D ear Community of St. Augustine, What a great teaching and example we receive

from Jesus in the Gospel of St. Luke! (Lk 4, 1-13). He overcomes the devil’s temptations with the strength of the Holy Spirit, based on the Word of God. How do we overcome our temptations? On the first Letter of Peter, 5:8-9 we read, “Be sober and vigilant. Your opponent, the devil, is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, steadfast in faith…” This is the best advice to overcome our temptations, to resist steadfast on our faith. To be firm on our faith, the Lenten Season suggests prayer, fasting and almsgiving as important tools which help us in our spiritual life. My dear brothers and sisters, we can do it trusting the strength of the Holy Spirit and meditating on the Word of God. On this first Sunday of Lent, we are sending our catechumen Mithu Ghosh Deb, to the Rite of Election with our Bishop, John Noonan. Mithu is from India and is going through the process of conversion to Christianity. The Rite of Election is a sign of the unity of the Universal Church she is going to join. From this Sunday on, she will be called “elect” because she is firmly decided and committed to embrace the teachings of Christ and joining our Catholic Church. This Lent will be a time of intense spiritual preparation, deep reflection and prayer for her, since she will be receiving the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion on Easter. Let us pray for her that she may be strengthened in the faith and may overcome her temptations. Also, I wish to invite you again to join me for the Stations of the Cross in the Church, all Fridays of Lent, at 6:45pm in English and at 7:30pm in Spanish. And I hope you can join us to the Dinners of Fish Fried or Soup, which will be served alternatively all Fridays of Lent. May this Lent be a fruitful and holy time for all of us!

LONG-SLEEVE RELIEF DRIVE 2019 From March 6th through April 18th. This Lent please join us and make a difference in the lives of our farmworker brothers and sisters in Christ. Our brothers and sisters in the fields are in need of shirts to wear to protect them from the sun and toxic elements as they gather the food we put on our tables.

How to Participate Please donate CLEAN, NEW or GENTLY USED men’s and

women’s cotton long-sleeve shirts to be worn in the fields.

Bring them to the church and place them in the box labeled Long-Sleeve Relief located in the narthex or bring them to the parish office during business hours.

THE BIBLE TIMELINE: Bible Class for Adults The next class will be Wednesday, March 20th at 7:45pm, Room #3 in the Religious Education Building. Topic: Royal Kingdom—Part 2.

The families in our Faith Formation program are partnering with the Sharing Center by making "Birthday boxes". Each class decorates a shoe box and then fills it with everything needed for a child's birthday party. When families come to the Sharing Center’s pantry and mention that their child is having a birthday they are given one of these boxes. The families are very thankful and appreciative for the box. This will be an on-going project so if you would like to donate cake mix, icing, candles, plates, napkins, etc. you can drop off items at the office.

RCIA: Rite of Sending / Election (March 10th, 2019, 1st Sunday of Lent) This Sunday, we celebrate the Rite of Sending, formally asking the Church of Saint Augustine to accept our catechumen, Mithu Ghosh Deb, as member of the Elect – chosen by God for baptism – and to pray for our her continued growth in the Spirit. We will then journey to the Basilica Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe to celebrate the Rite of Election with our Bishop, John Noonan.

FUN FACTS: Since the beginning of St.

Augustine Parish, traditions have been established and faithfully

maintained. The annual St. Augustine Day celebration was begun as soon as there was a

parish building in 1969. This event is held every year with various

activities to enrich the social and spiritual life of the parish. The real history of St. Augustine’s is that of people called together in the love

of God. St. Augustine Parish Community started with a handful

of dedicated, visionary families who with the leadership of the Augustinians and the diocese of Orlando have become a strong

community dedicated to God, to the community and to each other.

Pray together. Even if it's just an Our Father or Hail Mary, it unites the family.

Let each family member mention one person or problem that they would like to pray for in a special way at dinnertime.

Take the kids grocery shopping for the poor. Let them help you bring the food to the parish on March 30-31, 2019 or the local food bank.

Let children light a candle at church for people throughout the world who are sick or hungry.

Sample Lenten food favorites, such as hot cross buns or pretzels. If you're really adventurous, check the Internet for recipes and make your own!
