Project Background
Faculty and tutors found that they
are having difficulty communicating with
hard of hearing and deaf students. The
goal of this project is to design a device that
will allow users to communicate rapidly with
a teacher or tutor using a device that will
allow users to quickly type conversations.

Quick Start Guide
1) Remove device from case
2) Open cover
3) Attach power cord to device and plug into wall
4) Wait for program to start*
5) Once the program has started, enter text into either Professor or Student box. Press enter in order to send the phrase to the conversation box.
6) Press TAB to switch between entry boxes
7) Press F5 to start a new session

* The program does not start automatically at this time. Right-click mouse and select "Terminal". Once the terminal window has opened, right-click again inside of the terminal window. The program should start momentarily.
** The program currently saves the session into the current working directory of the program. The device cannot save the session onto a USB device at this time.

Detailed Instructions
1) Remove the device, mouse, power cable, and swivel platform from the case.
2) Set the device on top of the swivel platform and open the cover.
3) Plug one end of the power cable into the rear of the case and the other end into the wall power socket. This will power on the device.
4) Wait until the operating system has completed startup procedures.
5) Right-click on desktop and select “Terminal” from the pop-up menu. Once the Terminal window is open, right-click inside the window to start the communication program.
6) Select concentration of engineering that you are associated with. Press F6 for Electrical Engineering or F7 for Mechanical Engineering.
7) To enter text into the conversation box, type text into the phrase entry boxes and press ENTER.
8) Use the TAB key to navigate between the Professor and Student phrase entry boxes.

9) To save a conversation, press the F1 key. The conversation will save to the current directory which the program is saved in. A message should be displayed in the conversation box displaying the time and date that the session was saved.
10) To start a new session, press the F5 key. Warning: the text in the conversation box will be erased unless it is saved prior to pressing the F5 key.
11) To increase the font size, press the F3 key. The text in the conversation box will increase in size each time the key is pressed. Any text entered after the F3 key is pressed will also be the same size as the text in the conversation box.
12) To decrease the font size, press the F2 key. The text in the conversation box will decrease in size each time the key is pressed. Any text entered after the F2 key is pressed will also be the same size as the text in the conversation box.
13) In order to add a phrase to the auto-complete list, enter the phrase into a phrase entry box and press F4. A message will confirm that the phrase has been added. If the phrase was already added to the auto-complete list, the program will display a message stating that the phrase has previously been added.

Troubleshooting
1) Cannot save session: If the save session message was not displayed after pressing F1 key, ensure that the cursor is located in one of the phrase entry boxes. This can be done by pressing the TAB key. Once the cursor is in one of the phrase entry boxes, press the F1 key again in order to save the session.
2) Cannot add new phrase to auto-complete list: The program currently cannot add the same phrase
3) Program freezes: If the program freezes or stops functioning properly, press the reset button in order to reboot the system. Wait until the operating system has completed startup procedures and refer to step 5 under the Detailed Instructions section of the user manual.
4) System does not start up: Ensure that the power cable is properly connected and that the reset button is not stuck. If problem persists, refer to resources provided in the Appendix.
