Summer 2016 President’s Message by: Pam Pozderac Hager, [email protected] Dear ASH Friends, We marked the anniversary well … “ASH Girls and their Pearls - A Celebration of 80 Years” was the theme of the annual ‘winter formal’ in February. Crowds cheered for ASH during the annual Homecoming Parade. And throughout the past year, at every event, we celebrated the accomplishments of the thoughtful and caring alumnae who in the early 1930’s started a campaign to support women who wanted, but could not afford, to attend college. Their efforts to establish the first ASH house and their spirit of paying it forward continue as we support the Fechko, Hanley, and Pomerene Houses and move beyond eighty years of Alumnae Scholarship Housing. We also celebrated and honored those of you who have supported ASH students more recently, including Dottie Wilker who received an Alumni Association Award for her more than 20 years of volunteer service to students, and Elaine Buerkel for her incredible gift to the 2015-16 women of Fechko House. Caring, generosity, and a spirit of paying it forward continues to be a hallmark of ASH women, as can be seen by the Scholarship and Advancement Committee reports. Please consider adding your gift to a new or existing fund - the ripple it will create is unimaginable and the total effect on the next generation and our world will never be known. Check out the ASH Society website and look for email and facebook invitations to upcoming Society events. We will continue to reach out to you and hope you will join us for one of the art, athletic, life-long learning, volunteer, or other social activities we are planning for ASH Alumnae. Reconnect and keep in touch. You’ll be glad you did! As always, you are invited to visit and meet the current women of ASH when we welcome them back to campus in August and to join us for Reunion/ Homecoming Weekend 2016. It will be just a short walk from the RPAC to the stadium if you are going to watch the Buckeyes take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the stadium. Finally, mark your calendars now for the ASH Annual Banquet in the spring – Sunday, March 26, 2017. You are invited! It is always a wonderful evening and I would love to see you there. Dottie Lee Wilker, OSUAA Josephine Sitterle Failer Award for Volunteer Service to Students

As an alumni association staff member and then as a volunteer, Dorothy “Dottie” Lee Wilker has been a constant and invaluable force behind Ohio State’s Alumnae Scholarship Housing (ASH)program.

Over the course of its long life, ASH has provided low-cost housing to more than a thousand undergraduates. Currently, about 50 women each year live and work together on campus in a cooperative environment that allows them to grow academically and personally.

When Wilker joined the alumni association in 1986 as director of student programs, coordinating the ASH program was among her many responsibilities. Nominator Elaine Edgar, who served on the ASH advisory board, met her during that time. “She was professional, extremely knowledgeable and helpful,” Edgar wrote. “She willingly gave up many evenings and weekends for meetings and student and alumnae events.”

Wilker joined the advisory board after she retired in 2000. “She went above and beyond what is expected of a board member,” Edgar wrote. When the advisory board and the ASH alumnae group merged to form the Alumnae Scholarship

Housing Society in 2012, Wilker spent countless hours reviewing the bylaws of other societies, setting up processes and coordinating timelines and communications. “Dottie’s perspective always focuses on the benefit to students and their well-being,” Edgar wrote. “She gives thoughtful suggestions and solid advice.” Wilker continues to work behind the scenes with ASH, doing everything from hosting students at her home and planting flowers to editing newsletters and preserving the history of the organization.

Nominator Pamela Hager, president of the ASH Society, wrote that early in Wilker’s career, when she was teaching at a school near an airport in Heath, Ohio, she used to watch the planes overhead and dream of learning to fly. She went on to earn a private pilot’s license as well as instrument and commercial ratings. “I couldn’t wait to break through those clouds and see the sun,” she told a newspaper interviewer last year.

Thanks to Dottie Wilker and her work with the Alumnae Scholarship Housing program and other groups, many Ohio State students have broken through the clouds and achieved their own dreams.

“I’ve always wanted to do what I could to give back. As I’ve said many, many times, if it hadn’t been for the scholarship house and my scholarships, I would not have been able to go to school.” -Elaine K. Buerkel

Elaine Buerkel (’60, ’64) learned to budget in the ninth grade, a skill that has allowed her to generously give back to Ohio State and dramatically change the lives of the Alumnae Scholarship House (ASH) residents. In 2012, she established the Elaine K & Monica Buerkel Alumnae House Scholarship Fund in memory of her sister. It provides one ASH resident with a full room-and-board scholarship. In 2015

Buerkel and her sister, Joyce, established the ASH Fechko House Scholarship Fund, which provides all 18 Fechko House residents with full room-and-board scholarships for the 2015–2016 academic year.

Buerkel chose to attend Ohio State for its home economics department, which was ranked No. 2 in the country at the time. After hearing about the ASH program, she interviewed with Bland Stradley — then the university’s vice president of student relations — and was accepted to live in Davisson-Hanley Scholarship House. She lived there all four years except for her last quarter, when she did her student teaching. “I liked the scholarship house because, coming from a small town, it felt like a family setup.” Buerkel now hopes that the girls who receive her scholarships feel like they are part of a family and that they are able to give back someday.

Over the years, Buerkel has given far more than monetary support. During her years as a teacher, she sewed draperies for Davisson-Hanley Scholarship House and for Mary Pomerene Alumnae Scholarship House. Fechko House

is currently decorated with beautiful draperies and cushions that she sewed.

Buerkel’s talents and generosity are deeply appreciated by anyone who steps into the scholarship houses. She has made a lasting impact on the lives of Ohio State students and serves as an inspiration for what it truly means to give with your whole heart.

Built on a Foundation of Giving Back: The Alumnae Scholarship House Family

“It would have been pretty tough to actually stay at Ohio State because of how much it costs. Just being able to be here was an amazing experience, I didn’t expect to get a scholarship with it; I just thought I’d have to pay less.”- Paige Danford, first year

“The fact that I have this opportunity to live in this house, and the fact that Elaine has provided that opportunity is completely a blessing. I really want to do something like what she has done. I really want to help the future students who are going to be in this house.”- Kelsey Esterline, second year
