Writings of the President Ron Janard

Greetings Lightship Sailors, Members, Friends, The 12th annual reunion in Savannah was a

great success. We had a fantastic time and a large turnout. The weather, southern hospitality and

hotel location were just perfect. The River/Dinner Cruise topped it off perfectly! I would like

to say THANK YOU to all who were responsible and dedicated for making Savannah a

memorable time for all.

As you all know, this was an election year. After 6 years as President, Larry Ryan has

decided not to seek re-election. Bernie Byrnes and Pete Marx have also decided not to seek

re-election. Elected were two new Board members, David Addicott, and Roland Holloway.

Continuing on the board are: Skip Coleman, 1st V.P.; Bob Gubitosi, 2nd V.P.;

Fred Pelger, Treasurer; Dave Orszak, Secretary and Membership; Rick Gryder, Webmaster and

Larry Ryan, Immediate Past President and Staff Advisor; Dennis Cosmos Jr., Past President;

Adrian Van Houten, Chaplain. Elected as President, Ron Janard, LSA Historian.

As President, I shall also serve as Editor and Publisher of THE FOG HORN. The format will

continue, with occasional minor changes. Dennis Cosmos will continue as Chairman of

Graphics Committee.

This year, we were fortunate to have a few distinguished guests. Morgan McKenzie

(a college student) presented her thesis and a slide show about Lightships during the Civil War.

Harlan Emory Sterling (a former lighthouse keeper) along with his stepson, Tom Everett were

quests in the Social Room. Harlan is quite a character, with a very distinguishing background.

The Memorial Service was held alongside the host Hotel, situated on the river.

We would like to thank Cassandra Turrell from ―Bugles Across America‖ and the

Color Guard members: Philip Teakel YN3, Daniel Plukett YN2, Dawn Alston YN2

and Taylor Brickson SN.

Congratulations to our new Members: H. Fritz Heipertz LIFE MEMBER (DELAWARE

67-68) John Annino, James Sinkula, Bruce Rowe, Julian W. Cravin (SAVANNAH/FRYING

PAN/DIAMOND SHOAL 56-61 and Congratulations to Peter Lalik 43rd Life Member

(BARNAGAT 64-67) who won the raffle for the free hotel stay.

During the banquet, Bob Mannino Jr. President of the United States Lightship Museum,

along with his wife Chris, gave a presentation on the LV112 Nantucket, from acquisition, while

docked at Long Island, to its present location in Boston Massachusetts along with his plans for

future restoration and educational purposes.

As in the past, this issue of THE FOG HORN shall be composed of photographs of the official meeting, Memorial Service, and Banquet. A great time was had by all, old and new friendships made. Next year at Cape Cod, We will return to our own Museum, and see its growth since 2008. Bill Collette, President of the Coast Guard Heritage/LSA Museum, present at the Savannah Reunion, is also looking forward to our return in 2011. Please, Do not forget to renew your Membership! The USCG Lightship Sailors Association exists through Membership. As Members of the organization, every one of you are keeping the history of Lightships and the Men who manned them alive! This history must not be forgotten. Ever!

Attention Frying Pan Shoals Light TOWER Crew members The LSA was recently contacted by the new owner of the tower who would like to contact any former crew members. Please call Larry Ryan at 719-440-7280 or you can email me at [email protected] for more information.

were summarized by the 1st Vice President and all were ratified. The By-Laws contain the listing of all changes A copy

will be provided to any member who requests a copy.

The 2011 Reunion site considerations narrowed down a return to the Coast Guard Museum in Barnstable, MA
