[email protected] and we will

anonymously display it on the next chatter and on the

Chisenhale website. We would love to see it!

Updates from the staff in Y6 this week:

Hello everyone! I hope you’re all ok and

looking after yourselves. I completed a 1000

piece jigsaw this week. I’ve also been trying

out some new recipes in the kitchen –

yesterday I made a delicious veggie curry! It

was lovely to speak to so many of you on the

phone this week. Well done with the home

learning you’ve done so far and keep it up!

Mrs Purchase

Hello Year 6! It’s been lovely to speak to

some of you over the last few days, and

good to catch up with what you’ve all been

up to. This last week has been all about

training for the triathlon I’m taking part in in

September. Lots of running and cycling (no

swimming at the moment) and very sore

legs! That will pass though, right? Mr Allen x

Hello everyone! Hope you’re all well and using your

brains! This week I’ve been reading a book that you

might be doing next term and drawing one big picture

that sums up the whole story! I’ve based it on an artist

called Grayson Perry, who is also doing a great TV show

on Channel 4 called ‘Grayson's Art Club’

Check it out if you can! Also the snails got to some of my

seedlings :-( so I’ve had to do loads more planting seeds!

Miss you all xxx Kat

Hey everyone! Hope you’ve all been managing well. I thought

this week I’d talk about something a little bit different... Do

you remember when we had mental health awareness week?

We said it is good to talk to someone if you are feeling a bit

worried, anxious or low? It’s normal to feel like this from time

to time and if you do, make sure you have a chat with

someone at home. Stay safe, Akbar.

Hi there Year 6. Hope you are all well and keeping up with your home learning. This week I have been busy helping my husband to bake bread - this is a new challenge for us but we are slowly starting to master it. Looks like it’s going to be a nice weekend, so don't forget to go out and get a bit of fresh air with your daily exercise. Stay safe and keep smiling - I miss all your smiley faces. Love Amanda xxx

Hello Year 6, Hope you are all keeping safe

09:30-10:30 Literacy – this week’s writing outcome is to

produce a newspaper report about Stan’s adventures. We will write this on Friday. Reading – read today’s extract Write your answers to todays’ comprehension questions in your exercise book. 1 Name three things that the people in the audience are doing on the first page of today’s extract. 2 “I’m scared of something but I don’t know what”. Then he knows. What is it that Stan knows? 3 Stan has lots of memories going through his head in today’s extract. Write down two of them. 4 Why do you think the illustrator has printed part of the story on black pages in this extract? Extra for experts: 5 How do you think Pancho Pirelli feels at this point in the story? Writing On the next page of this chatter is a front page newspaper article from ‘First News’. Read it through. What an achievement by both Captain Tom Moore and young Frank! Within the article, consider where the key features of a newspaper report are. If you can print the chatter, underline the features. If not, find examples of the features and write them into your exercise book.

- Headline - Short paragraphs - The main information is in the first paragraph. - Quotes from relevant people involved. -

Use this bitesize link to help you get to grips with newspaper reports: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z2yycdm/articles/z2gk9qt Extra for experts: Can you think of an alternative newspaper headline for this report?

10:30-11:00 Break 11:00-12:00 Maths Maths – Summer Term – Week 5 – Lesson 1 Questions and answers for each lesson are attached to the email. This week we’re looking at decimals. We’ll begin my multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 and then move on to multiplying and dividing decimals. For a quick refresher on decimals click here: https://youtu.be/FTZKB0xSgh4 For our first lesson we’re multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000. When we multiply by these amounts we shift the decimal point to the right. One place right for 10, two places right for 100 and three places right for 1000. When we divide by 10, 100 and 1000 we do the opposite and shift the decimal point to the left instead. The video links for today’s lesson can be found on the White Rose website. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-6/

13:00 Science So far we have discovered that friction between surfaces can slow objects or prevent them from moving, while objects passing through the air have air resistance to deal with. Friction and air resistance are therefore things that designers of things like cars and aeroplanes need to consider. But what about moving through water? Think back to our swimming lessons at the Olympic Pool: Is it easier to run through air or through water? Why? Water is denser than air. An object moving through air will encounter less resistance than the same object travelling at the same speed through water. Think about objects or animals that move quickly through water. What feature do they have in common?

