Achieving big is not an easy job. Achievement of ours too is neither sailing in a smooth and calm sea nor an experience of a good- night’s sleep in a cozy bed of roses. Yet, sweet success and glorious triumphs after facing many trials and tribulations bring joy as well as pride.

Our pride is in our association with ELTAI and in being one of the chapters of it. We connect people and institutions with the connection we have made with ELTAI. Though, Shakespeare lives in the minds of all of us we have also given rebirth to him through the event, “Shakespeare Lives” and language is lauded by organizing LangEx intracollegiate/ intercollegiate/ interschool competitions and presenting Pearl Awards to the worthy winners. We look forward to do many more events in the upcoming years too.

Our best practices were specially designed by the unique, exemplary and artistic mind of our HOD who like the perfect captain of the ship, English department, crosses the wild and tsunami waves. She always pleasantly says that we should chill out for a while when working. [Note: For her ‘chill out’ is continuing the work after taking a few deep breaths.] She would often give us vitamin and mineral tablets and would say, “Now, go on”. That also has been the secret of our energy.

Students of this region rarely opt for a career as there’s a barrier always. Breaking these barriers, our students have been placed. That’s a real joy!

All praise be to the Almighty who has been always with us and guiding us throughout our endeavours!

Our department has given us a chance to sharpen our skills not only in literature but also in all other fields. Here, we have countless golden opportunities to flourish for which we are really thankful.

We were unaware of all the extended opportunities at our doorsteps which our staff members eventually opened for us. Our abilities that are hidden within us oozed out. Their contribution in enriching our knowledge is beyond any extent.

We have an instant, marvelous innovators with us. They always believe they could. So, they are succeeding in all their efforts. Everyone has a magical power within them, but only a few can discover it. That kind of magnificence my teachers have! Their efforts to implant innovative ideas so as to kindle our skills are something extraordinary.

By utilizing the chances offered, we shall strive hard to reach our destination, In Shaa ALLAH.

Dear Students,

Greetings from Principal’s Office!

It gives me immense pleasure to associate with you at this juncture, to release the magazine “UTOPIA” 2017. The applied skills in preparing the magazine would have nurtured you to embrace new skills with inquisitive ideas. This will definitely help you to develop your skills in executing your writing competencies in future activities! Insha Allah!

To share with you, about “LIFE” – let me tell you,

“Learn to enjoy every minute of your life! Be happy now. Don’t wait for something outside of yourself to make you happy in the future. Think how really precious is the time you have to spend. Whether it’s at work or with your family. Every minute should be enjoyed and savoured”

I wish you all to come out with flying colours in the field of specialization of your choice!

May the Almighty be with you all!

Who is a Literat[ur]e Student?

Art’s mind is artistic and artistic mind is always altruistic. Altruism is the cause of positivity. Positive minds never mind anything that stops one from learning.I mean the learning of literat[ur]e students. Henceforth, let me address you with the second person pronoun [grammatically] but you are my first person [preferably].

Critical thinking is the central point of English students’ [your] learning. Language for you is just a code of meter and not a matter always. You know to read between lines and you can see the unseen through the unheard. Imagination is the mantra of your ecstasy of UTOPIAN learning. You - THE UTOPIANS, are the spirit of our department. With you no pain and without you no gain.

Language classes can speak volume of unheard words. Unlike other discipline, our disciplined students learn through their mind’s absence and the mere presence of your body in the class is just to MARK your attendance to park your pen on the paper to sketch your imagination into reality for MARKS again. It’s a cycle – because you are the learners of life – so you apply the life cycle to the learning cycle. The whole is your knowledge and your skill is the hole of it. Remember the hole is the whole here. Yes, thus they learn from the unseen. It is all but not quite.

You are nobody’s enemy, because your road is not taken by anybody. So, the difference is not in performance but in choice. You rejoice in your choice – no coming back - only showing the back for others to see and learn. Because, others cannot learn without seeing, as you can. You steal others with your steel hearts. ‘Steel’ is an image of glow and shine. But distance is immeasurable between the hardness of the steel and [of] your hearts.

