So much of what great libraries do is about anticipating the future while preserving our connections to the past, about valuing tradition while embracing—and enabling—the potential for surprise and discovery. Certainly, we have experienced all that and more at the USC Libraries in 2010. The Hoose Library of Philosophy celebrated its 80th

anniversary, while in our Accounting Library and Science and Engineering Library, we opened new collaborative and instructional spaces. The Los Angeles Archives Bazaar marked its 5th anniversary—with 750 attendees visiting more than 80 exhibitors who brought the diverse history and stories of Southern California into Doheny Memorial Library. We invited 40 established and rising Latino literary voices to campus for a 3-day reprise of the 1973 Festival de Flor y Canto. Photos and videos of that landmark event are now part of our Boeckmann Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies, which turned 25 in 2010. I invite you to visit www.usc.edu/libraries/engage to discover more about what’s ahead for the USC Libraries in 2011 and beyond—or if you’re a smartphone user, scan the code on the opposite page.

On behalf of all our faculty and staff, I wish you the happiest of holiday seasons.
