As Joe Biden promised the other day, the United States has started aveng-

ing the blood it spilt at the gates

of the Kabul airport. An Islamic State “planner”

was taken out in a late-night drone strike, the US military said in a statement.

“Initial indications are that we killed the target. We know of no civilian casualties,” the statement said, referring to an overnight drone strike.

The statement, however, didn’t say if the target had any connection to the airport attack.

However, a US official, speak-ing on condition of anonymity, said, the drone strike was against an Islamic State militant plan-ning attack.

“A reaper drone, which took off from the Middle East, struck the militant who was in a car with an Islamic State associate. Both are believed to have been killed, the official said.

International Architecture Bi-ennale in Venice, Italy, opened doors yesterday.

Bahrain Authority for Cul-ture and Antiquities President Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa opened the pavilion.

The pavilion reflects Bah-rain’s urban development ef-forts, the revival of its cultural

memory, projects to preserve historical buildings and mod-ern works that retain the orig-inal urban features.

Bahrain is taking part in the Biennale Architettura 2021 for the sixth time in a row.

In 2010, the Kingdom’s pa-vilion won the Golden Lion Award. The team in charge of the pavilion includes Nora Al Sayed, Heritage Consultant Ghassan Al Shamali and the BACA engineering team.

Bahrain-European association rejects “baseless” accusations by British MP TDT | Manama

The Bahrain-European Association for Social Networking yesterday

categorically rejected the accu-sations levelled against Bahrain by British MP Wayne David as “baseless” and invited him to review and learn about the de-velopments of the Kingdom in all areas, including in human rights.

“Every Bahraini citizen and resident enjoy all their rights in the Kingdom,” the statement said, adding that the Kingdom also requires everyone to abide by their duties towards the state and society, like Britain or any other nations for security, sta-bility and development.

The Association also called on the MP to reach out to the independent rights organisa-tions in the Kingdom for further clarifications.

“The goal of Bahrain’s govern-ment is to serve its citizens and not terrorism, which is killing the world and causing millions of deaths around the world.”

“It is creating hunger, poverty, fell regimes and spread insecuri-ty and wars.”

“This is the inevitable result of those supporting terrorism and calls for releasing terrorists.”

The Association called on Wayne David, Labour MP of Caerphilly, to respect relations with Bahrain before interfering in its internal affairs to defend someone convicted of terrorism

charges. The MP’s actions, the Associa-

tion said, is an explicit violation of international and United Na-tions efforts to combat terrorism and drying up its sources.

The MP who should be deal-ing with matters concerning his nation, the Association said, is rather engrossed in interfering in the internal affairs of other countries without understand-ing what he is talking about.

“The statements by the MP, in it entirely, have its focus on the accounts of fugitives, rather than facts,” the Association said.

Before moving against a coun-try having close ties with Britain and resorting to politicise rights issues to serve narrow interests, the MP should see what the

laws of both countries say about crimes ranging from murder, rape and harassment.

The Association also pointed out that the British Ambassa-dor, Roddy Drummond, during his visit to the Correction and Rehabilitation Centre in Jaw, described it as a “transparent” initiative.

“I was pleased to visit Jau prison on 3 May with other Ambassadors. We were shown a well-run facility, with good medical provision and meas-ures against Covid, with vacci-nations offered to all prisoners. I welcome this initiative by the authorities to be more trans-parent,” Drummond wrote on his twitter account following the visit.

Drone strikes near Nangarhar province(Continues from page 1)

US Central Command said the strike took place in

Nangarhar province, east of Kabul and bordering Pakistan.

Residents of Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar, report-edly heard several explosions around midnight. There, how-ever, is not clarity on what caused the blasts.

In Jalalabad, community elder Malik Adib said three people were killed and four were wounded in the airstrike at around midnight on Friday, adding he had been summoned by the Taliban investigating the incident.

“Women and children are among the victims,” said Adib, though he did not have infor-mation about their identity.

A senior Taliban commander said some ISIS-K members had been arrested in connection with the Kabul attack. “They

are being interrogated by our intelligence team,” the com-mander said.

The White House said the next few days were likely to be the most dangerous of the US evacuation operation that the Pentagon said has taken about 111,000 people out of Afghani-stan in the past two weeks

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the United States believed there were still “spe-cific, credible” threats against

the airport after the bombing at one of its gates.