You give up to grow up, and grow up - to lift others up. When you take part in race, I know you see others not to compete but to comfort [to check whether they are on track with you]. When this happens in the examination hall, those who cannot see the unseen [your good heart] punish you with the beautiful thought. There is an inconsistency in whatever you do. But those inconsistencies are consistent in their inconsistency. So, you play around with a centre to hold. The rope is unseen for SECURITY PURPOSES.

If you could understand it, you are a literat[ur]e student or else you are just a literate student.

This is a task for your life. And for third years …. This is our last task for you to remember all of us throughout or throw us out.

If you like it, click your heart. If not, tear this page. Let the dust bin be filled with the appreciation and love we have for you.

“Success is counted sweetest ……

To comprehend nectar

Requires a sorest need”

-Emily dickinson

Establishing the Department of English at TBAKC College for Women to enrich the literary talents of the youth folk of Kilakarai, had been a need and dream of the youth of the town.

The requirement was fulfilled with the good will and efforts of the Management, Principal and English faculty. Now it gives me immense pleasure and satisfaction to witness its upgradation and rapid development by transferring the “challenged youth” towards “excellence” At this point I am glad to congratulate the Head of the Department of English on bringing out the Newsletter……..”

‘Healthy and virtuous ambience leads people to healthy deeds’

My wonderful and golden story there for seventeen years as HOD, was a golden oppurtunity for me to serve for the well-being of student community. My association with the Management, Principal, Teaching and Non – teaching friends carved ‘golden moments’ in my journey of life which I always cherish the intellect we shared the team work and commitment. We extended the happiest days we experienced and above all the fun we enjoyed during meetings and in the department will be fresh and green in my memory forever.

‘One who contributes for the cause of education will be rewarded the highest in the hereafter’

No doubt, Our Founder B.S Abdur Rahman Sahib deserved this reward and words fail in my vocabulary to express my enormous respect and thanks to him. I do pray for his blissful eternity.

As Emerson advises the scholars of Cambridge University to be ‘Pole Stars’ to guide society, Dr. S Sumayaa, the Principal has been blessed to be a ‘Pole Star’ to brighten the path of TBAK. May the Almighty shower ‘this blessing’ to her for long years to come. Through this, I record my sincere appreciation for her dedicated commitment towards this institution.

As our Holy Prophet says, ‘One of the three things which will be remembered even after the person departs from the world is ‘social activity’ we render in any form. My department of English and I proudly presented a ‘gem’, ‘a jewel’ keeps scintillating more and more in years to come.

Hats off Zulaiha! Praise be to the Almighty. Let ‘you’ be an inspiration to the entire student family.

‘True Knowledge with virtues is power’

Heartily, I make an appeal to my students to enhance your ‘values’ ‘intellect’ and ‘skills’ for your prosperous, happy and peaceful life.

With Love and Prayer from

NAtuReA family went on a picnic in a park with their child, Lily. Lily loves butterflies and flowers very much. She felt very relaxed by enjoying nature’s beauty. The atmosphere of the park was stress- free and she played on the swing. Her mom and dad were sitting on the grass. It was so cool and green in colour and was so fertile. While swinging, she had a thought, how beautiful the Nature is! In its every single thing, there is beauty. She ran towards her mom and asked “Mom, how does this Nature help us?” She replied “Dear, Nature is everything, Nature is the creation of God and it’s a gift from God. Enjoy it without destroying them”. Lily replied, “Ok! Mom”. Then it became evening, they had their meal and returned home. As soon as they went home, Lily asked her mom to buy a flowering plant. She planted it in their home, so that nature could step in their home in the form of flowers…

CLoCK The sun rises. The sun’s rays came into my room and disturbed my sleep. My mother came and woke me up. I struggled to get up first. Then, finally, when I realised my mother stopped tapping, I opened my eyes to just see that clock’s hands were both in eight. I remembered the words of punctuality from my superior and the thought of those words even frightened me. So, I jumped out of my bed and ran into the toilet.

