Victoria Village P.S., 88 Sweeney Dr., North York, M4A 1T7, 416-397-2930, Principal: L. Miklasevics, Superintendent: Curtis Ennis, Trustee: Ken Lister March’s Principal’s Message: Liga Miklasevics March has been a busy month. We focused on honesty, helping children to transfer their knowledge to other areas of the curriculum and situations outside their classroom walls and walking to school to save our planet. Do healthy lunches improve student test scores? Do you know that an average 80 year old is healthier than our children? Why? Because they did not have fast food choices and they ate healthier. At Victoria Village, beginning in Kindergarten, with the support of our families, we encourage our students to make healthy food choices. I was fascinated and delighted to read a recent study, which looked into the relationship between the nutritional quality of children’s lunches and academic performance. The study found that, “healthier meals could raise student achievement by about 4 percentile points on average.” (2017. Michael L Anderson et al). I encourage you, whenever possible, to choose fresh fruits and vegetables and leftovers from dinner for your child’s lunches. We want our students to be the best that they can be! Do you recall (~30 years ago) when every little boy and girl wanted to be like the “Karate Kid”? I told my children that to be like Karate Kid they needed to eat vegetables. All the children on the street became big vegetable eaters. Eventually, it simply turned into a habit of choice. Check it out this month’s news! The ECO Club has started the Victoria Village “Walking School Bus”! It will take place every Wednesday to and from school. It was lots of fun and I am so proud of the students and teachers for making this happen! We want our students to have healthy bodies and minds! Please help your child to make healthy choices!

Energy! The Grade One’s in Ms. Thomas’s class have been learning about Energy. Students have been exploring & identifying different ways in which energy is used every day.  We are learning that energy is something that is needed to make things happen. Also, the sun is the most important source of energy because it gives us heat, light and makes everything grow. Our class integrated Language, Arts & Science and each student demonstrated their understanding by creatively making a paper plate sun.  Then they added a written component to it.  Our magnificent paper plate suns light up the hallways!

Printmaking in Kindergarten Mrs. Pepaj’s Kindergarten students did some printmaking.  Check it out!

Native Art The children in Mrs. Thomas’ Gr. 1 class are learning about First Nations and Native traditions.  They learned that the Native People believe each animal is special and unique and can teach humans many things.  Native traditions teach us to respect animals and how to live in harmony with nature.  Natives honour animals in their stories, songs and dances.  Each animal is honoured for its gifts and special qualities.

Kindergarten Potlatch The students in Mrs. Evert’s Kindergarten class held a Potlatch in the library to dedicate their Totem Pole.  Their Totem Pole represents daily Kindergarten life in Room 101 and was inspired by the art of Herve Tullett. After reconstructing their totem, the children ate bannock which they made.  Bannock is a fried bread that Native Canadians make to eat at feasts or on the trail. We dedicated our totem to the Thunderbird who flaps his wings to make thunder which brings the rain which waters the fields and allows the grain for the flour for the bannock for us to eat to grow.

Walking School Bus On March 22, 2017, the Eco Club at Victoria Village P.S. initiated a new program called Walk to School Wednesdays. With the help of a few teachers and the enthusiasm of our Grade 4 and 5 students, we began walking to and from school on Wednesdays. If you are a Grade 4 or 5 student and would like to join us, please meet at the Rental Office at 1440 Victoria Park Avenue on Wednesday morning at 8:15 a.m.. To walk home, we meet at the portable at the school at 3:05 p.m. and arrive at the buildings at about 3:15 p.m. Please join us.

Be a Future Ace We are a Future Ace School, which means that we reinforce good character traits and respectful behaviours. Each month we focus on being the best we can be. We look for students who are acting like Future Aces by cooperating and working together, solving problems using words and accepting help when needed. Parents are warmly welcomed to our monthly Future Ace Assemblies.  March Future Aces- This month we focussed

on Honesty!  We encouraged the children to tell the truth regardless of the situation or consequences.  We asked that they not exaggerate the facts and admit when they are wrong. We helped them to understand that lies always make the problem bigger and make people not trust us in the future.