“We certainly are prepared and would expect future at-tempts,” Kirby told reporters in Washington. “We’re mon-itoring these threats, very, very specifically, virtually in real-time.”

The US Embassy in Kabul warned Americans to avoid Ka-bul’s airport because of security threats, and those at its gates should leave immediately.

Evacuees from Afghanistan arrive for processing at Naval Station Rota, Spain

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Oman, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Humood Al Busaidi, arrived in Bahrain yesterday for the seventh session of the Bahraini-Omani Joint Committee, which will convene today. The Mumtalakat Holding Company yesterday wel-comed a decision by the

transitional government of Su-

dan to reinstate an agricultur-al investment deal signed with Bahrain after Sudan’s Northern state declared cancelling the agreement.

Earlier this week, the com-missioner of the Investment Commission in the Northern State in Sudan, Bushri Al-Tayeb, announced cancelling the li-cense awarded to Bahrain for the Khayrat Al Bahrain project, which spans 420 square kilo-metres of area in Al Dabbah lo-cality. However, Sudan’s tran-sitional government decided to reinstate the deal after talks with the Kingdom.

Mumtalakat thanked the Min-istry of Foreign Affairs in Bah-rain and Sudan for cancelling

its decision to revoke the license granted to Bahrain.

“We are keen to invest in food security projects based on eco-nomic feasibility and consider-ing logistical and supply factors.”

The project in Sudan, the company said, faced logistical and technical issues related to its location, the impact of the Coro-navirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and political developments in Sudan. “Since taking responsi-bility for investing in the land of Khairat Al Bahrain, we had sought to complete a strategic study necessary to implement the project, despite the challeng-es it faces.”

The project was also the first investment by Mumtalakat in

agriculture outside Bahrain. The 42 thousand–hectare in-

vestment land was granted to Bahrain by the Sudanese Pres-ident Omar Hassan Al-Bashir.

According to the agreement signed in June 2013, the land is for agricultural, livestock and fodder investment. The value of assets in it was more than $200 million.

Following the deal, in 2017, Mumtalakat established Khairat Al Bahrain Holding Company (Khairat) for the unique agricul-tural project in Sudan.

The project, which encom-passes the establishment of a commercial farm, according to Mumtalakat, is located in the world’s richest expanse of

groundwater (the great Nubian Sandstone Basin).

Close ties “The decision reflects the

depth of the close ties between the two brotherly countries,” said Dr Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani, the Minister of For-eign Affairs, recently. Dr Al Zayani also praised the efforts of Maryam Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sudan, in reinstating the deal.

The minister also said that Mumtalkat is in the process of completing a comprehensive study that includes the “Khayrat Al Bahrain” project in Sudan, in line with its objectives and investment vision.

Proposal for Bahrain-Brazil livestock investment forum

A proposal to organise an investment forum focus-

ing on the livestock sector in Kingdom had come up during a top-level meeting held yes-terday.

Such an investment forum, Dr Khalid Ahmed Hassan, the Undersecretary at the Ministry of Works for Animal Resourc-es, and Bahraini Ambassador to Brazil, Badr Abbas Al-Hulai-bi, said would encourage Bah-raini and Brazilian companies to plan joint ventures.

Bahrain, Dr Hassan said, is encouraging companies to invest in the livestock sector and facilitate their work in co-ordination with countries to launch joint investments.

He also called for more co-ordination with the Brazilian authorities and companies wishing to invest in livestock production in the Kingdom.

The meeting further mulled the possibilities of encourag-ing cooperation with Brazil in animal breeding, import and

export of livestock, red and white meat, and veterinary medicine.

The officials also proposed creating a protocol through the Ministry of Foreign Af-fairs to regulate cooperation between Brazil and Bahrain in economic and veterinary fields.

Works Ministry, Dr Hassan said, is keen on encouraging foreign investments to achieve food security and taking ad-vantage of modern technology and techniques to increase an-imal production.

Achieving sustainable food security, Dr Hassan pointed out, requires focusing on many areas. “These includes increas-ing animal products (poultry and eggs), using modern tech-nology, such as industrial in-telligence, investment in agri-cultural lands in countries that are politically and economical-ly stable and possess natural resources to provide fodder, in addition to diversifying food sources.”

Wage Protection System: Phase 2 starts Wednesday• The first phase covered 85 employers and 93,000 workers

The second stage of Bah-rain’s wage protection system will come into

force, starting this Wednesday, said Labour Market Regulatory Authority Chief.