When I came out of the toilet and got dressed, I saw the time which was in nine hours and zero minutes. The hand of the seconds starts to go round the clock. For every second, my heart’s beat went up. I came running down to just bump into my mother and got scolded.

I skipped my breakfast and ran towards my two-wheeler but to see only that my keys were missing. I went red and ran into the street to hire an auto rickshaw. That driver was so annoying and talkative and we got stuck in a traffic jam. I was about to beat myself. At that moment, I got an idea. So, I took my phone to call my superior to inform him about my struggle. I searched his number in my phone. Unfortunately, I got a call from him. I was afraid and I attended the call to only hear the horn sounds of the vehicle. He asked me to finish his works and change his schedule and he told me that he was stuck in traffic. I was happy and replied him that I too was in the same traffic stuck. He did not reply anything and just said an okay. He cut the call.

I was relieved that I will not be punished today and when I reached my office, I walked with my superior into the office and just made a smile at him. We went to our works and continued for that day.

A NAughty CoCK This story is about a naughty cock. Once upon a time, a cock lived in a village. He was very clever. His feather looked so good. Around his mouth, it had red colour which looked so beautiful. He always crowed cock-a-doodle-doo at the time of Dawn. Some people told me that it crowed because it saw angels. Some others told me that it saw a Devil. The cock gave its hen eggs and it helped to produce its young ones- when we get one it was used as our food. Egg yolks are very important, which helps in the growth of chickens. This cock always ran to all the places and fought with other cocks. Beak is very important to the cock. It ate insects and his eyes looked so powerful.

This cock is used as pet in many houses in villages. And our naughty cock also lived in a house. He always did naughty things. He split the rice or other grains which were spread on the ground for drying. He bit the children when we least expect it. He feared only Dommu, a little boy. Dommu only fed him and played with him. Children who are in villages love to have dogs as their pets. But Dommu loved his cock. One day, Dommu’s father told him that they had to sell the cock because they had no use with him. But Dommu did not accept this and he told his father that the cock was his best friend. But his father did not accept.

So, he felt sad and then he remained sorrowful. Then, his father realized his bond with the cock and he told him that he was not selling it. Then, Dommu merrily said “Love you Pa-Pa”. Then the bonding between Dommu and the cock was doubled and they played with each other. They lived a happy life.

When I was doing my routine rounds on the campus a flash of irritation flamed on me.

I was a little bit annoyed on seeing the students sitting in chairs on the lawn in groups here and there. Something fishy was going on. Each group was silently observing different kinds of things like a live cock, live he goat, a cooking vessel on a stove loaded with dormant firewood and a clock hung on a tree.

One of the groups was seriously engaged in observing the Masjid without wink

“Are they mesmerized? It doesn't seem so!

“Are they presenting their supplication to the Almighty? But outside the Masjid - How?

Each student was having papers and pen ready to note down something. Why?

The goat, the cock and the vessel ready on an oven loaded with firewood? What could they mean?

“Are they going to prepare a recipe for Briyani?

Though I am not a glutton, the very thought concerning meal surprised me.

“And why that clock?”

“Oh! It could be for maintaining the time for cooking!

“And what about sitting in front of the Masjid?”

“Invoking prayer for sumptuous Banquet? Could be so!

Natural curiosity filled me. I wanted to investigate in case enquired into by the Principal. In a way I am answerable for strange incidents going on the campus.

While doubtfully looking around some of the staff from the Department I am familiar with, entered the arena with radiant countenance at the right time to drive home my doubts.

“Madam, what is this peculiar display of Cock, goat, clock and the like? An exhibition? ”

“Sir, we are conducting a competition for the students. The live specimens you see are the topics. They have to write poem, short story and articles as they like. This arrangement is to inspire them and to tap the spontaneous thoughts of students.”

