemember. VI.T H E S I S /DISSERTATIONDEFENSEANDFINALORALEXAMINATIONThedoctoraldissertationisasustainedanalysisanddiscussionbasedonoriginalresearch.TheDepartmentexpectsfieldwork-baseddissertations.Alternativekindsofdissertationsmaybepossible,butmustbejustifiedandapprovedbytheGuidanceCommitteeinwriting.FundingDissertationResearchFundingfordissertationresearchisoftenneededforlanguagestudy,travel,equipment,andanalysisofsomematerialsbyspecialists. Studentsmayalsoneedfundingforpersonalsupportduringfieldwork,analysis,andwriting.Applyingforexternalfundingisoftencriticalforstudentsintheirfuturejobsearches,sincemostorganizations(whetheracademicornot)expectemployeestoacquireexternalfunding.Thestudent’sGuidanceCommitteeisthebestsourceofinformationregardingsourcesoffundinginthestudent’sgeographicareaandspecialty. TheGraduateSchoolalsohasinformationregardingfundingfordissertationresearch(http://grad.msu.edu/funding/),andthelibrarymaintainsanonlinelistofsources(http://staff.lib.msu.edu/harris23/grants/index.htm)TheDepartment’sBusinessManagercanhelpprovidebudgetinformationthatmayberequiredforgrantpreparation. Thegrantingagenciesthemselvesarealsoavailabletoanswerquestionsaboutwhetheraparticularprojectwouldbefundablebythatagency,andwhatbudgetitemsmayormaynotbeapproved.ApplicantsareexpectedtocalloremailtheappropriateagencyProgramOfficerwiththesesortsofquestions.MaketwohardcopiesofanygrantproposalandbudgetfortheDepartment. TheDepartment’sBusinessManagermusthaveacopyofanygrantproposalthatyousubmit.TheGraduateSecretaryalsoneedsonecopyforyourgraduatestudentfile.GrantapplicationsforfieldresearchinvolvinghumansubjectsrequireproofofSIRBapproval.Thisapprovalmustbeobtainedbeforethegrantcanbesubmitted. Usually,approvaloftheDeanofInternationalStudiesandPrograms(ISP)isrequired.Allfundingproposalsmusthaveapprovalsandsignaturesfromunitswithintheuniversity. ForagenciessuchasNationalScienceFoundation(NSF),WennerGren,NationalInstituteofHealth(NIH),andNationalEndowmentfortheHumanities(NEH),theDepartmentChair,theDeanoftheCollegeofSocialSciences,andtheOfficeofSponsoredProgramsmustapprovetheproposalandbudget. MostproposalsrequirethesignatureoftheGuidanceCommitteeChair,andmanyaresubmittedintheirnamewiththestudentastheco-principalinvestigator. AnyproposalsforinternationalresearchrequirethesignatureoftheDeanofInternationalStudiesandPrograms.Priortoobtainingsignatures,itisexpectedthatthestudentwillhavereceivedfeedbackontheirproposalfromtheirGuidanceCommittee;studentsmusthavetheapprovaloftheirGuidanceCommitteeChairtosubmitafundingproposal.SomegrantsorfellowshipqualifyforadditionalfundingthroughtheGraduateSchool.ConsulttheGraduateSchoolwebsiteforinstructions(http://grad.msu.edu/funding/).ConductingFieldworkStudentsarerequiredtokeepincontactwiththeirGuidanceCommitteeChairduringdissertationfieldworkandwriting. ThebestwaytoavoidproblemsandconflictisforthestudenttokeepallmembersoftheirGuidanceCommitteeinformedoftheirresearchactivities,schedule,plans,andanychangesinplans.The

GriefandBereavementPolicyTheDepartmentrecognizestheneedtoaccommodatethebereavementprocessofastudentwhohaslostafamilymemberorwhoisexperiencingemotionaldistressfromasimilartragedysothatthestudentisnotacademicallydisadvantagedintheirclassesorotheracademicwork.Formaster’s(PlanA),master’s(PlanB)withresearchresponsibilities,anddoctoralstudents,itistheresponsibilityofthestudentto:• notifytheiradvisor/majorprofessorandfacultyofthecoursesinwhichtheyareenrolledoftheneedfora

DEPARTMENTALPOLICIES:INTEGRITYANDSAFETYINRESEARCHANDCREATIVEACTIVITIESTrainingintheResponsibleConductofResearchisessentialinthepreparationoffuturescholarsandprofessionals.Anunderstandingoftheissuesconcerningtheconductofresearchinanincreasinglycomplexworldhasbecomecriticalinsuccessfullynavigatingtheresearchlandscape.TohelpprepareMichiganStateUniversitygraduatestudentsfortheirfuturescholarlywork,aplanforprovidingthefoundationofresponsibleconducthasbeendevelopedincoordinationwiththeGraduateSchool,theVicePresidentforResearchandGraduateStudiesOffice,andcollegeassociatedeansforgraduateeducation.Theplanispredicatedontheprinciplesthatabasicunderstandingofissuesisnecessarythroughdidactictrainingandaperiodicreinforcementoftheprinciplesthroughdiscussion.Itisthebeliefthatthisplanwillprovideafoundationforallgraduatestudentsaswellasotherspursuingacareerinresearchandwillofferthebasicinformationtomeetmost,ifnotall,federalagencygrantingrequirements.Integrityinresearchandallprofessionalactivitiesisbasedonsounddisciplinarypracticeaswellasonacommitmenttobasicvaluessuchasfairness,equity,honesty,andrespect.
