Not that U W . matter of niucli importance to »e the up country meinbcis of the first circuit, but really matters nie so mix¬ ed up, that from mere curiosity we are led to the enquiry, upon what issues will the coming election be de¬ cided ? All party linos appear to be wiped out, the terms Republican or Democrat appear to have no signifi¬ cance whatever, and as it appears to us the simple preference as be ween Cunningham and Wagancr, will alone decide the casting of the coming vote, what do you mean gentlemen ? Will the P cws and Courier please rise to explain. Tenipnraiicn. Just at this particular junction of affairs, we feel thht a few words in re¬ lation to this subject will not be out of place. As generally accepted it re¬ lates to the abstaining from the use of intoxicating liquors, or at least is con- Rtrued to mean that by the advocates of total abstinence, and here we would say, that nothing wc now write is in¬ tended to reflect upon or oppose a "temperance Organization" of any kind whatever, they 'are all intended for good, and as a general thing work to that end, and may always count upon our cordial and hearty support, when, limited to the legitimate ends of a "temperance society" as opposed to the injurious use of liquors. Wc agree that they have a sturdy but noble light before them, a high and honorable mission, so long as it is con¬ fined to the proper and lawful efforts - flgsittst !*fidiVg^aTe^oT^?""TTnt the world in general, and we agree fully ¦with it, docs not limit the meaning of the word temperance simply to the nbslennnce from alcoholic drink, but there are other interpretations incul¬ cating as high, if not higher, lessons of morality that it impresses upon us. We should bo "temperate" in judging of the actions and motives of our friends and fellow men, temperate in deciding as to whether they arc actu¬ ally doing wrong or not, temperate in deciding what course should be pur¬ sued if they arc acting contrary to our ideas of right or wrong, temperate in the public expression of oik opin¬ ion of them. Temperance does not g.o out among us with a rule in her hand, prepared to utterly condemn over)' one who t?oes not come up to her arbitrary and precise requirements. True, temperance is reasonable, pru¬ dent, just, lenient, non-obtrusive and lion-offensive. Whenever if assumes the aggressive [ot herwise than against the use of liquors) it at once becomes ''intemperance." In our daily inter¬ course, "temperance" tenches us to be polite and respectful, to cautiously avoid any indiscreet or hasty,or intem¬ perate expression, or in fact the use of any "intemperate" language, not only "temperance" teaches that, butall that go to make up "temperance" impresses it forcibly upon us, politeness, self- respect,, a kind heart, good nature, good broedingi all join to give to the true gentleman, a character for real "temperance" that the obtrusive, en¬ thusiastic, one idea'd member of the "temperance society" can never ob¬ tain. He cannot no intemperate in several respect's, to iu force temperance in one. And in the unavailing effort to do so, must only bring discredit upon the cause lie would advance, and which is so dear to many an anxious heart. The temperance cause has wiihin the past few years;sprcad with Raniazing'rajiiclity. Upon its own merit it must continue its success, but mein- hers who aro "intemperate" in the broad "[sense of tho word, must neces¬ sarily retard its course. "Be yc tem¬ perate in nil things," is a command that is binding upon us all, and the man who use intemperate language and with intemperate basic, judges and condemns his fellow man, is fully as guilty of real Intemperance as the one who puts the wine cup to his lips.
