Soup Kitchen Update May 30th: Team 3, led by Mike and Wendy Himmelman and Michelle Gabriel; 109 were fed. Food and volunteers from St John’s United Church.

Yesterday, June 6th: Team 4, led by Evelyn Mann and Michelle Gabriel. Food and volunteers from St Peter’s, Birch Cove.

This week, June 13th: Team 5, led by Jacquie de Mestral and Leona Sweeney. Food and volunteers from Bedford Baptist.

Plant Sale: THANK YOU! We extend a warm thank-you to all the volunteers, donors, and patrons who participated in the sale this weekend. There were lots of jobs to be done, items to be sorted, and treasures to be found! We are especially grateful to Michal King, who tackled managing this project again this year with her signature good nature and vigour. Deo gracias!

Thank you to our Synod Delegates We are grateful to our Synod Delegates, Jacquie de Mestral and Craig Savoury, who took part in Diocesan Synod May 28-30. Synod demands long days and discussions from all delegates, and we are glad that Jacquie and Craig (along with our Rector) were willing to put in the time to maintain our voice and our connection to others in the Diocese.

Hall and Church Keys – Help us update our list! The programs and volunteer projects we take on at St George’s means that we issue a great many keys to our buildings to various helpers in the congregation. Sometimes that list gets a little out of hand! If you hold keys to the church or the hall, can you swing by the parish office and help us update our records? Many thanks to everyone who has gotten in touch so far!

Having an up-to-date list of keyholders is especially helpful if we need to rekey the buildings and reissue keys, and it also helps us determine who may be first in the building, during this time without a Sexton, as those people would need to have a security code as well. (See announcement within.)

IMPORTANT, please familiarize yourself

Sexton Vacancy and protocol for Hall & Church use We are now without a Sexton on the church property. In the absence of a Sexton, the alarms will no longer be disarmed daily at 6:30am.

It will be the responsibility of the person or organizer of group activities to see that the alarm is disarmed upon entering the buildings for any purpose. This need be done only once in the day, by the first to enter the buildings on any given day.

When checking to see if the system is armed, upon entering any door, the person is to listen for a steady beeping sound coming from the alarm panel. If you hear one, you are to enter in your four digit code to deactivate the alarm, which must be done within 30 seconds. If no sound is heard and you see a green light on the control panel, the system is already disarmed and no action is to be taken.

The system automatically arms itself at 10:30 PM each night. Each of us can be careful about ensuring that lights are turned off and doors are closed tightly behind us, as these would be things often caught by the Sexton at the end of the day.

To prevent as much as possible the occurrence of false alarms, we all need to exercise diligence when accessing the hall or church.

Thank you for your assistance. We look forward to having a Sexton in place this Fall.

Helios Vocal Ensemble presents “Treasures from the Crypt: Rediscovered Music from All Saints Cathedral” Last year, thousands of forgotten choral scores were rescued from damp in the crypt of All Saints Cathedral. Now, Helios Vocal Ensemble, a newly formed vocal quintet, presents a programme entitled “Treasures from the Crypt: Rediscovered Music from All Saints Cathedral,” including works from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries. They will also be singing rarely-heard music from the collection of the late Jacqueline Harmer, which was performed at the cathedral in the 1960s and 70s. Helios’s members are well known at St. George’s, including Eszter Horvath, current music director at All Saints; Elisabeth Kleven, Andrew Pickett, Garth MacPhee, and John Mark Dawson. The concert will be Sunday, June 14, 7:30 pm at the Cathedral Church of All Saints, 1330 Martello St. Admission is by donation.

From General Synod: The 22 Days Campaign General Synod is calling us to 22 days of prayer and renewal in our commitments to healing and reconciliation among all people – the Indigenous Peoples of this land and all others who have come and settled and also call it home. These 22 days will take us to the National Aboriginal Day of Prayer, on Sunday, June 21st. How can you participate?

• Listen to the story of a survivor of Residential Schools (many stories available at 22days.ca), and pray for those affected by the long shadows of Residential Schools

• Ring church bells for the murdered and missing indigenous women and girls (1017 murdered and 105 missing between 1980 and 2012)

• Consider our commitment as a church to stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples in their cry for justice

• Post your own stories of learning and witness to the call to renewed relations with the First Peoples of this land. (Can be posted to 22days.ca)

St George’s Twitter feed is posting links to stories and retweeting things related to the #22days campaign. You can follow us at https://twitter.com/stgeoround
