KT Tunstall has had a recurring dream since shewas a child. She sees a tiger in her garden andgoes outside to stroke it. She returns indoorsand is seized by the fear that she could havebeen killed. Over the years, it has occurred toher that the reason the tiger responds sopassively is that she herself is disguised as atiger. That she is wearing a tiger suit.

Four 40 Records is the brainchild of two lads,Thomas and James who are both at university butwanted to help push up and coming producers andlarger names.

Both lads have a massive passion for future garageand dubstep so decided to approach James Crone, the former owner of LU10 records.

Thomas was already created artwork for James’srecord covers and they ended up discussing thepossibilities of running the label together.

Meanwhile James was brought up from the meanstreets of Birmingham and was heavily influenced bymixture of genres including raggae, garage, dub andother underground scenes. James decided to DJ hisown tracks and eventually produced them too and atthe age of 27 he has toured with Kissy Sellout andplayed a hybrid of various styles.

James recently joined forced with Thomas andtogether they created what is now Four 40 Records, which is set to dominate the dub, garage and housescene in the near future.

PROUDAS PUNCHWe talk to Coventry’sproducer, promoterand superstar DJLouis Proud

Hello Louis, how are you today?Recovering from another mental "Proud" & "Proud Till Dawn"event! So tired but satisfied! ;-)

We know of you through Proud, but can you shed a littlemore light on what Proud is and stands for?"Proud" is a spin off event of my big daddy brand "proud sound"which is also the home of Proud Sound Productions (PSP). A labelthat releases music globally and has local and internationalartists on board, all receiving immense support from worldleaders in the scene like, Dubfire, Erick Morillo, Axwell,Funkagenda, Pete Tong/Radio1 & More!

The event "Proud" stands for what it more or less means, feelingpleasure or satisfaction over something regarded as highlyhonourable or creditable to people who want decent music andatmosphere alike. It's Majestic, Magnificent. Its an event withmusic that is a credit & of high dignity to the electronic housescene. Were not any of that commercial pop or funky pants, welike to think were underground enough, but just not the minimal

sort when you are unsure if thef**in tracks changed in 4hours!!!!!(ha) ;-)

You work closely withMaison, how did that comeabout? The management at Maisonapproached me first to beinvolved in a summer festivalshowcasing what they hadresearched into being the mostinteresting and fresh brands &DJs on the local scene. I wasobviously flattered that myhard work was noted in thatway and when we got theball rolling with "proud" andthey saw what we were aboutand the work and passionthat goes in, we became amaison regular and were allnow one big happyfamily.(ha) I/we enjoyworking with Maison, the bestvenue and group of peopleive been involved in since istarted putting on eventsnearly 3 years ago (underdifferent event names).

Proud is constantlyattracting a large numberof people, how do youmaintain your appeal?Keeping it Cool, Fresh & a stepahead of the currentnightlife/market! Its excitingtimes for an exciting brand. The consistant artwork/promois key too, it helps get themessage across in a cool andprofessional manner.

What do you plan Proud tobecome within the next 12months?I think its fair to say with"Proud" only being on themidlands scene for 6 monthsand already one of the bestand most interesting/excitingevents locally, with an overallaverage of 500+ cool, decentpeople at every event, highlights were already aforce locally. So next step for2011 is taking up a challenge

further a field and giving bigcities like London &Manchester a taste of theProud revolution which hasturned alot of heads and hadthe electronic music scenetalking about across the UK. Inturn this is good for Coventrybeing our base/home.

What are your musicalinfluences and musicalpast?I have no direct influence forwhat i do apart from a naturalburning passion. Ok maybe

Michael Jackson growing up!ha... Oh and helterskelter/dreamscape tapepacks from about 11 years old!!I started DJing on Technics1200's when i was about 18.But i was always music madsince i was 5 years old. Mymum has pictures of me at 5years walking around withheadphones on and small pileof 7 inch vinyls under my arm!I was crazy about it when i firststarted properly DJing at18/19 playing trance & hardhouse. Id come in from theclubs at 4-6am and jump onthe decks for 2 hours beforegetting my head down about8/9am!!! My first big gig came

at 20 when i played on thesame line up as eddie halliwellat sundissential! Playing moreharder style of house. That wasunreal as i massively admiredhalliwell then too and hadpeople from all over UK thathad made the trip shaking myhand and taking pictures withme, was very surreal.

Production came along not farafter but i sort of took about 2years out of music includingselling my decks due togrowing a little tired with thestyle of music but also due tothe birth of my first son who’snow 5. I then got back intothe swing of things prettyhard about 3 years ago, butentering the new fresh housescene & the CDJ era.

Who are your currentinfluences/idols?I admire guys like MarkKnight, Erick Morillo or JohnDigweed who have come upthrough the scene for yearsbuilding solid establishedbrand/s along with the task oftheir own profile, similar thingto what I’m trying to achieve.

Do you have any plans totake Proud out of Coventryand to a national audience? As mentioned previously, yes,London & Manchester is on thecards. Im already in talks withclubs. Im also looking at Ibizanext year. I was infact askedto go over to the Miami WMCfestival this year, but had tofund it myself, so had to turnthe offer down. But maybethats another option for nextyear.

We know you've worked withsome local artists, who doyou respect the most?I have no favourite. "Most" aregood guys and i respect theirhunger for wanting to beinvolved with me or the scene.

Keeping itCool, Fresh &a step aheadof the currentnightlife/market! Itsexcitingtimes for anexcitingbrand.

