the PRESIDENTS RAMBLINGS

Greetings All,

Show update: There is a updated show layout in the newsletter. There are some things that will be different this year, due to the smaller space and to make it easier to set up and take down. There is an elevated stage at the back of the hall which is the members carving area. Please plan on bringing something to work on (or pretend to work on while shooting the bull). There is a table at the stage entrance for Chapter info, meeting times, location, contact info, sign, brochure etc. Please note that there will be no food vendor at the show, there are convenience stores and a Dunkin Donuts close by (Ask Jim Irish for the location of the Dunkin Donuts, I have heard that he has been to every location). Or bring your own. The Vendor forms will probably not appear on the website, as folks have already contacted me to reserve spots and most are gone. Hurry if you want one. MDI will be in attendance, if you have any special requests, give them a call before the show and save yourself some shipping charges. Just a reminder, set up will be on Friday, August 10th at 1PM, so anyone available is welcome to help.

There are 3 goals for this years show. 1.Make enough profit to recover the cost of the show. 2. Promote the Art of Woodcarving and the Maine Wood Carvers Association. 3. Get together and have fun.

MWCA CHAPTER REPORTS Streaked Mt. Wood Carvers

Streaked Mt. Wood Carvers Submitted by Sheri Fowler

MAY 2018 Six in attendance to another enjoyable meeting: Bob Perry continued with Knife Guard class. He related Camp N Carve class in Cypress Knees by Sally Abramson is confirmed. For sure Steve Hatch will be demonstrating Turning. More teachers needed! We enjoyed non-sinful Devil Dogs and wicked good homemade whoopie pies by Justina. Steve Hatch is recovering well from knee replacement. In a few weeks he and Justina will doing their summer thing in Kingfield, and encouraged us to visit this reasonably priced beautiful small campground- Deer Farm Camping, that there is always wood chips flying. Steve is also giving Knotty Woodworkers another shot. It is up on Facebook, so drop a message there if interested. Dirigo High School first Tuesday of the month, 6:00 - 8:00. Or contact Steve 207-320-0144. Bob suggested for a group project a “Friendship Cane” which is made of drilled blocks that fit on the cane spindle- each of us can do our thing, be it carved, burned, wood block print-ed, etc. Steve Hatch has all the blocks cut, sanded and drilled for our next meeting.

Coastal Carvers Coastal Carvers Meeting 5/19

Attendance: 13 Old Business: Reminders; Dick Shryock 5/26/18 and Poland MWCA Show 8/11/18 New Business: It was voted to skip Junes Meeting and meet in Sept. Karen will have a get together at her camp this summer...details to follow (if you don't get her notice please call). Show-n-Tell: Richard N. made 3 feather pins out of his last months project; Dana had 2 feathers ready for wood burning today; Andy shared two antique birds he had purchased; Gary finished his cedar narwhal and had it mounted; Karen carved a mini cotton wood bark out house like her neighbors; Ralph did a scratch board print of the Mary E. sailing vessel; Gordon shared information on his box of feathers he brought in and noted how the bluebird and blue jay feathers didn't have color of their own but reflected color; Carol shared a picture of a feather drawn with a silver rod. Refreshments were next Andy finished leading us in the 2nd half of the feather project. How to wood burn the detail in. Thank you so much for all you did for this project. Have a great summer and keep carving. Respectfully Submitted, Barbara W.

This month was rather disappointing in the participation of members in our meetings and our Falmouth Tricentennial Festival. both of our meetings had only two or three members show up. I understand that as the weather improves there is competition between carving and out-door activities. So with that in mind, weather permitting, we are going to try holding our meet-ing out in front of the Rockler Store. That should give us more exposure and some fresh air. On Saturday, May 26th we participated in the Falmouth Tricentennial celebration at the Fal-mouth Community Park, despite the off again on again showers throughout the day over 1000 people were estimated to have attended and seemed to be having a good time, There were a couple of dozens of exhibitors for various social service agencies as well as a group of living history folks demonstrating crafts of the 18th and 19th century. The also had a large musical tent with different performers throughout the day and a large Rock Climbing Wall and bounce pads. Thanks to Jim Irish and Sally Abrahamson for staffing our tent and playing a major role in setup and clean up. We had quite a few people stop by to view our work and learn about our August show.