The first phase of the system, launched in May, Jamal Abdu-laziz Al Alawi said, was well-re-ceived by employers.

“As many as 256,200 workers are benefitting from the system, from its first two phases,” said the Chief Executive Officer of the LMRA.

Phase 1, launched according to a Cabinet resolution and in

line with Edict 22/2021, en-sured employers’ commitment to paying wages as agreed on time.

“The first phase of the sys-tem covered 85 employers and 93,000 workers,” said the LMRA chief, adding that they are in touch with companies and in-stitutions to ensure wage pay-ments, especially during the grace period granted at each stage.

The second phase is for em-ployers with 50 to 499 employ-ees, or 1,328 employers and 163,000 workers.

“So, LMRA achieved a con-

formity rate of 46%, even before its official beginning,” said Al Alawi.

LMRA, he said, is facilitating all procedures required for join-ing the system, including al-lowing employers to open bank accounts for their employees at CBB licensed banks without vising LMRA.

The Wage Protection System has an electronic linkage involv-ing CBB, LMRA and the relevant financial and banking institu-tions. Payment statements reach LMRA monthly, enabling it to verify private institutions’ com-mitment to paying wages.

The list of banks and financial institutions that deliver Wage Protection System-related ser-vices are available on the LMRA website.

Employers, LMRA Chief said, may join the system and pay their employees through it, even before the beginning of their prescribed stage.

Quick facts Stage One, which came into effect on the 1st of May 2021, was for employers with 500 employees or more.

Stage two, which starts this Wednesday, covers employers with 50 - 499 employees.

The third and final stage, which comes into play on the 1st of January 2022, matters employers with up to 49 employees.

The system grants employers a grace period of six months at each stage to address any potential obstacles in joining the system.

Works ministry to oversee BD1 m Mubarak Kanoo Social centre project TDT | Manama

agreement to manage the con-struction of the Mubarak Kanoo Comprehensive Social centre project with Yusuf bin Ahmed Kanoo Company.

Essam Khalaf, the Minister of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, signed the deal with Khalid Mohammed Kanoo, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Yusuf bin Ahmed Kanoo Company.

The BD1 million project, fund-ed by Yusuf bin Ahmed Kanoo Company in Sanabis, is coming

up on 4,700 square meters of land.

The project is affiliated with the Ministry of Labour and So-cial Development.

As per the deal, Works Min-istry will supervise the imple-mentation of the project and ensure that the construction works comply with local and international standards.

The three-storey building will have a hall for celebrations, a so-cial day club for parents, space for productive families, social research, family counselling, social assistance, childhood and family services, and incubators for productive families.

Major General Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, the Inspector General of the Ministry of Interior, paid an inspection visit yesterday to the Northern Governorate Police Directorate. He was received by Brigadier General Issa Hassan Al Qattan, Director General of the Directorate and a number of the Directorate’s officers. Inspector General listened to a briefing that included the tasks carried out by the Directorate and its police stations to maintain public order and security.

One thing that the pandemic has changed forever is our workplace. Whether you are a doctor or a teacher, a student or a banker or minister, the words “Work From

Home” took on new meaning and the dynamics of every pro-fession was touched.

In the midst of all the churn, there was a surge of innova-tion among small and medium enterprises, especially home-based entrepreneurs who used the WFH protocols to establish themselves. One area that flourished is that of home catering. Working women burdened with new responsibilities as classroom aide to kids and extended work hours, found it easy to outsource the daily kitchen chores. This has come along with an upsurge of interest in traditional Bahraini cuisine as well as experimental fusion culinary food.

Not surprisingly, since food is some-thing that affects public health, the gov-ernment has been especially vigilant about how to handle this sector. They have carefully tracked and licenced food trucks, for example, so that all hygiene requirements are met and the movement truly “mobilises” foodpreneurs.

Similarly, I think it is time that we helped home chefs to maximise their commercial potential. Already, the gov-ernment has granted clear licencing rights to this sector. However, if we are to regularise and strengthen the rising tide of interest in our culinary heritage, we should facilitate access to modern kitchens. Cloud kitchens have swept the world of food and beverage offerings and Bahrain cannot afford to be far behind in implementing this new workplace arrangement. Simply put, cloud kitchens will help foodpreneurs standardise their hygiene and resource requirements and focus on the taste factor of their food. They represent the business end of the food show and we must get that particular show on the road sooner rather than later to stimulate our food scene.

