1980 n Montgomery County establishes the Shady Grove Life Sciences Center on land donated by the Gudelsky family for research and education. The University System of Maryland (USM) is given 50 acres of the donated land. 1989 n The University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute opens the Center for Advanced Research in Biotechnology (CARB) at the Shady Grove Center. 1992 n Shady Grove Education Building I opens as a regional higher education center for evening and part- time undergraduate and graduate programs. The center is administered by UMUC. 1997 n Education Building II and Conference Center open at the Shady Grove Center. 1998 n Education leaders begin discussions with business and community leaders to develop a plan to bring USM institutions into Montgomery County to offer daytime undergraduate programs. 2000 n USM establishes the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) as a multi-institution partnership to offer upper level daytime undergraduate programs. n First USG Board of Advisors and Shady Grove Governing Council are established. n A Student Services office is established at USG. n 8 USM institutions offer courses and degrees through USG including: BSU, CSU, TU, UB, UMB, UMBC, UMCP and UMUC. n Gertrude Eaton is appointed the first Executive Director of USG. n Articulation agreements are developed between Montgomery College and the USM institutions offering 14 daytime undergraduate degree programs. 2001 n UMCP takes responsibility as the lead administrative campus of the Shady Grove Regional Higher Education Center and USG. n UMES brings Hotel & Restaurant Management undergraduate degree program to USG. 2002 n Stewart Edelstein is appointed the second Executive Director of USG. n All undergraduate and graduate degrees offered at the Shady Grove Regional Higher Education Center are incorporated into the USG partnership. n 2,380 students are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate degree programs offered by USM partner institutions. n 36 graduates receive bachelor’s degrees from USM partner institutions offering programs through USG. 2003n UMBI CARB opens its second research building.

n UMES brings Construction Management Technology undergraduate degree program to USG.

n 291 students receive bachelor’s degrees from USM partner institutions offering programs through USG.

2004n 11 acres are purchased by USM to expand the Shady Grove campus,

and a master plan for campus development is approved.

n 4 new degrees are brought to USG by TU, UMBC, and UMCP.

n 359 students receive bachelor’s degrees from USM partner institutions

offering programs through USG.

2005n The first 6 Kendall Scholars are selected supporting 3 Montgomery

College and 3 students attending undergraduate programs at USG.

n Ground is broken for Education Building III.

2006n 337 students receive bachelor’s degrees from USM partner institutions

offering programs through USG.

2007n Education Building III is officially opened and named the Camille Kendall

Academic Center (CKAC).

n CKAC achieves LEED gold certification and is awarded “Public Building of

the Year” by the Maryland Chapter of American Institute of Architects.

n University of Maryland School of Pharmacy offers PharmD at Shady Grove.

n 23 new degree programs are brought to USG by TU, UB, UMB,

UMBC, UMCP and UMUC.

n 2,519 students are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs.

n 374 students receive bachelor’s degrees from USM partner institutions

offering programs through USG.

2008n Salisbury University joins USG as its ninth USM partner institution offering

its Respiratory Therapy undergraduate degree program.

n 8 new degree programs are brought to USG by SU, TU, UMBC and UMCP.

n CKAC is awarded “Best Green Building of the Year” and “Best Sustainable Project.”

n 350 students receive bachelor’s degrees from USM partner institutions offering programs through USG.

2009n 3,286 students are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs.

n University of Maryland, College Park offers its Public Health Sciences undergraduate degree program exclusively at USG.

n “Green” parking garage opens.

n 450 students receive bachelor’s degrees from USM partner institutions offering programs through USG.

2010n More than 60 undergraduate and graduate programs are offered through USG.

n USG serves more than 3,600 students including 1,300 graduate students.

n 498 students receive bachelor’s degrees from USM partner institutions offering programs through USG,

bringing the total number of degrees awarded over the 10 year partnership to more than 3,000.
