What does our program look like?
● One-way dual language, Spanish-English● Full day kindergarten● Multi-age 1/2 classrooms● Native literacy instruction continues in
grades 3 - 6 within the content areas only ● Transition 3rd grade classroom
What is the goal of dictation?
Dictation is a learning task where emerging bilingual learners will: ● Think about language● Improve oracy (express oneself fluently and
grammatically in speech)● Improve reading and writing skills● Receive immediate feedback on accuracy and
miscues
4
What does dictation practice?
Through dictation, bilingual learners will practice listening, speaking, spelling, grammar, writing conventions, specific/difficult features of the two languages and reading fluency.
A LOT OF BANG FOR YOUR BUCK!!

The driving force behind the success of dictation is the explicit teaching used, the calculated planning for dictation content
and the consistent and daily time you devote to this teaching technique.
In other words, consistency and repeated practice is KEY!
WHAT DOES THE RESEARCH SAY?
● The Mexican national literacy program, Programa Nacional para el Fortalecimiento de la Lectura y la Escritura Basica (PRONALEES), states reading and writing are connected AND writing leads to reading development
7
Further research says...
● Vygotsky showed when students receive explicit instruction within their zone of proximal development they acquire new literacy skills they would not have gained by working alone.
8
And still more research...
● Kathy Escamilla (Literacy Squared in Action) has shown how the use of TheDictado can develop Spanish literacy skills and support English language development (ELD).
● Recommends incorporating dictado into native literacy block and ELD (English Language Development) block
9
Method 1
● 25 minutes, daily practice of dictado in BOTH languages
● Use spelling lists and high frequency word lists
● Highlight variant vowels in English
What can YOUR dictado look like?
Method 2
● 15 minutes daily● Weekly switch between
English and Spanish● Skills taken from
content units and specific language features
●

Important instructional points of Dictado
● Teacher reads sentence while students listen, pencils up
● Students repeat sentence with teacher● Students repeat sentence independently, while
tracking number of words ● Students write the sentence● Teacher types sentence and projects while
generating sentences
12
● Students track teacher sentence and compare to own sentence
● Students circle errors (no erasing) and write word correctly above or below
● Teacher highlights features she wants to explicitly teach
● Follow up student discussion based on observations and connections(cognates)
● When finished with entire dictation students read their own sentences back to themselves while teacher circulates

How does using dictado positively impact your students?
1. Empowers ELL students to write in their native language and second language using the skills we teach
2. Skills naturally transfer from dictado lessons to independent writing
3. Longitudinal improvement in ACCESS writing scores and district benchmark writing
4. Longitudinal improvement in Spanish/English reading fluency for entering 2nd graders based on AIMS Web data
