Richard D. McCullough, CMU

UTEN 2nd Annual Conference 2010, UNL, Lisbon

Plextronics’ Founder and Chief Scientist, Wins the 2006 Carnegie Science Center’s Award of Excellence: Start-up Entrepreneur of the Year - The Carnegie Science Center established the Awards for Excellence program in 1997 to recognize and promote outstanding science and technology achievements in Western Pennsylvania. McCullough is widely recognized in the scientific community for his initial development of chemical compounds (polymers called regioregular polythiophenes, or RRPs) that conduct electricity hundreds of thousands of times faster than competitive materials. Subsequent to his initial discovery, he developed the "McCullough synthesis" and the "GRIM synthesis" to make what are now recognized worldwide as the most cost-effective, electronics quality materials. RRPs are excellent conductors of electricity because of their uniform composition and ability to neatly align into nanowires. Unlike other commercialized conducting polymers, RRPs can be dissolved in solution, which means that a solution of RRPs could be sprayed onto small devices using ink-jet technology that doesn’t require clean rooms essential for standard chip production. McCullough has used these methods to easily produce highly conductive plastics of RRPs that "self assemble" into supramolecular structures ideal for electronic applications such as integrated circuits, flat-screen displays, and solar cells. In 2002, Plextronics was founded as a spin-out from Carnegie Mellon University to take advantage of the vast commercial opportunities generated by the scientific breakthroughs of the McCullough Lab. This exceptional scientific foundation of nanostructured, electrically conductive materials is the core of Plextronics’ Plexcore technology; the technology on which Plextronics was founded. In addition to the leadership necessary to establish the company, Dr. McCullough also provided the scientific insight to guide the scale-up and adaptation of these methods for industrial use. In 2006, with 26 employees, Plextronics was recognized as a "technology start-up to watch" by the Red Herring, an InnovationWorld 21 -21 companies to watch in the 21st century, and Frost and Sullivan’s Emerging Technology of the Year in the field of Printed Electronics.

McCullough joined Carnegie Mellon in 1990 and became Professor and Head of Chemistry in 1998. He is recognized as a leader in research on conducting polymers with interests including organic, polymer, and inorganic materials chemistry. His accomplishments have included important new syntheses of polythiophenes with planar conjugated backbones to produce a 1000-fold increase in the electrical conductivity over twisted, irregular polythiophene. Because the regioregular polythiophene self-assembles to form various nanostructured materials, it can be used for nanoelectronic assembly and fabrication of molecular circuits and potentially for biosensors. McCullough is also pursuing interests in the synthesis of organic-inorganic hybrid nanomagnets, high-spin materials, and novel nanocrystalline semiconductor materials. He serves on the Technical Advisory Board of BFGoodrich Performance Materials as well as the Editorial Boards of Advanced Materials and the Journal of Materials Chemistry. He is also a member of the University's Biotechnology Implementation Committee.

Vice President for Metrics and Surveys for ASTP (Association of European Science & Technology Transfer Professionals) and Assistant Vice President for Metrics and Surveys for AUTM (Association of University Technology Managers).

Kevin was appointed Director of Research and Enterprise (R&E) at the University of Glasgow in October 2003 and he is responsible for directing activities in order to achieve the research and enterprise objectives of the University. This includes working with the Vice-Principal of Research & Enterprise in developing the University’s research strategy and the development and implementation of the Knowledge Transfer/ commercialisation strategy for the University. Kevin also leads the University's involvement in many areas of Economic Development, particularly with Scottish Enterprise and through the European Structural Funds.

Kevin Cullen, Director of Research & Enterprise (R&E) at the University of Glasgow

UTEN 2nd Annual Conference 2010, UNL, Lisbon

Kevin has a strong interest in all aspects of 'research and enterprise' type activities of universities and particularly the roles to be played by the universities in Knowledge Transfer. He developed a framework in which the University sometimes acts as an agent of economic development (outreach) and sometimes acts as a venturer to make financial returns (outcome). This outreach / outcome spectrum is helping to define the terms of reference for the Knowledge Transfer debate amongst research funders and policy makers and is currently used as the basis for allocation of knowledge transfer grant in Scotland.

Kevin also has a long-standing interest in economic development, spin-out companies, and developing the University interface with SMEs (small and medium-sized companies). This interest has been reflected in the recent establishment of the Glasgow Innovation Network project to develop linkages between the university and the business base.

Kevin joined R&E in 1999 from Heriot-Watt University, where he held responsibility for devising and implementing the University's commercialisation strategy. He has also worked for Procter & Gamble in the UK and Belgium, in the fields of technical brand management, product development, and technology development covering Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. He has acted as an external expert and consultant in a number of international projects, particularly focused on Knowledge Transfer. His qualifications include a PhD in physical-organic chemistry from the University of Edinburgh. Kevin is currently Vice President for Metrics and Surveys for ASTP (Association of European Science & Technology Transfer Professionals) and Assistant Vice President for Metrics and Surveys for AUTM (Association of University Technology Managers), the world’s largest academic Technology Transfer association. Kevin is Past President of UNICO (the UK Technology Transfer Association) and has served as both Vice President for Metrics and Surveys and Vice President for Membership on the Board of AUTM.
