Curriculum vitae Jeroen Coumou was born on the 24th of March 1988 in Enkhuizen, the Netherlands. After high school graduation in 2006 from the Regionale Scholen Gemeenschap in Enkhuizen he moved to Amsterdam to study Medicine at the Academic Medical Center, University of Amsterdam. In the second year of medical school he was accepted in the Honours programme and became interested in fundamental research. In 2008 he started his first research internship at the Center for Experimental Molecular Medicine (CEMM) at the AMC under supervision of dr. Joppe Hovius and prof. dr. Tom van der Poll where he became intrigued with the pathogenesis of Lyme borreliosis, in specific the role of tick proteins during Borrelia burgdorferi transmission. In 2010 he worked as a research student at the Public Health Institute in Amsterdam (Streeklaboratorium GGD Amsterdam) under supervision of dr. Alje van Dam investigating the value of serological tests for Lyme borreliosis. At the same time he studied the effect of the tick salivary protein TSLPI on Borrelia burgdorferi transmission at the CEMM under supervision of dr. Joppe W. Hovius and dr. Tim J. Schuijt. Shortly thereafter, he left for the United States where he continued his research on TSLPI under supervision of prof. Erol Fikrig and dr. Sukanya Narasimhan at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, USA. After his visit to the US, he returned to Amsterdam in 2011 where he obtained his Master of Science with an honours degree and he received an AMC PhD Graduate Scholarship, allowing him to become a PhD-student at CEMM under supervision of dr. Joppe Hovius and prof. dr. Tom van der Poll. In 2012 he visited Yale University for a second time to study the role of tick gut proteins during Borrelia burgdorferi transmission. Afterwards, his experience with tick-animal models in the US allowed him to set up a tick colony at the AMC in Amsterdam for scientific purposes. His broad interest in clinical aspects and fundamental research in Lyme borreliosis resulted in a dissertation with several distinct themes. He is currently doing his clinical rotations and is expected to finish medical school in 2017. He aspires to become an internal medicine doctor. Jeroen lives in Amsterdam together with his girlfriend Janneke Linnekamp.

Dankwoord

Tenslotte kijk ik terug op veel lol samen, surfen in California – that’s my wave, dude! -, roadtrippen in New England, teken vangen in Sint Maartenszee en de retraite in Jávea. De toekomst blijft hopelijk even mooie momenten brengen!

Erol, thanks for the opportunities to work in your lab during my PhD. Your guidance and advice in my research projects at Yale as well as in Amsterdam have been valuable. The ongoing collaboration between Yale

The ongoing collaboration between Yale

and the AMC has helped us greatly to implement and improve our research models at the AMC. It was also special to spend time with you and your family at the Hamptons.

Then I would like to thank my copromotor Sukanya Narasimhan. You helped my greatly in my transformation from a medical student doing labwork into a PhD student performing my own experiments. Your work with the Yeast Surface Display has been of great importance for this thesis. And thanks to you I was able to get the most out of my work during my (always too short) time at Yale. Furthermore, your kindness and warm heart has made New Haven feel like home. Your optimism and perseverance when results turned out unexpected have been an inspiration. Jai-ho!

I would also like to thank to other members of CEMM. In particular Luigi, thanks for the fun, the Italian made espressos and the delicious dinners.

My time at the Fikrig lab at Yale University has become a success thanks to a number of people. Kathy, Jingyi, Martin, Julia, Yang and Nabil, it was wonderful working with all of you.

Lieve ouders, jullie hebben altijd achter me gestaan. Altijd benieuwd hoe het met me ging, wat me bezig hield en heel uniek dat jullie beiden mij hebben kunnen

opzoeken in New Haven.
