Who wouldn’t want to join Charlie Bucket in his adventurous tour of Willy Wonka’s world-famousChocolate Factory? Now is your chance! In a joint venture, Uppingham School’s boarding Houses Johnson’s and New House come together to bring to life the characters of Augustus Gloop, VioletBeauregarde, Veruca Salt, Grandpa George, Grandma Georgina, Willy Wonka and Charlie himself. All involved will discover the true meaning of teamwork, self-confidence and self-esteem.The delicious fun of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory awaits you!

Inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus (251-183 BC), the musical play tells the bawdy story of a slave named Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door. Unfortunately (as the two find out when they pay a visit to Lycus), Philia has been sold to the renowned warrior Miles Gloriosus, who is expected to claim her very soon. What will they do next? Will a happy ending prevail for all? The plot displays many classic elements of farce, including puns, the slamming of doors, cases of mistaken identity (frequently involving characters disguising themselves as one another), and satirical comments on social class.

Uppingham School’s Lower School Drama Society presents this play based on the novel by George Orwell which is an allegory in which animals play the roles of the Bolshevik revolutionaries and overthrow and oust the human owners of the farm, setting it up as a collective farm in which, at first, all animals are equal. However, class and status differences soon emerge between the different animal species. The play depicts how a society’s ideologies can be manipulated and twisted by those in positions of social and political power; a definite must see!

Borodin Polovtsian Dances from Prince IgorShostakovich Piano Concerto No. 2 in F majorTchaikovsky Symphony No. 2 in C minor, “Little Russian”

Ben Zhang, Imogen de Csilléry and Casey Lim Piano

Richard Smith and Andrew Webster Conductors

Uppingham School Symphony Orchestra return with an exhilarating programme of music from Russia. Borodin’s brilliantly colourful Polovtsian Dances light up the concert opening, followed by Shostakovich’s mischievous Second Piano Concerto, performed by three talented student pianists.

Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony harnesses the folk-songs of Ukraine – affectionately known as ‘Little Russia’ – in a reverential expression of romanticism, with memorable melodies brought to the fore in this ultimately optimistic and highly successful work which brings the concert to a close.

Students from Uppingham’s String Faculty entertain with a range of solo and small ensemble works. From well-known masterpieces to charming new arrangements, and an appearance from Uppingham’s Guitar ensemble, there’s something for all musical tastes in this eclectic and inclusive showcase.

Boldly going where none have gone before, Uppingham’s Junior and Senior Concert Bands blast off on an epic adventure through space, time and film scores.

With TV and film favourites including Star Trek, UFO and John Williams’ iconic score to Star Wars, plus galactic greats of the concert hall from Holst’s The Planets, Also Sprach Zarathustra and I Believe I Can Fly, you’re sure to leave feeling out of this world!

Based on the classic children’s book series by David McKee, that celebrates its 30th birthday in 2019, Elmer the Patchwork Elephant Show is a celebration of individuality and the power of laughter!

Elephants, as everyone knows, are big, have trunks, and are grey. But Elmer is a patchwork of brilliant colours! His fun-loving and cheerful personality keeps everyone in a playful mood, until the day he gets tired of being different and tries to blend in with the herd.

Elmer The Patchwork Elephant Show, featuring a menagerie of 21 loveable puppets, tells the tale of an elephant that stands out – both with his patchwork-coloured skin and his sense of humour – but ultimately realizing that his friends have always valued his unique characteristics.

The show’s subtle message that it is always best to be yourself, combined with the vibrant colour and cheeky humour of the main character, makes Elmer a great show for children of all ages.

For Ages 1+

Following Rutland Musical Theatre’s sell out run of ‘Guys and Dolls’ in April 2018, they are proud to present their next production, the newly released ‘Legally Blonde – The Musical’!

A smash hit on Broadway and the West End, this award winning musical tells the story of the popular and pink loving sorority sister, Elle Woods. With little more than her good looks and 4.0 average in fashion merchandising, she enrolls at the Harvard Law School in an attempt to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner Huntington III. Armed with her trusty pooch Bruiser, Elle soon transforms as she tackles stereotypes, snobbery and scandal. Both hilarious and heart-warming, this musical is so much fun it should be illegal!

With music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin and book by Heather Hach, ‘Legally Blonde – The Musical’ is based on the novel ‘Legally Blonde’ by Amanda Brown and popular 2001 film of the same name starring Reese Witherspoon.

We begin our concerts of 2019 with a lesser-known but rather glorious Parody Mass by Monteverdi, which draws its musical motivic inspiration from a six-part motet by the much earlier Franco-Flemish composer Nicolas Gombert. We pair the mass and its parody motet with other settings from the Franco-Flemish school by Josquin and Adrian Willaert, whose texts all begin with the same opening words: In Illo Tempore ‘At that time’.

A group of teenagers do something bad, really bad. They panic and decide to cover the whole thing up. But when they find that the cover-up unites them and brings harmony to their otherwise fractious lives, where’s the incentive to put things right? DNA is a poignant and, at moments, hilarious tale with a very dark heart. Shoes Off Theatre Company presents a dynamic and innovative production of this much loved Dennis Kelly classic. Directors Clare Rayner and James Holroyd subtly thread Frantic Assembly physical theatre with gritty realism.
