Dear Chamber Members,

We did it! Thanks to the support of so many wonderful members of the Middleton Chamber of Commerce, we set a new record for our Annual Golf outi ng held at Pleasant View Golf Course on July 20th. Att endance for the event topped 200 and featured the additi on of a new event on the Par 3 course for our aft ernoon golfers. The 19th Hole social event aft erwards provided an ideal setti ng for recapping the days golfi ng with spectacular views overlooking Lake Mendota and the Isthmus from the outdoor pati o. I want to take this opportunity to thank Terri Redmond, Donna Parks, the many volunteers, sponsors and staff who turned this event into a huge success for our Chamber. Everyone’s work and enthusiasm--both on and off the course—was the secret to our success.

Our Annual Golf Outi ng reminded me once again that there is strength in numbers. Our Chamber conti nues to grow and prosper in these challenging economic ti mes. At the beginning of the year, I resolved to seek out and fi nd fi ve Chamber members that I have never had the opportunity to do business with before. Be it on a personal or professional level, I was determined to make a sincere eff ort to help other members. While I’ve accomplished

my goal and had fun doing it in the process, it brought me back to the idea of strength in numbers. If every Chamber member could fi nd two other members to do new business with in the second half of this year we would produce over 1200 new business opportuniti es amongst ourselves! Now that’s what I call a worthwhile plan for sti mulati ng the local economy.

Many of you are aware that the Board is working on its strategic plan labeled “Project 2015”. One of our upcoming initi ati ves will involve surveying our membership to get your input to assist us in the planning process. Our committ ee members are fi nalizing a number of short, specifi c surveys which we plan to send to you in September. Van Nutt , Executi ve Director, will announce the surveys in the near future but I want to take this opportunity to personally ask for your parti cipati on and feedback as we plan for the future. Your input will help us conti nue to improve your Chamber in the years to come.

How Did You Get From There To Here?

Profiles on the vocational journey

Interview by Dietrich Gruen

Dietrich is the former director of Middleton Outreach Ministry, a volunteer with OccuPaws raising guide dogs for the blind, and a columnist for the Middleton Times Tribune

Paul Reynolds, Owner

Reynolds Urethane

Recycling

How long have you been part of the Chamber? Since 1978, with two diff erent companies. Back when it was just my wife and me, I spearheaded getti ng health insurance for small business owners and their employees through affi liati on with the Chamber.

Two companies…which ones?Twenty three years with Future Foam (1969-92, but in Wisconsin since 1978), which was my entrée into what I do now.

And what exactly is that?I recycle polyurethane foam, polyester fi bers and carpet.

How did the one job lead to the second? At Future Foam we made the polyurethane domesti cally, and therein I saw my niche. I started this business to recycle those same products, so companies do not have to import such scrap from Europe.

Is this business what you always wanted to do or were you headed into another fi eld back in your college days? While at University of Nebraska-Omaha, I studied law enforcement. I always wanted to get into that fi eld, but Future Foam kept promoti ng me, so I was trapped by money. But I did get into training law enforcement offi cers eventually.

How so?Spending long hours on the road and not being a drinker, I took up marti al arts for something to do. I’d go to the local ‘dojo,’ or marti al arts school, in whatever town I was. Soon I was training others in self defense and various marti al arts. I have worked with offi cers from the State Patrol, the Middleton PD and the Dane County Sheriff ’s Department. For more than 40 years, I trained people from all walks of life; any who want to overcome a phobia, with or without the ability to pay. I’ve been paid in vegetables and pies. But I stopped doing that fi ve years ago.

How come? Got more involved with my family’s sporti ng events and this business of recycling.

You started as a ‘ma and pa’ operati on. How large are you now?We have three businesses, really: this one in Middleton’s Industrial Park, a second offi ce in Omaha, and a trucking line, Reynolds Freight, who does all the hauling. We have a total of 30 employees between the three.

You are very successful. What does it take (for you) to be a success in your fi eld?I never burn any bridges, but am always building them. When the phone rings, that’s an opportunity to do something for a customer. We solve their problem today, they’ll keep coming back. The right atti tude goes a long way. My philosophy can be summed up by what a Rush Street (Chicago) preacher once told me: “It’s your atti tude, not your apti tude that determines your alti tude, along with a litt le intesti nal forti tude…there’s a Guy in the sky who helps those who try.”

You sound like a man of faith. I att end this church in Black Earth—‘New Heights Lutheran’. I love our pastor, Rob Nelson, greatest guy in the world. I married a Lutheran, but I am not

Lutheran. Sti ll Roman Catholic, and will be as long as my mother is alive. At church I mentor the 8th graders, the ‘white belts’ I call them, as they move up to become black belts in the faith.

Where will your company be, years from now, when you reti re? Will any in your family take over?I won’t reti re. My father reti red at age 55, while sti ll owning two companies. Big mistake, he said. I love the challenge of this place day to day. I love the employees. All my children (three sons, one daughter) have worked here. One ever since he was six years old.

How do your family values carry over into this work setti ng?In terms of discipline, I make the right thing easy to do and the wrong thing, hard. When kids stray, let them go that directi on; when it gets too hard going against the grain, they grow weary and come back. I have just three company rules: If it is not safe, don’t do it. Do not argue with anyone (not fellow workers, supervisors, customers or me; if you must argue, go home, came back the next day when you can talk about it rati onally). You may criti cize anything or anyone here, as long as you have a viable alternati ve.

Besides that winning philosophy, what else do you want to pass on? Joy.