I hope our lawmakers and our entrepreneurs are listening.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Bahrain (AmCham Bahrain) an-

nounced electing new Board, officers following its recent election at its virtually held An-nual General Meeting.

Qays Al Zu’bi was unan-imously re-elected for a new two-year term.

Commenting on the election, Zu’bi said, “We will continue to extend AmCham’s contribution to promoting US-Bahrain’s trade growth, while also promoting the legitimate economic inter-ests of AmCham members.”

US Charge’ d’ Affaires, Mag-gie Nardi, said: “The strength of the US-Bahrain bilateral re-lationship rests on free trade and shared prosperity, and AmCham plays a pivotal role in promoting new business and investment opportunities for American, Bahraini, and other international companies.”

The US-Bahrain Free Trade Agreement also marks its 15th anniversary this year.

To mark this milestone, Am-Cham, in cooperation with the US Embassy, local associations, and other government bodies will highlight the shared eco-nomic success the FTA has al-lowed.

Bilateral trade of goods be-tween Bahrain and the US has more than tripled from $782 million in 2005 to $2.46 billion in 2019.

Zu’bi said, “The impact of COVID-19 made 2020 a chal-lenging year for global trade and businesses everywhere. Bi-lateral trade of goods between

the US and Bahrain decreased 38% from $2.46 bn in 2019 to $1.52 b in 2020, but I have faith the trade between the US and Bahrain will return to past high levels and increase to new highs going forward.”

On AmCham’s objectives, Zu’bi said, “key to our objectives these coming two years is to continue to help our members navigate emerging challenges and opportunities. To do this, we will launch industry focus groups for our members to iden-tify, discuss and pursue com-mon interests regarding their sector and businesses.”

This newly formed Board is AmCham’s most diverse and

representative Board since the organisation was formed in 2005. The directors repre-sent all major industry sectors in Bahrain, including finance, manufacturing, oil & gas, edu-cation, ICT, tourism, real estate development, logistics, commu-nications, legal & professional services. The Board is evenly balanced between American and Bahraini companies, large multinationals, and SMEs, re-flecting AmCham’s mission to increase bilateral trade and commercial opportunities. Ad-ditionally, nearly 40% – 6 out of 16 seats – are held by women, and 7 of the 12 elected directors are new to the Board.

Abu Dhabi bourse to halve trading commissions, second cut this year

The Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX) said yes-

terday it would halve its trad-ing commissions to 0.025% from 0.05% from Sept. 1, the exchange’s second commis-sion cut this year and the third in three years.

Both ADX and Dubai Finan-cial Market (DFM), in sepa-rate statements, also said they

would extend trading hours by one hour from Oct. 3.

The trading hours exten-sion should bring ADX into line with the operating hours of many exchanges globally, it said, part of moves to bolster market activity and to deepen market liquidity.

DFM said the move would attract wider and more di-v e r s i f i e d c a t e g o r i e s o f investors.

US regulators probe Peloton over treadmill injuriesReuters

Peloton Interactive Inc said on Friday US regulators

were investigating the compa-ny, adding to the exercise bike maker’s woes as it deals with a backlash over reports of acci-dents involving its treadmills.

The US Department of Justice

and the Department of Home-land Security have subpoenaed the company for documents and information over injuries from its exercise machines, the company said in a filing with the US securities regulator. Pelo-ton recalled its Tread+ product in May, just weeks after saying there was “no reason” to stop

using the exercise machine de-spite reports of the death of a child and multiple injuries.

Its public disclosures related to the reports are also under investigation by the US Securi-ties and Exchange Commission, Peloton said.

Chief Executive Officer John Foley publicly apologised in

May for Peloton’s initial re-sponse to the accident reports, and the company also laid out steps to improve on safety.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission, which in April had warned about the dangers of the Tread+ tread-mills, is already investigating the injuries.

The Taliban will announce a complete cabinet within a week, and it will include

not just ministers but leaders as well, group spokesman Zabihul-lah Mujahid said yesterday.

The group appointed governors and police chiefs in 33 out of the 34 provinces in the country.

“It is difficult to anticipate whether women will be part of the cabinet in Afghanistan. The final decision will be taken by top leaders on the issue,” Muja-hid said.

