Section B [15 marks]Answer all questions in this section in the space provided.

16. (a) Define capacitance of a capacitor. [1]

(b) Explain the effect of dielectric on the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitors. [2]

(c) An isolated charged parallel plates capacitor of capacitance 20.0 µF is filled with adielectric of dielectric constant 10.0 and is charged by a battery of e.m.f. 12.0V as shownin Figure 1 below. The dielectric is then pulled out from the capacito r until half only halfof the space is filled with the dielectric as shown in Figure 2.

(i) Calculate the new capacitance of the capacitor. [2]

(ii) Calculate the final potential difference across the capacitor. [2]

Section C [30 marks]

Answer ANY TWO QUESTION ONLY from this section in your own answer sheets.

18. (a) Explain what is meant by drift velocity of free electrons in a metal conductor. [1]

(b) (i) A potential difference of 2.00V is supplied to a constantan wire of l ength 60.0 cm anddiameter 0.400 mm. If the resistivity of constantan is 5.00x10 -7 Ωm and the density of freeelectrons in constantan is 4.00x10 28 m-3 , calculate the drift velocity of free electrons in theconstantan wire. [4]

(ii) Owing to heating effect, the temperature of the constantan wire increases, explain theeffect on the drift velocity of the free electrons. [2]

(c) In the circuit below, E1= 6.0 V, E2 =5.0 V, E3=4.0 V, R1 =100 Ω and R2= 50 Ω

(i) Find the current in each resistor. [6]

(ii) Calculate the potential difference between a and b. [2]

19. (a) Define magnetic flux density. [2](b) A charged particle travelling with a speed of 1.00x10 6 m/sec enters a magnetic field of 0.0500

T. The particle is deflected as shown in the diagram below, and travels in a circular path ofradius 20.0 cm.

vo

(i) State whether the particle carries positive charge or negative charge. [1] (ii) Determine the specific charge (ratio of q/m) for the particle. [3]

(ii) If an electric field is applied to the same region with the magnetic field, the chargedparticle will travel through the region without any deflection. Determine the direction andmagnitude of the electric field. [3]

(c) (i) Account for the production of a Hall voltage when a thin strip of a metal conductor, carrying a current, is placed in a magnetic field. [3]

(ii) A flat copper ribbon 0.330 mm thick carries a steady current of 50.0 A and is located in auniform magnetic field of 1.30 T directed perpendicular to the plane of the ribbon. If a Hallvoltage of 9.60 μV is measured across the ribbon, what is the charge density of the freeelectrons? [3]

20. (a) Define magnetic flux linkage. [1] (b) State the laws of electromagnetic induction. [2]

(c) A square coil of side 5.00 cm lies perpendicular to a magnetic field of magnetic flux density 4.0 T asshown in the diagram below. The coil consists of 200 turns of wire and total resistance of 5.00 Ω.

(i) What is the magnetic flux linkage cutting the coil? [1]

If the coil is rotated about its axis of rotation through an angle of 90o in 0.200 seconds.

(ii) Calculate the magnitude of the average e.m.f. induced in the coil while i t is being rotated.[2]

(iii) Calculate the magnitude of the induced current flowing in the coil. [1](iv) What is the direction of the induced current in the coil. Explain your answer qualitatively.

[3] (v) Calculate the amount of heat dissipated in the coil. [1] (vi) If the coil is rotated continuously with a frequency of 50 Hz, determine the root mean square

current produced in the coil. [4]
