Making this magazine has beenmore pleasurable than we everthought and you lot are the reasonwhy we keep going. There’s no pot ofgold in producing it, no personalbenefits or ego massages gained. We do it for one simple reason andthat’s to promote Coventry and it’speople, the ones out there who areworking every second to make adifference and offer an alternativeoption.

We aren’t under the illusion thatCoventry is a golden palace waitingto be discovered and we really don’tthink we have anything to rivalLondon, Milan and Madrid but theinspiring thing is that we and ourfellow Coventrians aren’t aiming to.

We know what we have, some saynot alot but others say the oppositebut the positivity in the city isgrowing, the dedication is higherthan ever and creative minds arebringing together the best frommusic, fashion, culture and otherlifestyle options to offer us,jo-public, a choice.

This month see’s Classique reachit’s 5th birthday, the continuing riseof Proud, Matik and Decadence andMaison, we saw the successfullaunch of the 2-Tone Centralcafe/venue, huge comedy acts havebeen lined up at the Arts Centre, WeLove You City completed asuccessful stint at the Belgrade,Gladrags hosted an open day eventat Shelton Square and the NurseryTavern hosted a charity day whichfeatured local acts and raised a gooddeal of cash.

Issue Two see’s 50, free pages oflocal, lifestyle info, articles, interviews and news all aboutCoventry and it’s people. Come andget Under the Influence >>>

Coventry. 1979. A city of strife in the factories andviolence on the streets. It’s hard being 16 – butsomething’s stirring in the garages and livingrooms of the city. Music offers a way out for spikyGary – a fish out of water on the Canley Parkestate – posh boy Nick and cheeky Sonya, whoseAsian parents think she’s doing after-schooldrama…

Guitarist Brendan Casey talks to me aboutCoventry’s darkest and dirtiest, and whythe city makes for a perfect trainingground for a band perfecting their game…

Sounding noticeably akin to a Beefheart -Meat Puppets fusion, you can hear thetinges of Nirvana in songs like StillRemains, and The Damned is anotherprominent influence. But the band’sultimate identity arrives in tracksincluding Hole in the Road and Fits;whereby the Men champion theirsomewhat avant-garde style.

Their currently using Coventry as a sort oftraining ground until they release theirnext CD before the year is out. But despitefeeling fairly content to build up a localfollowing at the moment, Brendanbelieves that “it would do a lot of Coventrybands good by playing out more”. So nowthe Men are taking their time to reachtheir potential, and to develop theirstructure into something of a morediverse nature. It is Brendan’s not-so-distant dream that “after a little whilelonger it would be nice to challenge thepeople we play to a bit. Once we’ve gotpeople that come and see us, then we canstart pissing them off”.

They appreciate the tightness of theCoventry music scene and feel that it’s asad state of affairs that the London mediaoften paint a negative picture of it. It’s all‘destitute working class’ and ‘lines at thejob centre’ since The Enemy broke out andtold them that’s how it is here in Coventry.Brendan personally resents the fact thatthe city is often labelled as “everyonebeing so poor they can’t afford to doanything. And everyone loves Oasis”.

Resurrection Men however, land on theother side of the horizon to Oasis. Insteadyou can imagine a troop of zombiesmarching in the desert, rising from theWild West like alternative gypsies- riffingand licking blues-rock in the dirt. It’s farcloser to the ideal.

The king of obscureinstruments Olly Betts, revealsthe near-miss themes that theCarrot don’t quite have alongwith the rest of all that jazz…

The alternative art rockers aresomewhat like a refreshercourse, whimsically feedinganyone who dares gamble ataste on the Carrot. Using avariety of unheard instrumentsincluding fender rhodes, abasshum recorder and a rhinosax- Black Carrot havebecome part of the jazz fusiongenre, paying homage toImpulse! Records legends likeJohn Coltrane and PharoahSanders. They’re different, tosay the least.

Different yes, but not soobscure that the only appeal isa pretentious cry for help, heard only by the upper classart school elite above extendedsilences in some jazzimpromptu playing on theirEuropean sound system, asthey saunter in their Italianloafers.

Not quite a blow-off-your-head-if-you-stand-to-near-to-the-speakers band, it is in factthe sound, or the mood that ismost prominent about theCarrot. Stewart Brackley’svocals are a gibbering warblewoven through an avant-gardetapestry- never quite coherent, yet always an impression. Andin terms of theme, it’s fair tosummate that preconceivednotions are never really animportant constituent for theband. “They’re not particularlyabout anything, there’s a bit ofa war theme going on. We’vegot a single out in October, andthat’s got a bit of a themeabout it. But no, they’re notreally about anything inparticular” Olly Betts, Carrotmastermind assures me.

The first misconception aboutBlack Carrot, is that they haveEastern European roots. Ollyjustly announces, “Peoplewere saying “you sound likeFaust or Neu! or like all theseGerman things of which I’venever owned a record, beforewe started doing it”.

In actual fact they’re signed toCoventry-based label TinAngel Records, and havegained a mostly bohemianfollowing within the city andacross Midlands; despitedwelling mostly in home townMarket Harborough. The UKmay have been the feedingground for Black Carrot- and atour around the country is notunlikely- but they havepreviously stepped outside ofthe UK to measure theacceptance in Eastern Europe. Two trips to Poland can besighted on their résumé- if notpurely to see how a jazz fusionband might go down in thecountry famed for ‘disco polo’.

“We’ve got a mate over there, who organised this little thing-a tour sounds a bit grand- wejust played down his local. Itsounds a lot grander than itwas… It was fun. The first nightwe played we had cleared theplace, bar from one, which isquite an achievement”, statesOlly unassumingly. Hecontinues on to say “Thesecond time we toured there,we took our storyteller with us,and we even more bad press”.

The fact is that the band don’treally care if you like them ofnot. They’re respectfully of amore mature set these days, never pausing to actively seekapproval. They are insteadapplying themselves to anexperiment, of a kind. Nowafter working away for roundabout 10 years, the generaltemperament can be

summarised by; “We’re justgoing to keep doing what we’redoing. No one’s going to get usanyway, so it doesn’t reallymatter!”

Rousing words from theCarrot’s musical ‘let’s pick itup and see what happens’frontrunner, who reveals noostentatious background insight when it comes toinstrumental competence.“I’ve played woodwinds foreverreally, and I think keys is justsomething I fell in to. Wehaven’t been trained, Stewknows what he’s doingmusically, but the rest of us-we don’t- we just sort of find itand play it”. He continues todisclose that “We started offtrying to be a bit of a, not a jazzband, but an out-there Sun Rasort of jazz thing. And it gelledinto what we’re doing now”.

So when there is a theme?Well so far they havecomposed a soundtrack toworks on Edgar Allan Poe, andFranz Kafka amidst others, which they recorded withtemporal bard Nigel Parkin. But that’s old news, andpresently fans can lookforward to a new record on thehorizon... “They’ll be a newalbum next year, possibly” Ollyjust barely prophesises.“Hopefully be a double one-out in the Tin Angel, at somepoint. We’re sort of justthinking about it at themoment”.

So if you maybe, sort of, mightquite like to give Black Carrota listen, then previous albumsare available at the Tin Angelor on the band’s website
