IntroductionGeoverse Convert converts many types of point cloud and polygon data into the Unlimited Detail streaming format (UDS) and Unlimited Detail Grid format (UDG) Supported source formats include:

Fully supported: uds, las, laz, bin, e57, xyz, csv, txt, ptx, pts, llargbin, fls, fws Partially supported: ply, obj See Supported File Formats for more details

Expected conversion speed is around 35 billion points per hour for binary data and 15 billion points per hour for text data (1 Million points a sec for binary and 400,000 for text)

NOTE : Geoverse Convert does not currently operate on a 32bit system.

INPUT FILESTo get started simply drag and drop files to convert into the “Input files” area (or use the “Add files” button)

NOTE: Your source data cannot have file names with Unicode characters

OUTPUT TYPEEuclideon Data Set (UDS) The most common output format; creates one UDS file per job upon job completion

Euclideon Data Grid (UDG) Used for very large data sets; creates one UDG file and multiple UDS files in a sub-directory

VERSIONFor Geoverse MDM 11+ Creates files that are compatible with Geoverse MDM 11 onwards

For Geoverse MDM 12+ Creates files that are compatible with Geoverse MDM 12 onwards

Note: Geoverse MDM is backward compatible allowing you to open all the UDS file versions in the latest release

OUTPUT FILESet the name and directory for the output file

USE COMPRESSIONUse this option to further compress output files This will increase conversion time Compression is only available for Geoverse MDM 12+ output files

GEOMETRY UNITSThe geometry units are required to be set to the same unit type as what the input data uses; before converting it is advised to test a small sample first to verify the settings are correct You can export just a small sample of your data by assigning a ‘Maximum Number of Points’

If you register an ‘Existing GIS Projection’ which specifies unit type, it will automatically choose the correct Geometry Unit for you

RESOLUTIONSet the ‘physical’ size for each point; before converting it is advised to test a small sample first to verify you are happy with the settings

DESIRED GRID SIZE (ONLY USED FOR UDG FILES)Specify the desired size of each ‘grid’ Upon job completion each ‘grid’ square will be the dimensions of a separate UDS file

ACTUAL GRID SIZE (ONLY USED FOR UDG FILES)Geoverse Convert will advise of the closest possible matches to the desired grid size; possible grid sizes are always a power of two Please select the closest possible match to the desired Grid size

It is recommended to use a UDS file where ever possible Only switching to a UDG file when the point to data set scale exceeds 1 : 1,000,000 (six orders of magnitude)

Point Size : Data Scale 1mm : 1km

~ Approx 1/16” point size : ~ Approx 1 mile

*(1mm=1x10-3m 1km=1x103m)

It is possible to continue using UDS files for large data sets however users may experience vibrating points when trying to view the data in close detail

Additional Output filesJOB SETTINGS FILE:A Job Settings file with the file name “<InsertJobNameHere>JobSettings” will be saved out for each completed conversion Each file is in ASCII format and the file contains details for that particular job You can drag and drop this file into Geoverse Convert Job List to update or repeat the conversion

JOB LOG FILE:A Job Log file with the name “<InsertJobNameHere>JobLog” will be saved out for each job conversion Each file is in ASCII format and the file contains details for that particular job

Advanced Job Settings

The Advanced Job Settings Control

Before converting, there are some additional advanced settings that can be used Click on the “Advanced” tab to access these

Data ProcessingMAXIMUM NUMBER OF POINTSThis option limits the number of input points that Geoverse Convert will convert If you are converting a large data set, it is recommended to process a small section of data first (ie 1,000,000 points) to ensure that the point size and other options are correct

EXPORT INTENSITYEnabled this option if the source data has intensity values and they will be included in the output UDS file If the source data does not have intensity information the output will be given a value of 0

EXPORT CLASSIFICATIONEnabled this option if the source data has classification values and they will be included in the output UDS file If the source data does not have classification information the output will be given a value of 0 (never classified)

Point GIS TransformPoint GIS Transform enables you to convert the source data from one GIS space to another during conversion This is often necessary if the data is in Latitude/Longitude format as Geoverse MDM requires a Cartesian projection

Existing GIS Projection specifies the source projection of the incoming data (typically WGS84 for Latitude/Longitude) Output Transform specifies the final coordinate system to be used in the

Page 8: User Guide - Meixner Imagingmeixnerimaging.com/wp-content/uploads/GeoverseConvertUserGuide-1.3.0.pdf · Geoverse Convert User Guide Version 1.3.0 Copyrigt 2012-2014 Euclideon Pty

converted file If the data is already in the required projection you can simply specify this field to tell Geoverse products the projection of the data, for example this is typically an EPSG code

For example; if your source data is Latitude/Longitude and is from the East Coast of Australia, you would be using “WGS84” as existing projection and Output Transform as “EPSG:28356”

GIS Transform assumes the data set is Longitude/Latitude; the Reverse XY allows you to input data that is Latitude/Longitude

ColorCOLOR FORMATThe precision of how the data is stored in the final data set Trading size for accuracy

RGB 8 palette is typically fine for most datasets Selecting Grayscale will source the color from the point intensity values and will activate the intensity range options

24-bit RGB

8-bit RGB (Palette)

16-bit RGB

8-bit Grayscale intensity

INTENSITY SCALEIf the source data has only intensity values, these options will specify the valid intensity range to convert to a gray-scale color

The minimum value represent black, and maximum value represents white

Intensity values are sourced in the range of 0 to 65535 (16 bit)

Source data formats that are not in this range are re-scaled to 16 bit

MetadataWATERMARK FILEYou can provide an image file here which will appear as a watermark over your screen when viewed in Geoverse MDM

Images supplied will be rescale to maximum size of 256 x 256

File-specific optionsSome file types allow for extra configuration options When you bring these files into a Job’s Input Files list, a tab will appear with that file’s specific options

LAS/LAZ OptionsLAS COLOR RANGEThe min and max range of the color values to be expected in the file

SWAP 16BIT BYTE ORDERColors with 16bit per channel can be interpreted with the order of the 8bits swapped

GAMMA CORRECTApply a gamma correction to the input colors

OBJ OptionsLIGHTMAPA lightmap is an image used to generate false lighting for converted OBJ files This helps give the converted UDS file a more realistic appearance Geoverse Convert is bundled with a lightmap if you do not have one, it is located inside the directory that you installed Geoverse Convert to

TEXTURE MEMORY SOFT LIMITThis limits the amount of memory (RAM) that will be used to store images during the conversion process

Jobs

The Job List

This panel shows the current progress and status of existing jobs, including detail relating to Status, Conversion Time, Number of Points and Progress bars

It is possible to add and remove jobs, as well as start and stop the conversion process using the on-screen buttons You can cut, copy and paste jobs, as well as add “JobSettings” files from previous conversions

FILE LOGRecords important events, errors and notifications that have occurred during the conversion process If your conversion fails, make sure you check the file log to ascertain the reason

Geoverse Convert Settings

DEFAULT OUTPUT DIRECTORYThe default directory where the UDS / UDG files will be saved for new Jobs

INTERMEDIATE DIRECTORIESDuring the conversion process temporary data will need to be stored before the data is converted to the final format Choose a location for intermediate directory(s) here For a faster conversion we recommended a different physical drive for each intermediate directory

It is recommend too have double the data set size as free space on your selected hard-drive; this will be used for the creation of temporary files during conversion (a 10 GB data set should have 20GB free storage space)
