Usage Instructions:

Hengro PoolProtect Pool Epoxy Coating

Please read the following instructions in their entirety before you start to paint. Failure to do so may jeopardize the success of your painting project and will render the manufacturer’s warranty null and void.

1. All Hengro Epoxy product variants (including PoolProtect Pool Epoxy Coating) are delivered in twin-pack format.

2. You should have a tin that is labeled ‘Hengro Epoxy Coating [Color]’ and another tin that is labeled ‘Hengro Catalyst/Activator Clear’.

3. Hengro Epoxy paints are delivered in either 5 liter or 20 liter metal tins.

4. You should have the same number of tins of both parts of the paint – one tin of catalyst/activator for each one tin of colored base. Both tins should be the same size. Do not open the tins yet.

5. Hengro PoolProtect Pool Epoxy Coating should only be applied to a clean pool surface that has no other paint coating that is coming loose, on it.

6. Should there be any other paint coating, material or residue on the pool surface, it will separate from the pool surface, causing the Hengro epoxy coating to come off as well.

7. Please ensure your surface has been completely cleaned of dust, oil, grease and/or marblelite or

previous paint coatings, ensuring that the surface is as close as possible to its raw state BEFORE applying Hengro Epoxy Paint.

8. To properly clean your swimming pool of any previous coatings (including marblelite), use an industrial strength (200Bar/3,000Psi) high-pressure cleaner and water. These may be rented from most tool hire companies. Please take care when operating this machine to prevent personal injury.

9. It is recommended that the pool also be given an ‘acid wash’ prior to coating. Use undiluted swimming pool acid with a stiff nylon brush, making sure to clean every single cm² of the pool surface to be painted. Wash off the acid afterwards with water. It is also recommended that protective clothing (gloves, goggles and aspiration mask) be worn when working with swimming pool acid.

10. The pool surface should be completely dry, with no water or any other liquid on it, prior to coating.

11. Hengro PoolProtect Pool Epoxy Coating can be applied to any good concrete, cement or fiberglass pool. .

12. Please make sure that you have one tin of Hengro catalyst/activator for each tin of Hengro colored base, both of the same size.

13. Please shake BOTH tins well before opening them. 14. When you open the tins, you will notice that they are

not full to the top. This is the way it is intended to be, so that the contents of the tin of clear catalyst can be added to the tin of colored base, to provide a full tin of paint.

15. After opening the tins, stir the tin of colored Base well and ensure that all the bottom particles are stirred up and no sediment is left on the bottom of the tin.

16. Next, add the clear Catalyst (Activator) to the colored Base and mix the two parts together (either in a bigger tin/drum or in the tins provided).

17. Constantly stir the combined mixture consisting of the Activator and Base for 15 minutes (until no more light colored ‘streaks’ appear on the top surface of the paint). The mixed paint will appear to

be very thin (low viscosity) – do not be alarmed, as this is normal.

18. Place the tin/drum with mixed paint in a hot place (ideally in the sun outside or in a heated room) to cure properly (keeping in mind that Hengro Epoxy Paint can be applied at temperatures ranging from 12°C to 35°C, but is at its optimum at 18°C to 22°C at 50% relative humidity).

19. Let the tin/drum with paint rest for 45 - 90 minutes depending on the ambient temperature: - 45 Minutes for warmer areas / warmer days. - 90 Minutes for cooler areas / cooler days.

20. You will see that the paint’s viscosity (thickness of the paint) will increase as it warms. The paint should be left to stand until it reaches the consistency/thickness of dairy/pouring cream – do not let it stand for too long, as this may lead to the paint hardening in the tin before it is painted out. Hengro will not take responsibility for paint that has been allowed to harden before it could be painted out.

21. After the paint has rested for the specified time, stir it again for 10 minutes, after which the paint will be ready for application.

22. Hengro PoolProtect Pool Epoxy Coating is best applied with paint rollers equipped with extended handles, so that the person applying the paint can comfortably do so while standing erect, without having to exert pressure on the roller.

23. From the time that the two parts of the paint are added together, you have 4 hours to paint, before the paint starts getting hard in the tin. Therefore only ever mix as much paint as you can apply within 4 hours. A maximum of two tins at a time is recommended.

24. Please use good quality brushes and rollers. For the best finish we recommend good quality sheep-wool rollers.

25. First coat/Primer coat: the surface may shine through (paint will appear semi-transparent as Hengro Epoxy Paint is a self-priming paint) but there is no reason for worry.

26. Second coat: best applied 12-24 hours after the first coat has been applied. However, in warm conditions the second coat may be applied as soon as 4 hours after first coat, as soon as the first coat is tacky. After

the second coat is applied, the surface will be covered and sealed completely.

