ABSTRACT

Sungai Besar Fishing Village was established in around 1915. It is over 100 years old.

Sungai Besar is a coastal town in the district of Sabak Bernam in the state of Selangor,

Malaysia. The town is located about 120km north-west of Kuala Lumpur. The main

attraction in Sungai Besar is the Fishing Village where one can find fresh seafood and

sea-products. Its main economic activity and source of income are fishing and selling fish.

INTRODUCTION

History of the village

Sungai Besar Fishing Village was established in around 1915. It is over 100 years old.

Sungai Besar Fishing Village is located in Sabak Bernam, Selangor. Nearby towns

include:

Kuala Lumpur which is about 120km south-east from Sungai Besar

Klang which is about 98km south-east from Sungai Besar

There are rivers flowing through and an exact view of Malacca Strait from the fishing

village.

Population, Housing, Transportation

Through the interview with the village head, its current population size in 2015 is

approximately 3500 and the number of household is more than 300. Over the years, the

population is declining because of the outflow of young people. Most of the young

people are not willing to be involved in fishing because of the difficulty in adapting to

fishermen‟s living style and less job opportunities in the village regarding fishing.

Although some of the facilities in Sungai Besar are not inside the village, facilities

such as hospital, police station and fire station are nearby the village. For example, the

distance of the hospital to the village is only about 10km. From what the village head

said, the facilities inside the village are well-supported and in good condition except for a

relaxing place for old people. The old people would benefit from such place if it is set up.

In the past, the villagers made use of rain water for washing or even drinking. But now,

the source of water in the village is JKR. Besides, the electricity supply is from Tenaga

Nasional Berhad (TNB) and the waste disposal method is by flushing. The

telecommunication in the village is also up to date using mobile or fixed line.

The security in the Sungai Besar fishing village is considered satisfactory. For instance,

there are some “RELA” inside the village which help in maintaining the village‟s security.

The road system in this village is in good condition. The main transportations of the

motorcycles and cars. This is because the public transportations in the village are not so

convenient. The arrival rate of the public transportations such as buses is very low. If a

person has missed the bus schedule, he or she may have to wait up to a few hours for

another bus to come.

The drainage system in the village is poor and needs improvement.

The garbage collection in Sungai Besar Fishing Village is well planned, 2 or 3 times

weekly. This practice is acceptable for all the villagers.

The other facilities in the village are the community hall, basketball field with shelter,

rest house for fishermen and some shops and stalls. In the morning, there will also have a

market for the villagers to buy some foods and vegetables without going out so far.

The size of village is about 40 hectare and is actually fully utilized. There is no more

room for the government to develop and the development can only be made outside the

village.

Economic Activities

The main economic activities in Sungai Besar Fishing Village are as follows:

Fishing; its outputs are sold locally such as Kuala Lumpur, some of them are

exported to other countries such as Singapore. The number of local people

involved in fishing is declining. Mostly the employers hire foreign workers from

Thailand and Myanmar to do their fishing. According to the village head, this

activity has reached a particular level where it has a very low chance to be

expanded in the future.

There are also some fishing industries involved in processing sea products such as fish

balls. Other economic activities include, farming (fruit planting), small business in sales,

and fishing net mending.

Based on Sungai Besar Fishing Village‟s economic activities and resources, there

are opportunities for future investments in tourism such as to attract the tourists with

eagles (feed the eagles at a constant period and let the eagles come back daily), based

on what the village head said.

SOCIAL, CULTURAL AND RELIGIOUS PRACTICES

Sungai Besar Fishing Village has a population of 100% Chinese with majority “Teochew”

(more 99%). Due to the composition of its population, the main language spoken is

„Teochew‟, a Chinese dialect. There are more than 80% of villagers with surname of

„Xie‟. The main religions practiced in this village are Buddhism and Taoism. There are 7

to 8 Chinese temples as a place of worship for the Buddhists and Taoists. Some of the

temples are at least 10 years old.

From the interview, fishermen always pray to “Na Tok Kong” (拿督公) before setting

out to sea for fishing to ensure their safety. Since “Na Tok Kong” is Malay, fishermen

are not allowed to consume pork during their fishing time on their boat or otherwise they

may not be blessed by “Na Tok Kong”.

Every year during the ninth day of the ninth month in the Chinese calendar, there will be

a religious festival held in “Xian Fa Shi Gong” temple. This festival is so called “Chung

Yeung” festival(重阳节) and it is a traditional Chinese Holiday.

This is another temple called “Xian Fa Shi Gong” (仙法师公).

EDUCATION

Sungai Besar Fishing Village has the following education institutions:

There is a primary school, named SJK (C) SIN MIN SG. BESAR. It is located outside

the fishing village but it is nearby. Therefore, teenagers from the fishing village are

studying there. The school is full with the required facilities like field for activities,

library, computer lab, assembly hall and etc.

Besides, kindergartens as well as secondary schools are also available nearby or inside

the village, even the current village head is the president of a kindergarten in the village.

Since the village is near the city, the education institutions in Sungai Besar are actually

considered very nice. According to the village head, the school is has sufficient facilities

and is well-supported by the communities.

PROBLEMS AND NEEDS OF PEOPLE

The main problems faced by Sungai Besar Fishing Village are as follows:

The water in some of the water passages is not clean, and this might cause a

negative effect on the aquatic life such as fish and aquatic plants, which, in turn

should not be consumed by humans. The polluted water might also cause some

health issues to the villagers.

Lack of a recreation place for old people to spend time in since their children are

mostly not in the village and they might feel lonely.

Most of the young people are not willing to be involved in fishing because of the

difficulty in adapting to fishermen‟s living style resulting in continuation of the

said activity at stake.

The public transportations in the village are said to be irregular.

In relation to the opportunities and problems mentioned above, the following

recommendations are made.

There are opportunities for future investments in tourism such as to attract the

tourists with eagles (feed the eagles at a constant period and let the eagles come

back daily).

Due to the irregular public transportation system, the bus company responsible

can increase the efficiency by providing more buses and timely schedules.

Encourage villagers to raise fund to build a comfortable courtyard for the elderly.

Encourage villagers to conduct weekly clearing up of drainage system This can

also enhance their social relationships.