After the Taliban seized con-

trol of Afghanistan on August 15, they launched a charm offensive to rehabilitate their image. The group promised amnesty to gov-

ernment employees and soldiers and vowed to protect the rights of women.

Activists and local journalists,

however, say the reality on the ground is quite different, with many concerning reports of home searches and arrests of the very people the Taliban said they would not retaliate against.

Women activists and former female political leaders say they expected to be treated as second class citizens at best.

The spokesman said that Kabul airport will be under the Taliban’s complete control “very soon”.

“We have enough security and technical staff to operate Kabul airport,” Mujahid said.

The group had said on Friday they took control of sections of the airport evacuated by Ameri-cans, which the Pentagon denied and said the Taliban are not in charge of any gates or airport op-erations, stressing that it was still under US military control.

Turkish and Qatari media have reported that the Taliban asked each of the two countries for help running Kabul airport.

But Mujahid told Reuters: “It’s a bit too early to decide whether we will need Turkey or Qatar’s help to operate Kabul airport.”

The Taliban spokesman also appealed to the West to maintain diplomatic ties with Afghanistan. This comes at a time when the White House said the US and its allies were in no rush to recognize the Taliban government.

Modi hails India’s 10 mln COVID vaccine doses in a single dayReuters | New Delhi

India administered more than 10 million COVID-19 vaccine

doses on Friday, a national re-cord that Prime Minister Nar-endra Modi hailed as a “mo-mentous feat” for the country ahead of fears of another surge in infections.

India has now administered about 628 million vaccine doses in total, giving at least one dose to more than half of its 944 mil-lion adults and the required two doses to 15%. The government wants the entire adult popula-tion covered by December.

“Record vaccination numbers today!” Modi said on Twitter. “Crossing 1 crore (10 million) is a momentous feat.”

The previous daily record was 9.2 million.

India’s vaccine production has jumped this month, thanks mainly to the Serum Institute of India that is now making about 150 million doses a month of its version of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The sharp rise in vaccina-tions came as India reported more than 40,000 new infec-tions for a second consecutive day on Friday.

Cases had fallen to a five-month-low of 25,166 in the mid-

dle of the month but have risen sharply in the last three days, mainly in the southern state of

Kerala which recently held a large festival during which fam-ilies typically come together.

India reported 44,658 new COVID-19 infections on Friday, taking the total to 32.6 million, the most in the world after the United States. The death toll rose by 496 to 436,861.

“Any laxity in ensuring a strict adherence to the five-fold strategy of test-track-treat-vac-cinate and ensuring COVID ap-propriate behaviour, may result in a further surge in COVID-19 transmission in Kerala and its neighbouring states,” the health ministry told the Kerala state government in a letter shared with journalists.

Bangladesh ferry accident kills at least 19, many missingReuters | Dhaka

At least 19 people were killed and dozens were

missing after a boat packed with passengers slammed into a vessel transporting sand in the latest waterways tragedy to hit Bangladesh.

“We have so far recovered 19 bodies,” said Anisur Rahman, chief police official in the east-ern district of Brahmanbaria, where the accident occurred.

The dead include nine wom-en and two children, he said, adding: “The rescue operation for those missing is ongoing.”

Police officials said they did not know the exact number of people missing, but passengers

said more than 50 people had been on board, while district administrator Hayat Ud Dow-lah Khan said some of those swam ashore or were rescued.

Hundreds of people die each year in ferry accidents in Bangladesh, a low-lying country that has extensive in-land waterways but lax safety standards.

Iraq’s security has improved in recent years but it is still plagued by heavily armed mi-litia groups.

Iraq’s Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said during a news conference that Iran and Sau-di Arabia, which began direct talks in Iraq in April, were continuing their meetings and hoped for “positive results”, but gave no further details.

Organisers of the Baghdad summit said they did not expect any diplomatic breakthroughs.

Heads of state attending included Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, King Ab-dullah of Jordan, Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and Macron. Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates sent their heads of government, and Turkey its foreign minister.

Macron was due to stay an extra day, meet Iraqi leaders

and visit French special forces fighting Islamic State insur-gents.

Iranian officials have said they are focused more on the outcome of talks in Vienna with Western powers over Iran’s nu-clear programme and interna-tional sanctions.

“The meeting in Iraq ... is only focused on Iraq and how the re-gional countries can cooperate to help Iraq,” an Iranian offi-cial said ahead of the Baghdad summit.

