Staying with the good brand

For Dominic Spirli, deciding to grow strawberries after 27 years in the earthmoving business was a very good move. Choosing and staying with Kioti tractors was another one.

Dominic and his wife Angela own Spirli Strawberries in Wandin North, Victoria. Seven years ago they bought their first Kioti tractor, a 55hp compact. Three years later they bought a 92hp ROPS Kioti PX9020 from local dealers Agpower in Lilydale.

Dominic said their first Kioti was a fantastic tractor but they eventually outgrew it.

“We looked at Kioti, then we checked out what was on offer from a big name competitor in the same horsepower bracket. Their tractors were too light. Kioti tractors are so much more robust,” he said.

“With Kioti, we didn’t have to spend extra to get the ground clearance we need because they are built with great ground clearance.

“They don’t have all the bells and whistles so they’re easy to use and maintain, and very reliable. Their manoeuvrability is brilliant, visibility is very good, the turning circle is great and they have all the pulling power you need.

“They are quiet engines too. With the PX ROPS, full noise, full revs, I can easily have a conversation on the phone,” he said.

The 92hp Kioti is their main workhorse tractor. Useful with a range of implements including their 80-inch Howard rotary hoe, it handles all their groundwork.

Almost a year ago, the Spirli’s bought another Kioti, a 76hp RX7620 cabin tractor. Dominic said it will be mainly used for spraying.

“We grow Albion and San Andreas varieties. Albion are the best tasting strawberry on the market but they don’t like high humidity so we can sell them wholesale to Brisbane and Sydney. We’re aiming for over 400,000 punnets for the season,” he said.

“And in a year or so, we might jump up to a 105hp cabin tractor, staying with the good brand, Kioti.”