In the same way that racing cars are designed to overcome air resistance on land many creatures are cleverly designed to overcome water resistance – this

is sometimes known as streamlining. Watch a BBC Bitesize clip on air and water resistance here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zsxxsbk/articles/zxw6gdm Take two objects of the same mass (plasticine or blu-tac are ideal). Fill up a large, transparent bottle with water. With each object starting at the same

height, drop one through the air and the other through the water. What happens? Can you explain why? Water resistance increases as the surface area of a submerged object increases. That is the reason swimmers try to make their bodies as compact as possible as they move through the water. Your challenge is to make your plasticine move faster or slower through the water by changing its shape. Sketch each shape and record the time each shape takes to reach the bottom of the bottle. What is the fastest shape you can make? What is the slowest shape you can make? How can you make sure your investigation is fair? If you don’t have any plasticine or blu-tac at home, a stone or metal object wrapped in kitchen foil in different shapes works just as well – just make sure you use the same amount of foil for each shape to keep the investigation fair.

09:30-10:30 Literacy Reading – read today’s extract Write your answers to todays’ comprehension questions in your exercise book. 1 Why do you think Annie and Ernie have come to see Stan? 2 Who do Annie and Ernie meet at the fairground before they find Stan? 3 When they see Stan in the spotlight, Ernie and Annie can’t believe it is really him. What does Ernie say that shows he can’t believe it? 4 Why can’t Annie and Ernie get closer to Stan? Extra for experts: 5 Do you think Stan will be happy to see Annie and Ernie?

1. Writing – inverted commas for quotes One of the features you will need to include in your newspaper article is quotes. Quotes (or quotations) are things people have said. To show that someone has said something and it is quoted in the article, we use inverted commas. If we interviewed Stan about his experience of working with Pancho Pirelli, what might he tell us? For example. “I’d heard about Pancho from my friends at the fair but never dreamed I’d have the chance to work with him – until now”. Write down four different things Stan would tell us – do this in your exercise book. Make sure you use inverted commas (speech marks) around the outside of each bit of speech. You will be able to use your quotes in the newspaper report that you will write on Friday. Use this link to find out a bit more about inverted commas. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zvwwxnb/articles/ztcp97h Extra for experts: Write down some quotes in inverted commas that other characters from the story might say if they were interviewed. This could be Pancho, Dostoyevsky or Nitasha. 10:30-11:00 Break

11:00-12:00 Maths Maths – Summer Term – Week 5 – Lesson 2 Today we’ll be multiplying decimals by integers. There are a few different ways that this can be done. In Year 6 so far we’ve practised by ignoring any decimal places in the original number sentence, and then shifting the decimal point when we finish our calculation.

Mrs Purchase here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTPt14pMMqM&feature=youtu.be (It is also available on the school website.) Write your answers to todays’ comprehension questions in your exercise book. 1 What lie does Pancho tell the audience about Stan at the start of today’s extract? 2 How do members of the audience describe Stan physically? 3 How do you know that Stan felt happy when he first saw Ernie and Annie in the audience? 4 Describe in your own words what happens when Stan goes into the piranha tank. Extra for experts:

1. 5 Why do you think Stan momentarily saw the faces of his mum and dad? Writing – reflecting on Stan’s achievement in the piranha tank Watch this bitesize clip – it’s really good for explaining how to write a news article. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zkgcwmn/articles/zbsbwty The clip explains that a news article should stick to the facts and ensure it provides answers to the 5 Ws (what, when, who, where, why)

Consider Stan’s big achievement in today’s extract. Sketch him into your exercise book (copying the picture on the next page of this chatter) and copy the knowledge organiser that we have started for you.