Iran-backed militias have

launched increasingly sophis-ticated drone and rocket attacks against US forces stationed in Iraq, and also fired drones at Riyadh.

Ahead of the summit, UAE Vice-President Sheikh Moham-med bin Rashid al-Maktoum met Qatar’s al-Thani and de-scribed him as a “brother and friend” in a sign of warming ties.

Bobby Kennedy’s assassin Sirhan granted parole

The man convicted of shoot-ing dead Robert F. Kenne-

dy in a 1968 assassination that rocked the United States was granted parole Friday.

Sirhan Sirhan, now 77, has been behind bars for five dec-ades -- despite doubts that he fired the shots that likely changed the course of US pol-itics.

Kennedy, the younger broth-er of slain president John F. Kennedy, was campaigning for the Democratic nomination when he was gunned down in a Los Angeles hotel.

His murder came just months after the killing of Black civil rights leader Mar-tin Luther King Jr, and as a divided America was deep in an unpopular war in Vietnam.

Sirhan was convicted and sentenced to death in 1969 af-ter pleading guilty.

His death sentence was commuted to life imprison-ment several years later.

But doubts soon surfaced that he was actually responsi-ble for Bobby Kennedy’s death, with claims that there could have been a second gunman in the Ambassador Hotel on June 5, 1968.

Kennedy had given a speech at the hotel after winning Cali-fornia’s Democratic presiden-tial primary.

On a walkabout in the kitch-en where he met staff, he was shot, as were several other people in his entourage, among them Paul Schrade, who took a bullet to the head.

Schrade, along with Kenne-dy’s then-14-year-old son, have

since campaigned for Sirhan’s release, saying the evidence against him does not stack up.

“It is a good decision,” Schrade told AFP on Friday.

“I’m really grateful to the parole board for giving Sirhan the chance to go home.”

The vote on Friday by a two-person panel of the Cal-ifornia parole board does not mean that Sirhan will auto-matically be released.

The decision is subject to a three-month review, and then ultimately passes to state Gov-ernor Gavin Newsom, a Demo-crat who faces a recall vote in September.

During Friday’s hearing, Kennedy ’s youngest son, Douglas, spoke in favor of Sir-han’s release, media reports said, adding that Robert F. Kennedy Jr had sent a letter of support to the parole board.

Robert F Kennedy Jr told The Washington Post in 2018 that he had visited Sirhan in the California desert pris-on where he was serving his sentence, and had become convinced that an injustice had been perpetrated.

US Gulf Coast residents flee ‘extremely dangerous’ Hurricane IdaReuters | Washington

Hurricane Ida yesterday strengthened and the reach

of its winds expanded over warm Gulf of Mexico waters, prompting tens of thousands to cut short vacations and jam Louisiana high-ways.

Forecasters said it could make a US landfall as an “extremely dan-gerous” Category 4 storm on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale, generating winds of 140 miles per hour (225 kph), heavy downpours and a tidal surge that could plunge much of the Louisiana shoreline under several feet of water.

Yesterday morning, Ida was about 435 miles southeast of Hou-ma, Louisiana, packing top winds of 85 mph and tracking toward a late Sunday landfall, the National Hurricane Center said.

“We’re concerned about explo-sive development shortly before it makes landfall,” said Jim Foerster, chief meteorologist at DTN, which provides weather advice to oil and transportation companies.

“It’s going to be moving over some warm water,” he said.

Flooding from Ida’s storm surge - high water driven by the

hurricane’s winds - could reach between 10 and 15 feet (3 and 4.5 metres) around the mouth of the Mississippi River, with lower lev-els extending east along the adja-cent coastlines of Mississippi and Alabama, the NHC said.

Officials ordered widespread evacuations of low-lying and coastal areas, jamming highways and leading some gasoline sta-tions to run dry as residents and vacationers fled the seashore.

Utilities were bringing in extra crews and equipment to deal with expected power losses from the storm. Hundreds of thousands of homes could fall dark as Ida’s strong winds carry well into Lou-isiana and as far east at Mobile, Alabama, said DTN’s Foerster.

The Taliban condemned the recent US drone strike tar-

geting ISIS in eastern Afghan-istan, a group spokesman said yesterday.

“The Americans should have informed us before conducting the airstrike. It was a clear attack on Afghan territory, two were killed, and two women and a child were wounded in the at-tack,” a Taliban spokesman told Reuters.

