the PRESIDENTS RAMBLINGS
Greetings All, A group of us attended the NEWC Show last week, we had a club table and several entries in the show. I was pleased to see that the issues from last year were fixed, overall it was a very good show with a lot of interesting pieces. Speaking of shows, we may have an interesting opportunity for next year. I am working out the details, but this is the rough idea: To do the show as we have in the past years requires a fair amount of money and volunteers. A lot of the things we need volunteers for are related to the show cost. For example we need to charge admission to help pay for the show, so we need volunteers for the admission table. Half of the show setup is for the vendor spaces which helps pay for the show Etc. If we had a suitable venue for the show that was no or low cost, the competition pays for itself and we wouldn't need to charge admission, nor would we need as many vendor spaces. It needs to be easy to setup and require fewer volunteers to run and there may be a way. Stay tuned for details. Please take a look at the Agenda section in the newsletter. To continue to promote the art of woodcarving we need more active Chapters in more areas of the State. This is the first step to help grow the association. Bob Grimm MWCA President

In the By-laws, Article IV, Organization, states that “Any group of members may propose a
chapter to the Board of Directors. Each Chapter will elect its own officers and each Chapter of
ten (10) members or more members will elect a chapter member as Chapter Director to serve
as a voting member on the Board of Directors.
For the Maine Wood Carvers to survive, we need more active Chapters in more locations
around the State. The Maine Wood Carvers can help grow small carving groups by listing
meeting times and locations in the newsletter and on the website, but we have to get them
involved with the Association first. The 10 member number may have made sense at one time,
but it doesn't seem to now. I propose that we change the number of members required to five
(5) vice ten(10).
Please make your opinions on this issue known to your Chapter Representative (or Director at
Large if you are not a member of a Chapter). An email will be sent to all Chapter Representa-
tives with a reply by date before the deadline for next months newsletter.

"We had our first meeting on October 14th at 2 pm. There were three people there; Sally Abraham-
son, Lucile Morgan, and me. We discussed the formation of the Guild, agreed to have a second
meeting on November 11th at 2 pm. Lucile said that she had two additional people interested in
joining. Sally invited me to the Son's of Norway meeting in November she feels that there may be
some folks there that would be interested in carving with us. More next month."

Christmas ornaments for the" Fezztival of Trees" are due at this months meeting. (the 11th). This is how we pay for the use the hall for seminars.
There is a special meeting of the lodge that evening, and they wish to display these pieces at that time.

MWCA CHAPTER REPORTS Coastal Carvers
Coastal Carvers Meeting Oct. 28th 13 In Attendance Old Business: A new home was found for our prize winning Boatyard display....it went to the South Bristol Elementary School. All were very pleased to get it. New Business: The Christmas Party was discussed. A date of Dec. 9th was suggested. More details to follow. Note: OUR NEXT MEETING WILL BE NOV. 18TH DUE TO THANKSGIVING. Be prepared to carve. Show-n-tell was postponed today (except for Carols' Halloween wood burning since it was so timely) to allow Richard Spear more time for Relief Carving display and instruction. This was held along with refreshments until our meeting was over. Thank you so much for your instruction

Poland Spring Carvers
Since two of our officers where not present and the
other two officers balked at conducting the meeting,
our meeting was very short to say the least (meeting
will come to order/meeting adjourn). We had
the usual regulars plus three new guest. Tom, Toni,
and Heidi. Many questions were asked and
answered with the hope that they would return.
Hope that you all have a good month and see you in
December.

On The Border Carvers
Fall is here again and here in the county the foliage is as beautiful as it always is. Farmers are about done with the harvest of a fair crop of potatoes. The group of On the Border Carvers have dwindled . Some have rejoined and I have stress to each member to continue paying dues to the Maine Wood Carvers Association. Phyllis and I miss the gathering in Augusta. It made for a weekend getaway and an opportunity to associate with other Carvers, hopefully somewhere in the future we will return to that meeting. I'm sending three pictures this month.

OCTOBER 2017 Delightful meeting at Bob Perry’s ADVENTURELAND, no cost, good company, good eats! Bob’s terrain has developed over many years with his delightful best friend (and wife) Mariel. It is truly marvelous with such a variety of terrain, elevations, a large pond/bog, pathways through gardens, babbling brook, a covered bridge, and assorted fun outbuildings. We traipsed down a meandering path through the covered bridge to surmise the overstock of large planks of basswood Bob shared with us- he even cranked up the generator and sawed to length if so desired. Downstairs in Bob’s woodworking area we had two large tables to sit and have our meeting, with lots of eye candy to enthrall (Is Bob prolific, or what?). We discussed Camp N Carve which is holding up well but could use some tweaking: We’d like to have six instructors instead of four. Not easy to get non-paid instructors which we are very grateful for! A variety of courses, something for us to consider and discuss each meeting, like maybe Relief Carving, Cypress Knee Carving.... Changing the cost of classes to be a bit more for non-members. Art says don’t forget the Christmas ornaments- deadline this coming Nov meeting! Which will be at the E. Sumner Church again. Bob says bring a picture of something you’d like to woodburn, your wood burner, a piece of Basswood or Birch Veneer works best about 8 x 8 x three eights to half inch thick.