Once you have copied this picture and the knowledge organise, add details to each section of the organiser to answer the 5 Ws. This will help you to write

your newspaper article about Stan’s achievement on Friday. Extra for experts: Add to your knowledge organiser with a sixth question: How? How did he do this? How did he survive it? 10:30-11:00 Break

Maths – Summer Term – Week 5 – Lesson 3 Today we’ll be dividing decimals by integers. When you are dividing a number with a decimal point by a whole number, dividing decimals is pretty simple: 1) Divide the number as you normally would, using a bus stop. 2) Bring the decimal point directly up from the dividend. So, 9.24 ÷ 7 =

13:00 Art lesson from Kat This week I would like you to draw a scene from ‘The boy who swam with Piranhas’ like we did with ‘Clockwork’. I want you to… -Mind map ideas of what you could include in your image. -Come up with 3 ideas of what your image could be. -layout (composition– how it looks on the page) -Make each design different! -have fun with it! -Choose your favourite design and use mixed media to create it (two different types of materials/media) Oliver Jeffers, the illustrator of the book, mixes pens and pencil. Also he plays around with drawing on top of a watercolour-wash. Use what you can

find in your house, you could even include collage (cut and stick from magazines and newspapers).

If you would like to share your home learning, take a photo of your work and ask an adult to email it to [email protected] and we will anonymously display it on the next chatter and on the Chisenhale website. We would love to see it!

A headline Quote

Main idea in the first paragraph Extra details later on in the

report. Writing – Planning your newspaper report Today you are going to make a plan for creating your newspaper report about Stan’s achievement in the piranha tank. Firstly think of a headline: It should be short and snappy, while delivering the key message. For example:

BOY SWIMS WITH PIRANHAS! or

PIRANHA PARTY FOR LOCAL BOY! Use of one these or better still, make up your own headline.

The lesson is continued on next page

Then create a flow chart plan so that you can jot down what will go into your report. The flow chart should look something like the one below. Use bullet points to jot down the main things you want to include in each paragraph.

Paragraph 1: Main, most important idea – Stan swam with piranhas and survived

Paragraph 2: Details about who Stan is and what he has been up to

And a quote from Stan

Paragraph 3: Information about his trainer Pancho Pirelli

Paragraph 4: Quotes from people who watched the show (Ernie, Annie, Pancho, other member of the audience. And add any other information

Today we’re looking at converting decimals to their equivalent fractions, and vice versa. To convert a Decimal to a Fraction follow these steps:

1) Write down the decimal divided by 1, like this: 2) Multiply both top and bottom by 10 for every number after the decimal point. (For example, if there are two numbers after the decimal point, then use 100, if there are three then use 1000, etc.) 3) Simplify the fraction if possible. So, if I was converting 0.75 to a fraction it would look like this: 1) Write down 0.75 divided by 1.

2) Multiply both top and bottom by 100 (because there are 2 digits after the decimal point so that is 10×10=100).

3) Simplify the fraction (this took me 2 steps).

And finally… discussion at home This week we will be continuing our reflection on the value Resilience by

exploring Resilience and Mental Health Awareness Week.

This year Mental Health Awareness Week is focusing on kindness and asking- how

can we make the future a kinder place? When we are away from our friends, our school and the outside world we may find our mental health becomes effected.

We may feel lonely, worried or depressed. If this sounds like you then please remember you are not alone, this can happen to everyone: children, parents and teachers. We may have a lot of difficult feelings about lockdown but part of developing our resilience to times like this is to remember that they will

not last forever. When we are older it will be up to all of you as the voters, inventors and lawmakers of the future to help make sure the world we exist in is one which is as kind as possible.

Your project for this week is to draw, build or write a description of the world you want to see when you are older. How could you design a world with kindness at its heart?
