K ENT B EASLEY , MD, MS, FACP, FACC Clinical Professor of Mechanical Engineering This course is sponsored by the Mechanical Engineering Department and the Institute for Computational Engineering and Science. It consists of a lecture series, a preceptorship at the Heart Hospital of Austin and a site visit to Austin Radiologic Association. The preceptorship includes observation of both vascular and cardiac surgery, observation of cardiac catheterization, angiograms, and stent placements and observations of electrophysiology studies. These studies include pacemaker and defibrillator placements. Included in the preceptorship is cardiovascular imaging including coronary artery scoring and CT angiograms. The ARA visit includes observations of PET scans, MRIs scans, and CT scans. The lecture series includes clinical cardiology topics with an emphasis on engineering aspects. The lectures include cardiopulmonary bypass, left ventricular assist devices, and robotic (DaVinci) surgery as well as other topics as an overview of clinical cardiology. Questions?