The US conducted a drone strike that killed two high pro-file ISIS targets and wound-ed another, the Pentagon said yesterday.

The strike comes in retaliation for Thursday’s suicide bombing which targeted Kabul airport and led to the deaths of dozens

of Afghans and 13 US servicemen, and wounded scores more.

The Pentagon said ISIS-K was

behind the attack, and the ex-tremist group later claimed re-sponsibility.

Two people died after receiv-ing Moderna Inc COVID-19

vaccine shots that were among lots later suspended following the discovery of contaminants, Japan’s health ministry said yes-terday.

The men in their 30s died this month within days of receiving their second Moderna doses, the ministry said in a release. Each had a shot from one of three manufacturing lots suspend-ed on Thursday. The causes of death are being investigated.

Japan halted the use of 1.63

million Moderna doses shipped to 863 vaccination centres na-tionwide, more than a week after the domestic distributor, Takeda Pharmaceutical Co, received re-ports of contaminants in some vials.

“At this time, we do not have any evidence that these deaths are caused by the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine,” Moderna and Takeda said in a statement yesterday. “It is important to conduct a formal investigation to determine whether there is any connection.”

The government has also said no safety or efficacy issues had

been identified and the suspen-sion of the three Moderna batch-es was a precaution.

Fumie Sakamoto, the infection control manager at St. Luke’s International Hospital in To-kyo, cautioned against drawing a connection between the shots and the fatalities reported yes-terday.

“There may only be a temporal relationship between vaccina-tion and death,” Sakamoto told Reuters. “There are so many things we still don’t know to make any conclusions on these two cases.”

The contaminants found in

some vials in Japan are believed to be metallic particles, public broadcaster NHK reported, cit-ing health ministry sources.

Robinson strikes as England level India series

England thrashed India by an innings and 76 runs to win the third Test at Headingley yes-terday with more than a day to spare.

Over the last few months, Amin “Fierceness” Ayoub

and Ahmed “The Butcher” Amir have built an ongoing rivalry. The banter between the two mixed martial artists extended far outside the cage.

However, Ayoub wasn’t the original speck in the eye of Amir as the Egyptian bruiser wanted revenge on Cleiton “The Pred-ator’’ Silva, whom he shared a bloody history with when they fought at BRAVE CF 11 in April 2018.

Silva walked out of the grue-ling encounter with his hand raised in triumph, defeating Amir by way of second-round stoppage. More than a year af-ter their encounter, the Bra-zilian captured the BRAVE CF Lightweight World Title at the expense of compatriot Luan Santiago.

When Silva was slated to make his first defense against Ayoub at BRAVE CF 44 in No-vember 2020, Amir made a scene during the weigh-ins and issued an expletive-filled chal-lenge.

But things didn’t go according to plan as Silva bowed to Ay-oub via fourth-round knockout. With the Frenchman now hav-ing the silver-plated strap in his possession, Amir targeted the

newly-minted champion. From there, it escalated

quickly as they went back-and-forth on social media and in in-terviews.

Both Ayoub and Amir had the chance to settle their beef with each other at BRAVE CF 50 this past April, but the latter was on the receiving end of an unfortu-nate news as he needed to pull out of the bout due to a neck and shoulder injury.

As a result, Mashrabjon Ruzi-boev stepped in and took Amir’s place to face Ayoub in a non-ti-tle, 74-kilogram catchweight contest, where the French champion came out triumphant via unanimous decision.

Ayoub was in the middle of

his celebration when Amir sur-prisingly came out of nowhere and engaged in a heated verbal exchange. Though security and officials inside the venue were able to ease the tension, it is far from over between the two.

Amir was in attendance for the historic BRAVE CF 53 in Al-maty, Kazakhstan last August 21 and talked about Ayoub’s most recent performance.

“Bad performance! I don’t like the idea that he’s holding the title and he showed a bad per-formance like that. BRAVE CF is a big organization, and his level is not for someone who should be holding a title,” he said.

Amir is not the only fighter who wants a piece of Ayoub

as Ahmad “Shadow” Labban seized the moment to call out the champion after stopping Virgiliu “The Iceman” Frasineac in the first round of their super lightweight clash at BRAVE CF 52: Bad Blood last August 1st.

“I’m improving, I’m getting better and better and I’m ready for a fight in particular. I’ve already challenged you twice, Amin Ayoub, and you keep running away like a coward,” Labban stated in his post-fight interview.

