USES AND GRATIFICATIONSBY MARK NEWMAN

WHAT ARE THE ‘USES AND GRATIFICATIONS’?

• A Theory devised by Blumler and Katz in 1974.

• It is about how people view the media.

• These uses and gratifications use the media in 4 different ways.

DIVERSION

• Diversion is escaping everyday problems.

• This could be buying a magazine for example.

• Mainly used to distract you from your life and people around you.

SURVEILLANCE

• Surveillance is about gaining information about the world.

• This could be something like a magazine telling you about where they will be at certain times in concert.

PERSONAL IDENTITY

• Personal Identity is about finding parts of Media which suit you.

• This can be something that you familiarise yourself with, like a rap artist acting a certain way which you can relate to.

PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS

• Personal Relationships is about using the media to find out about the background of celebrities.

• This is used when finding out what for example Rock Stars do in their free time and their relationships.

USE OF DIVERSION:

• On this contents page the diversion on it will be the entire magazine, as it is being sold in attempt to make you want to be distracted.

USE OF PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

• On this contents page an example of personal relationships will be at the bottom written from James talking about things unrelated to his job.

USE OF PERSONAL IDENTITY:

• On this contents page an example of personal identity will be that All Time Low are stood together in a way no different to how those who aren’t in a famous band would act, relating to the reader.

USE OF SURVEILLANCE:

• The main use of surveillance on this page will be the main picture in the centre with the meet and greet, below this it shows times and dates of when you can meet and greet them.