27. Spread rates: Hengro PoolProtect epoxy coatings is designed to be applied at a final / effective spread rate, when applying two coats, of 3 – 4 square meters per liter of paint, depending on the roughness and absorbency rate of the pool surface that is painted on.

This means that:a. First / Primer coat: you should cover roughly 30m² to 40m² per 5 liter, or 120m² to 160m² per 20 liter of paint; b. Second coat: you should cover roughly 30m² to 60m² per 5 liter, or 120m² to 200m² per 20 liter of paint; c. PLEASE NOTE: it is not unusual (depending on the nature of the pool surface being painted) to use MORE paint during application of the first / primer coat (up to two thirds of the total paint to be used), and less during application of the second coat (the second coat spreads wider, as it is applied to the smoother and harder first coat).

28. Do not apply too much pressure on the roller while applying the paint. Apply with moderate pressure, using a smooth, spreading action. If too much pressure is applied to the roller, it may negatively affect the overall cosmetic finish of the painted surface (it may produce roller marks and streaks on the surface - this will, however, not compromise the strength and longevity of the epoxy coat).

29. When applying the paint with your roller, submerge the roller in the paint to saturate it with paint. Paint the surface by applying moderate pressure to the roller. Before submerging the roller in the paint again to cover the next area with paint, run your partially dry roller over the most recent painted area to ensure correct blending of accumulated paint that might occur. Hereby you help the layer of paint to be spread more evenly by rolling the partially dry roller for a second time over the most recent layer of paint.

30. Hengro Epoxy Coating needs 7 (seven) full days to be completely cured / dried.

31. If necessary, the painted pool surface may be walked on with bare feet or soft-soled shoes after 36 hours from application of the second code.

SECTION VI – Safety & Precautions

32. Do not add water to the swimming pool before the 7 days drying time has completely passed.

33. Non-adherence to the required curing time will render the manufacturer’s warranty as null and void.

If it rains:

34. If it rains within 36 to 48 hours after applying one of the two coats of paint, the rain may wash out some of the pigment, creating white streak marks and stains.

35. Remove all accumulated rain water from the bottom of the pool as soon as it is possible.

36. If only one coat was painted up to this point, you may simply paint over the second / top coat, covering the white streak marks and stains.

37. If it rained on the second / top coat, you will have to paint over an additional coat to cover the white streak marks and stains.

38. Ensure that the pool surface that is to be painted is completely dry before painting is started.

39. The painted pool will be ‘rain proof’ after approximately 48 hours (i.e rain after that will not be a problem).

40. It is advised that you do not paint your swimming pool on a day that rain in forecasted.

41. The result of rain on the painted surface (washing out of the pigment) will be entirely cosmetic - provided that all accumulated rain water is removed from the pool as soon as possible, so that it can dry normally, it will not compromise the strength of the epoxy coating.

42. Hengro Epoxy Coatings is a solvent-based paint coating, which means that it contains potentially volatile solvents.

43. Although not overtly dangerous, care should be taken in handling epoxy paints in general. Avoid storing the paint in direct sunlight, and do not bring near an open flame.

44. If Hengro Epoxy Paint should land on the skin, there is no immediate danger. Wash it off with water and soap as soon as possible.

45. Take care not to spill Hengro Epoxy Paint where you do not want paint to be, as it may be extremely

difficult, if not impossible (depending on the surface),

to

remove

from

where

it

is

spilled.

IMPORTANT!

PLEASE READ!

- The #1 reason for swimming pool epoxy paint failure is poor cleaning and preparation of the surface to be painted. This aspect is often ignored or overlooked, leading to the paint or the paint manufacturer being blamed if it fails. - Before coating your swimming pool, you HAVE to remove any old or previous paint or marblelite coatings that are coming loose, or may come loose in the future, as well as any other residues on the pool walls and floor (such as suntan oil that may have accumulated over the years, and may be invisible to the eye). - The easiest way to remove old paint and marbelite coatings is to use an INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH high-pressure water cleaner (200Bar/3,000Psi and stronger, may be rented from most tool hire companies), blasting off the old coating or marblelite. - Please take care when using a high-pressure cleaner, to avoid injury. - If your pool does not have any previous paint or marblelite coating to remove, it is advised that you clean the surface with swimming pool acid and a stiff nylon brush. - Please be sure to clean the whole pool. Skipping even a small spot may result in the paint failing in that spot. - Please note that it is easy to determine if the paint failed due to non-adherence to the above, and that Hengro will not take responsibility if that is the case, as poor cleaning and preparation is not covered by the warranty. - Under no circumstances should the pool be filled with water before the 7 day drying time has elapsed. This will lead to failure of the paint, and is not covered by the warranty.
