Introduction to Video PostcardsShort video postcards from weird and wonderful places around Australia. Discover new places or create your own postcard about a place you want to share.A great postcard doesn’t just say, ‘Wish you were here’, it tells a story about where you are, what you’re doing and what is special or interesting to you.

A video postcard captures the essence of a traditional postcard but transforms it for the digital age and allows you to share your story with more people. It can also be a simple way to connect with people and places across the country.

Pick a place that’s special. It might have a great story, or be a part of the world you’ve been going to for years.

Or you could make your postcard about a great experience you’ve already documented in video.

This introduction to Video Postcards workshop will take place over three hours.

Workshop structure: About Video Postcards (40 mins), Brainstorm your Postcard (20 mins), Filming your postcard (Camera work 60 mins), Storyboards (20 mins), Homework: Using your storyboard, film your locations before the next workshop.

When: 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM 24 February 2013. Where: Muswellbrook Library, 126 Bridge Street, Muswellbrook, NSW. Access at rear via ground/below ground level

Places are limited to no more than 5 participants. Register your with Anthony Scully (ABC Open Hunter region producer) on 4922 1205 to reserve your place in this or to arrange subsequent workshops.

Movie Review: The WordsThis is a great story starring Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Irons, Dennis Quaid and Zoe Saldana.Rory Jansen (Bradley Cooper) lives in New York with his girlfriend, Dora (Zoe Saldana). Whilst holidaying in Paris, Dora presents Rory with a gift – an old brief case from an antique store. He finds a story that reaches back through time to post-war Paris. Jansen is a writer but struggles to get anything published, so he decides to hand the book in as his own. Initially he attains much success, but then his world starts to tumble when “The Old Man” who is played by Jeremy Irons reveals himself as the true author and that the story was based on his life in Paris.

It is a searching story of love against the tragic cost of success and the choices we make that change our lives forever.

It is definitely a movie to see. Civic Video Scone Rating 4/5

Movies to look out for in March are Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2, Taken 2 and Skyfall.

Baby Alive – Real Life DollsBy Caitlin Andrews

From the soft baby hair to 3D skin in tones of a newborn right down to the legs and feet, the real life like dolls Samantha McLean creates are just like a real baby. The Muswellbrook woman has a passion and a talent of creating dolls that resemble a new born baby - just days old.

Samantha first started to learn the art of reborning in 2005, but after a break to fulfil study and work commitments, re-started in 2010 with what she hopes will soon become her business.

Due to studying a Bachelor of Nursing at the University of New England and working three jobs, it usually takes Samantha about four weeks to complete a whole doll; however she said some people have the time to spend a solid day on completing the process.

Her business, My Little Favourites Nursery, is a hobby she has loved ever since she bought a reborn doll from the Ashton Drake Galleries in 2003.

Growing up with a mum who used to make porcelain dolls, Samantha has always liked dolls and has undertaken tutorials with experienced artists, as well as online to improve her talent.

And the attention to detail is applied over the whole doll – whether it is sleeping or awake, dark skin or light, even to creating the hair using a technique called ‘micro root’.

Samantha said she uses mohair produced by Slumberland Nursery as it is incredibly soft, just like real baby hair.

“I paint their eyebrows to match the hair and hand root the eyelashes to create lovely natural newborn lashes,” she said.

Dolls from My Little Favourites Nursery can be custom ordered and you can find pictures and information on the dolls on Samantha’s Facebook page. Alternatively visit twitter@sammybabyblue or email [email protected]

Original Artwork to be RaffledNight Garden by Marguerite McDonald 2002 oil on hardboard. The Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre fundraising raffles were reinstated in 2007 with the prize of an original artwork in oils by the former Arts Centre Manager Bruce Tindale. That first raffle was won by a local Upper Hunter resident and since then the prizes have included many works by local artists such as drawings by Andrew Davis and Max Watters, photography by Roger Skinner and lithography by Hanna Kay.

The latest raffle breaks with this trend by offering as the prize an oil painting by Marguerite McDonald, who at the time of executing the work was an art teacher at Mudgee High School. The work entitled Night Garden was exhibited in the 2002 Muswellbrook Art Prize and when Marguerite moved on to the Wilcannia Central School she left the painting with the Arts Centre to be used for future fundraising.

Night Garden presents a surreal scene of fantastic plants in an imaginary garden that is rich in imagery. While the work is reminiscent of John Tenniel’s original illustrations for Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ the painting also has a uniquely Australian feel for landscape, particularly in the colour palette utilised and in the way in which the surrounding forest is depicted in the upper left hand corner of the work.

Appropriately the raffle will be drawn at the opening night of the 23rd Muswellbrook Art Prize at 6.00pm on Saturday 23rd March 2013. In the meantime Night Garden can be viewed at the Arts Centre and raffle tickets are available at $5.00 per ticket or 5 for $20.00 from the Centre.

Make Your Wish CountDonateLife Week is Australia’s national awareness week to promote organ and tissue donation and is led by the Organ and Tissue Authority as part of the Australian Government’s National Reform Agenda to increase organ and tissue donation rates. It will take place from Sunday 24 February to Sunday 3 March 2013.During DonateLife Week, the organ and tissue sector will be holding a range of events to encourage Australians to set time aside during the week to talk about organ and tissue donation.

You can register your 2013 DonateLife Week events using the DonateLife Week Event Registration form and send it to [email protected]

Organ and tissue donation transforms lives. One donor can transform the lives of up to ten people and significantly improve the lives of many more.

Many Australians do not know that less than two percent of people will die in hospital in the specific circumstances where organ donation is even possible – although many more people can become tissue donors. The majority of people are more motivated to decide about becoming an organ and tissue donor when they learn how few people can actually become organ donors.

So that is why we all need to talk about it during DonateLife Week, and why we all need to decide whether we want to become an organ and tissue donor.

All Australians are asked to discover, decide and discuss organ and tissue donation in DonateLife Week so that their family can make their wish count, should the situation arise.

Jesse Vee on the RiseBy Sophie Fitzgerald

Home grown and doing us proud, Tamworth local Jesse Vee has been making it in the music industry at only twenty years of age. Following in his distinguished family’s footsteps, the budding, young talent began singing at the age of ten, before picking up the guitar two years later. Jesse’s debut gig was with his first band at Tamworth’s well-known Imperial Hotel, where they wowed the crowd in a ‘Band Search Competition’. With father, Mike Vee, well known for his ‘Whispering Jack’ show and his sister Amy, known internationally for her original music, Jesse is predicted to be just as successful.

With a modern choice of music and an enthusiastic personality, Jesse is the ideal entertainer at any venue with rave reviews from his previous functions. Remember this name because the already popular Jesse Vee is on the rise and we will no doubt be seeing a lot more of him in the future.

Music goers can catch Jesse’s performance this Saturday night 23 February at Scone’s Belmore Hotel.