What do you think toCoventry creative scene? andwho do you think will betaking it to the next level?I think on a general scale thescene don’t pull togetherenough to guide it to the nextlevel. I also don’t think peoplelike the Coventry council doenough to help the scene either.Someones always gotsomething to moan about ;-)

What would you like to seehappen to Coventry'sunderground/night scene?More suited/equiped clubs forit. Like the institute ofBirmigham or Sankeys ofManchester. Then people maygive the nightlife more of achance, at the end of the daywe use to have it with theEclipse, Foundry and evenCrazy daisys.

Where is the best club you'veplayed?Air superclub in Birmighamwas mint, wicked systems inthere. Plus being told by thebar staff that it was one of thebest sets they had heard at theclub that year... and air clubhome of godskitchen havesome big boys play there!!

Who do you think willbecome a big player in thelocal scene in 2011?Hmm, tricky one, not sure. Bit ofan unpredictable scene attimes. Any fresh guys linked to"proud" in 2011 i would saywatch out for, as im very fussywith who, how and why ichoose the line ups i do.

How did you get into DJ'ing? Not through the mobile disco djroute as you hear some dothats for sure!!! (ha)

Always been into it from earlyteens for the right incentives &reasons. My dream came trueat 18 with my first set of decks

and mixer. I watched andstudied local/ish guys at thetime like Barry Diston & Scottmiguel who became very goodfriends, more so Barry who i stillwork with at times these days.

And what would be the bestway for younger, aspiringDJ's to get into the scene? Its a hard market. More andmore jump on the bandwagonand sometimes its who pestersmore but some people in thescene don’t like pests (ha) So iwould say hard work, dedication and trying to be alittle different. Too many peoplejust pinch others ideas, noimagination of their own....Andalways be prepared to work

your way up from the bottom.Builds a strong character, likeme!

As well as Proud at Maisonyou are also a mixer, producer and promoter, what's the best tracks you'verecorded?"Zombie" was a turning point forme. It eventually got signed toMinistry of Sound forcompilation albums. So far (thati know of) being a big part ofthe sales incurred on the "HedKandi Twisted Disco 2010"album which hit Number 5 inHMV charts!Apart from that my latest "youturn away" track is my personalfavourite as its more towardsthe style im moulding into andits all my original work, including lyrics that i wrotemyself :-)

But i will say this, everyproduction ive made has gotbetter and better. The next onewill be massive. Will really putme on the global map for sure. Its nearly finished too!

What is it like to beassociated with some of thebiggest names in thebusiness, like the Ministry?Nice, things like that aremilestones in your lifetimeambitions. I remember at about12 years old with my firstMinistry annual albumthinking, imagine one day i geton a ministry compilation. Itsalso been a massive experiencewhen dealing & djing alongsidesome massive names as wellsuch as Michael Woods andThomas Gold! I use to be on realgood talking terms withMichael, until his profilerocketed in last year, but he's agood guy and i loved myexperience meeting & talkingmusic with him.

Nice, thingslike that aremilestones inyour lifetimeambitions. Iremember atabout 12years old withmy firstMinistryannual albumthinking, imagine oneday I get on aministrycompilation.

UTIINTERVIEW

UTIINTERVIEW

If there was one name you'd like tocollaborate with in Coventry that youhaven't already, who would it be?Production side i don’t think manylocally match my new niche vision &sound. I like what the Rawdirt guyshave put out on my proud sound labelthough (remix work), so maybe a colabwith them would be interesting. Eventwise, proud and matik have spokeideas and I like what matty does atCeilo too.

How would you like to be known orremembered? As a "Proud" Pioneer. A man whostarted with nothing and builteverything.

And finally... how many biscuits canyou eat without drinking?Tea biscuits or Disco biscuits??....Nocomment... Ha, Ha, Ha!

Well we never, first it was Sonique and know he’s having it large withformer Sugababe, Mutya. Coventry’s finest, Paul Morrell headed down toLondon with another local boy done good, Mark Kiszely (photographer) fora day of intense filming for Paul’s latest single with vocal star, Mutya.

In the glamourous settings of Canary Wharf the guys got down and dirtyand began recording and luckily Mark was on hand for UTI to get thesesnaps from behind the scenes and what a day it looked.

Earlier in the year Paul got his mits on Sonique and brought her up toCoventry for a special night at Classique so we’ve got our fingers crossedfor an appearance by the glamorous Mutya. Keep an eye out on Facebookfor the release of the single, which is sure to be a hit across Europe.

Cast, Feeder, Procul Harum, KTTunstall, Beth Orton, republican, Doves, Razorlight,Seth Lakeman, The Enemy...Just a part of the Assembley’sever growing list of quality.

And with those names in mindwe were exceptionally excitedabout visiting the Assembley andas soon as we arrived weunderstood the hype.

The queue for tonight’sperformance was snaking roundthe block, the anticipation waselectric and gossip that filled thewinter air was building.

The Assembley stands proud, init’s art-deco clothes, it wants tobe seen, loved and rememberedand on entrance it certainly willbe. There’s no ‘ubber-modern’interiors designed by Kev fromGrand Designs, it’s better thanthat, it’s stylised, original andhonest.

The stage sits high and mighty atthe front of an intimate hall. Thestyling continues throughout, somehow perfectly fitting forLeamington Spa - Nostereotyping, honest!

The floor creek and the wallsoooze character and that’s whatmakes the Assembley great, it

has a complete simplicity thatothers try to replicate, it has aore that is impossible to ‘design’,it is fully deserving of it’s award -the UK’s No.1 venue, anaccreditation that would gainnational exposure if given to theO2, an award that would becritically acclaimed if emergingfrom the ‘big smoke.’

The Assembley re-instates faithin intimacy when all aroundseem to be ‘selling-out’ tostadia, if you like seeing your act, hearing them and loving themthen this is the venue for you.