Bahrain’s senior men’s na-tional football team have

kicked off their latest local training gathering at the Ham-ad Town Club premises.

The nationals are gearing up for a pair of international friendly matches over the next week and a half, which are part of their preparations for their upcoming competitions includ-ing the FIFA Arab Cup this De-cember.

Head coach Helio Sousa su-pervised the start of training with a team of 23 players.

There was a last-minute change to the squad list, with Mohammed Abdulwahab of Al Ahli Club replacing Abdulwa-hab Al Malood of Muharraq, who suffered an injury during a league match last week.

The tournament is being de-livered by FIFA as a prelude to the FIFA World Cup 2022. It is seen as a vital opportunity to test operations and facili-ties ahead of next year’s global showcase.

Belgian Grand Prix pole yes-terday, snatching the fastest time in qualifying from sur-prise package George Russell of Williams.

Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes will start on the second row as he goes for his 100th Grand Prix win, Daniel Ricciardo’s McLaren completing the sec-ond row.

Qualifying was marred by a heavy crash in Q3 involving the McLaren of Lando Norris, whose hopes of a first ever pole bit the dust at Eau Rouge.

With the Briton thankfully escaping serious injury, nine cars took to the track when the shoot-out resumed after a 40-minute red flag interven-tion.

Fellow Briton Russell was poised to give Williams an as-tonishing first pole since 2001 with seconds of Q3 to go.

But the young driver’s bril-liant time was narrowly shad-ed by Verstappen in the Dutch driver’s final flying lap.

Russell still had the satisfac-tion of placing in front of Ham-ilton, with Russell in contention alongside Valtteri Bottas for the second Mercedes drive in 2022.

“I’m absolutely buzzing,” said the Williams man.

“Tomorrow’s the most im-portant one, but it’s been mega today. I’m delighted for every-one. If the weather is the same and it’s there for the taking, we’ll go for it.”

Norris’ team came over the radio asking “Lando, are you okay, are you okay?” with the shaken, but seemingly un-harmed, driver replying “Yes, Sorry boys we should have had a good one. I’ve let you down.”

The medics then helped him gingerly out of his cockpit.

The session was red-flagged as stewards hurried to clear the debris from the stricken McLaren off the track. Norris’ mechanics were set for a long night getting it roadworthy in time for Sunday’s race.

A McLaren statement on Twitter reported: “Lando is currently undergoing checks at the trackside medical centre.”

Norris, third in the drivers championship, had led qual-ifying through the first two sessions held as the rain beat down on the majestic but no-toriously demanding Spa-Fran-corchamps circuit in the Ar-dennes Forest.

The Bahrainis booked their seats with a resounding 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-16) victory over the UAE, while Saudi had their own dominant win against their Ku-

waiti counterparts, also with a 3-0 (25-17, 28-26, 25-15) score line.

Bahrain and Saudi are set to face off tomorrow for the tour-nament title. The UAE and Ku-wait will battle for the bronze medals.

In Bahrain’s semi-final game yesterday, the nationals did well to quickly take the first set and

in the second fought back from some early resistance from their opponents to take the 2-0 lead. They then came up big to com-plete the three-set sweep and fittingly closed out the match with a service ace.

They were too good attacking the net and were solid defensive-ly with their blocks, living up to their tag as favourites to march

on to the gold medal game.With the result, the Bahrai-

nis maintained their unbeaten record in the tournament so far.

The hosts are coached by Bra-zilian tactician Leandro Kakaro-to, and they are in the compet-ing in the championship with a young but talented roster that includes Hussain Al Ihsan, Has-

san Alawi, Hussan Abdulredha, Ali Habib Alarab, Sayed Hashem Issa, Youssef Mansour, Sayed Ahmed Murtada, Ali Abdulma-jed Al Bosta, Hassan Al Warqa, Ali Hussain Ahmed, Sadiq Jaafar and Sayed Hashem Falah.

Today is a rest day. Tomor-row’s bronze medal game will get the final day’s schedule un-derway at 5pm, followed by the

title contest at 7pm. Bahrain defeated Saudi in four sets in their first meeting during the preliminary round.

Only four national teams are taking part in the competition, following the withdrawal of Qa-tar and Oman.

Fans are allowed to attend the matches with strict guidelines in place at the venue.
