As Jesus moves towards Jerusalem, he speaks with a sense of great urgency to the crowds who come to him. Time is short. Jesus’ message to the crowd is, ‘Don’t think this couldn’t happen to you.’ There was a tendency to see the hand of God behind such sudden, apparently haphazard disasters, and so to think that those caught up in these events were being punished for sin. In this way some could be thinking, ‘This couldn’t happen to me. They deserved it.’ Jesus warns against such complacency. The parable of the fig tree reiterates this teaching. Time is running out. Today is the moment of choice. The ‘time is short’ message is not meant to frighten us with thoughts of death, but to urge us to live authentically. Live fully. Live each moment purposefully. Are we people who choose life, or does life just happen to us? Jesus often taught using parables, such as the one in today’s Gospel. The point of a parable is that some comparison is being made between the image in the story and the life of Jesus’ listeners. Paul also uses comparisons as a teaching technique. Today, speaking to the community at Corinth he reminds them of the experience of the Israelites in the Exodus. They passed through the waters of the Sea, they were guided by the pillar of cloud; they were fed by the manna and yet, in spite of all these signs of God’s lavish care, they all died; so be warned. Like the people in Jesus’ time, and the Corinthians, living Christian faith does make demands that go beyond an hour on Sunday. In all the choices we make, about what we buy, how we live and how we vote, we are to be guided by Gospel principles of ‘love of God and neighbour.’ Are we living a rigorous Christianity that stands for principles of social justice, respect for all, tolerance towards others with a special regard for those most vulnerable in our society? What are our values really? How much do Gospel values impinge on the choices we make. These questions may help depth our Lenten time of metanoia. We are at the half-way point of the Lenten journey. THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT/C READINGS: Exodus 3:1-8, 13-15; 1 Corinthians 10:1-6, 10-12

GOSPEL: Luke 13:1-9

Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Parish

Guided by the Holy Spirit, we aim to be an evangelising, faith-filled parish whose members care for one another and are welcoming and inclusive.

Sixteen-year-old Peter goes to a boarding school in the Solomon Islands which has experienced water shortages for 60 years. Previously students would have to walk kilometres each day in search of clean water. This was particularly challenging for Peter who is living with a disability. Peter’s mother left the family when he was little and has since passed away. His father decided to move from northern Malaita to Honiara, to better provide for his family. He arranged for Peter to stay with his aunt, then attend Aligegeo Secondary School.

Groundwater sources at the school have dried up and rainfall is unpredictable. Water in surrounding wells often made students sick or gave them rashes. Caritas Australia and partners Caritas Solomon Islands (CASI) and the Solomon Islands Government Rural Water Sanitation and Hygiene division (RWASH), have teamed up with the school to tackle the problem. CASI provided a 90 kilo-litre water tank, electric pump and technical advice, while the Malaita Provincial Government contributed labour. Staff and students took part in training, dug trenches and are helping with a water management plan. The school now has a safe, reliable water system, servicing around 1,000 people. “Now we can stay at school to wash and not interrupt our official class time,” Peter says. Peter hopes to focus on his education and to help others in future by working for an aid and development agency himself. However much more needs to be done to improve access to reliable water and sanitation in the Solomon Islands.

Time’s running out

The Lenten theme of repentance (metanoia) is the central teaching of today’s Gospel.

They passed through the waters of the Sea, they were guided by the pillar of cloud; they were fed by the manna – and yet, in spite of all these signs of God’s lavish care, they all died; so be warned.

This week take some time to reflect on your choices and the direction in which you want your life to go. Choose while the choice is still possible. Time’s running

out.

LLL/Share Our

World

At our last meeting, we looked at the Cathol ic Social Teaching of Preferential Option for the Poor and Vulnerable. We are reminded that as Christians, we are challenged to look at the world from the perspective of the marginalised and to work together for justice. Some suggestions include: Giving generously to Project Compassion;

PRESENTATION OF THE CREED

This weekend, at 7.00 am, St Bernard’s Church and 8.30 am, St Catherine’s Church the Elect - Barbara,

Lewis and Jason - will be presented with the Creed.

Who presents the Creed? The whole community does!

As the ELECT stand and LISTEN to the Creed, what will they hear? A rush of jumbled words? A slow deliberate presentation of the Creed we all profess? Kevin and Sally who are baptised will

stand with us and present the Creed to our Elect.

Please keep our Elect - Barbara, Lewis and Jason - and Candidates Kevin and Sally, in your prayers as they journey

towards acceptance into the Church and full Initiation at Easter.

Collect goods or food to donate to Charity; Learn about products that we buy, how they are made, by whom and under what conditions; Write letters or express concerns to government representatives on treatment of poor and vulnerable; Pray for those most in need.

No one can do everything but we all can do something.