“What a novel idea. So you are going to identify the creative writers. Ok, carry on”

The moment they said so, the trespassing of being sitting on the grass was wiped out of my mind screen. Instead I contemplated on the novel idea of the Department in motivating students.

If it was from the Department I am familiar with, there must be significance in selecting the particular specimens as topics. With this thought I resumed to my routine work. In the evening I was left alone in my abode and pondering to bring out the significance the unique Department ventured into. Racking my brain all night I could not arrive at apt solution.

The other day the Chief Security reported at the office.

“Sir, the Department in the ground floor is kept open till late night. Staff have no fixed time to leave. Sometimes they leave by early morning next day by 3 O' clock or so. This is just for your information please”

“Yes I know. The department is understaffed. So they take turn to complete the work themselves during night. They've got special permission from the Principal too. Ok no problem……..”

While talking to the Chief Security answer to the million dollar question racking my brain sparked out.

The members of staff of that unique Department work round the clock. There is no specific time to leave the campus, putting them in a dilemma whether to say „good night' or „good morning. Most of the time, they leave the campus by early morning the next day alerted by peacock alarm after wee hour or cock alarm at dawn. Occasionally leave during small hours at the sound of the ghost alarm, amplified by the canines and felines on the campus. However, reporting for duty punctually while the goat alarm goes around at the time the shepherds driving the herds to the pasture.

“Is that why the cock, the clock and the goat?”

This particular Department is both diurnal and nocturnal. Skipping meal was a common phenomenon for them.

“Does the empty vessel on the oven silently proclaim this?”

The Almighty has bestowed upon them the spirit of team work to accomplish any task amidst all difficulties. As presumed by me, it goes without saying that the qualities explained above were symbolically reflected in the theme for competition, though not able to provide ghost or peacock as live specimen.

Hats off to the unique Department.

We are happy and pleased to have Salamath Nooraniya, I BA English Literature [Batch 2016-19] as our student, who is the daughter of one of our alumnae Ms. Shakeela Banu, who studied from 1992-95 [Left]. The success milestone of this college is achieved when we get back admissions from the same root almost after 25 years. Shakeela has a lot of good reasons to admit her daughter where she studied, especially in the same department.

Shakeela was an active student of that period who enthusiastically participated in all the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. She was very much interested to learn Arabic in which she felt that she was weak. As a result of her hard work, she secured university rank in Arabic from the Madurai Kamaraj University.

Shakeela was happy to recollect her student life experience with the current teachers of the department when she came for the parents’ meeting. She feels that she has admitted her daughter in a right place where she will be given all good care and knowledge especially moral, religious and value based education. She also wants to put her daughter in the hostel where she had an armful of valuable experiences in her three years of stay.

The department of English initiated a project in the department of English called SYTO [Speak Your Thought Out] with the motif of making the students speak in English boldly. This is implemented for all the students (both UG and PG) in the department. 5 students from each class compulsorily should come to the department and speak for 3-5 minutes to the teachers available. A token will be provided for students to fill the mark by the staff to whom they speak and the same will be maintained by the students for reference. This is a routine task and they have to come in rotation throughout their study.

This is added as a main activity of UTOPIA and apart from the routine task, interested students may purchase more number of tokens and speak to us and gain mark. Finally, the students who have more tokens will be selected to be rewarded. Cost of per token is 20 paise.

We would like to involve the willing staff of other departments too to listen to our students’ speech if they are free whenever our students approach. We would like to send a circular to the departments to get their consent. And, they will go to the principal too randomly and we would request her to accommodate them depending upon the schedule. This will help our students to get rid of their fear and will be used to talk to anybody anywhere anytime without hesitation.

The amount collected by selling the tokens will be spent for the purpose of rewarding the students finally who involved more in SYTO.

• If the students want to finish their speaking they may even go during class hours with proper permission and if they fail to return in 5 minutes their token will be cancelled

• In that case, they have to go one by one and not together

Syto Initiated from 18.09.2015
