August 22, 2017 Speaker Review By Michael Kelly

Lisa Brinkmann, Executive Director of Marin Villages, spoke to us about an organization that is relatively new, one that we may not have been aware of--until now! About fteen years ago community meetings and discussions led to a consensus that older ("aging") people prefer to live at home and remain independent in their own communities as long as they are able. The problem is, as Lisa pointed out, a lot of oldsters are living on xed incomes or have various issues and problems that prevent them from utilizing community services or participating in activities that they enjoy. Two Marin County Civil Grand Jury reports--one in 2006-07 and one in 2013-14--found that Marin County is one of the oldest and fastest aging counties in the state and that therefore, "something has to change." Eight years ago something changed. Marin Villages was founded in 2009 and began serving older adults in 2010. Currently there are two Villages in Marin County: Marin Villages and Sausalito Village. The Villages' community now has around 700 mem-bers and volunteers, and the goal was always to "address the gaps in services and activities many seniors in our communities need. With the core mission of helping older adults remain independent, active and connected in their own homes and communities, organizations like these Villages rely heavily on the time, energy and skills of local volun-teers," says Lisa. Volunteers are key to the Villages. It would be dicult to list all the kinds of services the volunteers provide and perform. They are serious about giving back to the community. Here's a brief list of some of the things volunteers do: provide transportation to appointments and events; they assist with technol-ogy issues; they assist as companions; they do handyman tasks; they visit and go for walks; they do chores; they organize, help with paperwork, and even de-clutter. They assist with pets. They encour-age socializing and life-long learning, search for services and professional resources--Whatever they can do to help make Marin an age-friendly place. Volunteers are one thing. Money is another. An individual membership to Villages costs $365 per year or $450 for households. Lisa emphasizes that it's easy to become a volunteer. Marin Villages has a web-based "dashboard" that provides volunteers

with 24/7 access to requests for assistance. Volun-teers can review and accept requests, receive task details, and get a conrmation, thanks to technol-ogy. And as Lisa points out, "The Journal of Geron-tology stated that older adults who engage in volunteering report higher levels of well being." Lisa reports that Villages gets about 500 calls per month for assistance, and they have an 85% to 90% fulll-ment rate. The average volunteer spends about 3 to 4 hours per month "doing a lot of little things" that mean a lot to Village members. I forgot to mention that volunteers do not get paid and must undergo background checks, and some volunteer training is required. Oh, and volun-teers can also be Village members! From what Lisa presented to us, I saw an all-around good deal for everyone involved. Villages is indeed a high impact organization. Their watchwords are: "Stay Active, Stay Connected, Stay at Home." You can get all the information you need at marinvillages.org and 415-457-4633. They are a 501(c) (3) nonprot and, obviously, donations are welcome. Thanks, Lisa for familiarizing us with this important resource! --MJK

2. A tour of the Pinball Museum suggested by Lee Turner, but understand you will be standing most of the time. Lee comments were that he was not prepared to be impressed, but as he got into it, he increasingly liked it and stayed for nearly 2 hours. The machines are laid out in a number of dierent rooms in chronological order. There are a huge number of them which you can play them for as long as you want and they are “free” – but there is an entry fee to get in ($20 discounted to $10 with Group on). But here’s the downside for those with creaky bones with all the standing. However, great for kids of all ages. 3. Pizza in the Piazza at Jacuzzi Winery on the last Sunday of the month from 12 pm – 3 pm. Next dates are Sunday Oct. 29, Nov 26... Treat yourself to lunch in the Piazza! Enjoy wine paired with pizza made fresh in their kitchen with sustainably grown ingredi-ents from Greenstring Farm. Cost is $10 for a slice & glass of paired wine, OR $30 for an 8" pizza & bottle of paired wine.(Tax not included in pricing. Dates may change. Reservations not needed.) Attendees: George Miller, Jake Solomon, Tom Brady, Tim Leveque, Mike Kelly, Doug Twitchell, Paul Schoeld, Will Kaefer, Ned Lawrence, Jim Keiser

Big Sir Report: Tim Leveque attended the annual meeting of the Sirs and reported that membership had declined from 39,000 to 18,000 over several years. Much discussion followed with many suggestions on how to improve the active mem-bership. One problem cited against mass advertis-ing was keeping the branch membership to recommendations by the current members. Each Big Sir was given a few license plate frames with some information about Sirs and these will be discussed at the next lunch meeting. The agree-ment with outside caterers and liability for Sirs was also discussed in great detail.

Little Sir Report: Our speaker for the September 26 lunch meeting will be Ed Addeo. Ed is a resident of Mill Valley and has written many interesting books. He will be discussing his latest book about the history of Yosemite.

Treasurers Report: Our checking balance is $10,667.03 including a decit o of $1156.95 for lunches and wine for birthdays. Dues for2017 have been paid for 104 members.

Committee Reports: Doug Twitchell discussed various members’ status and several members who had been classied as inactive will be removed from next year’s roster book. Several members who have not attended lunch meetings, phoned in to let membership know about their current status, did not respond to phone calls and emails, and have not paid their dues for 2017 have been removed from the inactive rolls. In cases of temporary absences, such as illness or caring for a family member, active members may be moved to inactive status by action of the Executive Commit-tee after conferring with the member when possible. New member Bill Stewart was approved by a vote of the Board.
